Tommy Vitos, left, shakes hands with druggist William Rast, right, admitting defeat after betting that he and fellow adventurer Graham Ring could survive for 30 days in the Olympic Mountain region dressed only in shorts and tennis shoes and armed with knives, fishing line and an automatic lighter. The would be Tarzans existed for eight days on berries and fish before returning to civilization cold and hungry. The original wager was $200 against 100 days of moving bricks. Lt. Herman G. Wallace of the Tacoma Police Department photographed, booked and fingerprinted "Jocko," a mischievous Capuchin monkey, while "Jocko" was perched on his owner's, David Bales, shoulder on November 1, 1937. "Jocko" was charged with one count of "monkey business" and a second count of "monkey shines." The six-year-old defendant had a past record of "crimes" including stealing candy, ogling pretty girls and taking baths in full view of startled citizens. He was generally docile but lacked a sense of humor, hating to be laughed at or laughed with. Lt. Wallace was in charge of the Bureau of Records. (T.Times, 11/1/37, p.2).

The 4-H Club ice cream stand was a popular stop on Friday August 21, 1936 at the 9th annual Washington Cooperative Association picnic held in Sumner. 2000-3000 farmers and grange members attended the all-day affair. Three county commissioners (l to r) A.A. Rankin, John Schlarb, and Harvey Scofield were all two-fisted cone eaters. They were served by (l to r) Marion McChesney, Elsa Wahlquist, and her sister Edna.

The Washington National Guard's annual encampment took place in the last 2 weeks of June, 1936. Given a different honorary name each year, the 1936 camp was named "Camp Wesley Lloyd" after the late Congressman. The first week was plagued with the heaviest rain since 1931.

Mattson kidnapping case. Warehouses and shoreline along Commencement Bay. Photograph ordered by the Seattle Star. On December 27, 1936, at around 9 p.m., ten year old Charles Mattson was abducted from his parents' home by an armed intruder. The man left a typed ransom note demanding $28,000. He then, it is believed, carried the 70 pound boy down a steep cliff behind the Mattson home, across the railroad tracks and to a waiting car on Ruston Way. The following day, the area was crawling with press attempting to fill their front pages. It was hypothesized the the abductor could have hidden the boy in one of the warehouses along the waterfront. On September 22, 1937, Isabel Smitley, with her husband Tacoma Mayor George Smitley decorated the winning race horse "Premier Jim" and congratulated his jockey in the winner's circle at the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup. The horse had just won the afternoon's feature event, the one-mile "Mayor Smitley" race for previous non-winning 3 year olds. They were posed on the grandstand grass during Tacoma Day at the Fair. Seated next to a portrait of President Lincoln, and assisted by a nurse, Johnny Wray, a 92-year-old Civil War veteran, chatted with an unidentified man about his early life. When this photograph was taken in February of 1936, Mr. Wray was living at the Washington Soldiers' Home in Orting. He was a first cousin to Stephen A. Douglas, and at the age of 14 he was present for one of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. He joined the army when 17, but only served four months "traipsing through the wood," and never fired a shot. Mr. Wray died October 18, 1937 at the age of 94. (T. Times 2/12/1936, pg. 1; T. Fred Harris, the cook at the Pierce County jail, was photographed in September of 1925, hard at work in the kitchen where he prepared two meals a day for more than 90 prisoners and guards. His meals were so good that those in the know declared the County jail to be "great for food." The inmates were appreciative too, gifting Mr. Harris $5.00 in silver the previous Christmas, a gesture that deeply touched him. Fred Harris was also thrifty, pleasing the commissioners by running the kitchen on $570 a month, about eleven cents per meal per man. (TNT 9/18/1925, pg. 6) (WSHS- negative A856-0)
