An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

College of Puget Sound's orchestra was first called the Puget Sound Symphony, then later changed their name to the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. Raymond Vaught was the conductor, Clyde Keutzer was the head of the music department at CPS. Aside from the orchestra CPS music department had the Adelphian Choir and the Women's Chorus. The Workshop Band, organized and directed by Leroy Ostransky, is one of the newest additions to College of Puget Sound's extracurricular organizations. Baby Kathleen Ann McKenty celebrated both St. Patrick's Day and her first birthday in March 1947. Her parents brought her over to a stone found behind the College of Puget Sound women's dormitory in order to teach her about the "Blarney Stone" of Blarney Castle, located near Cork, Ireland. Her parents hoped to bring Kathleen to the real Blarney Stone someday - which is supposed to confer the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney) to all who kiss it. Kathleen is the granddaughter of Harry Sprinker, who would hold the office of Pierce County Commissioner for 20 years. She did not get to visit Ireland with her parents as they both died when she was young. Kathleen would go on to marry John Hartman and presently resides in Snohomish. Nearly 60 years after this photograph was taken, the Hartmans are planning their first trip to Ireland in 2007. (T. Times, 3/17/47, p. 1; additional information provided by a reader).

College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound purchased U. S. Army surplus buildings in 1947. These buildings would be used to provide more classrooms, they were assembled, renovated and christened as "South Hall". On a sunny day in May, 1947, Louise Kepper, a senior at the College of Puget Sound, stops to admire the "Kissing Posts" taken from the campus of Pacific Lutheran University by students of the College of Puget Sound. Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. In October of 1947, College of Puget Sound students, alumni and faculty participated in four days of festivities including two performances of an oldtime minstrel show, "Gentlemen, Be Seated," in blackface at Jones Hall. The show was directed by John O'Connor, a professor at CPS. The highlight of the show was a rendition of "Lo, Hear the Gentle Lark." Music for the show was played by the "Cottonpickers," a 35- piece orchestra under the direction of O'Connor (T. Times, 10/21/47, p. 5).

College of Puget Sound 1947 homecoming football game was being played against the Willamette Bearcats. CPS football coach, Frank Patricks, was hopeful that their losing streak would end with the homecoming game. The Loggers had played against, San Jose and Whitman, and had lost those games. Coach Patricks stated that although they had not won a game yet, they had improved from last season.

Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was designed by architects, Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and Mock & Morrison. The ground breaking ceremony was held in July 1946. The cornerstone was laid by Dr. Edward H. Todd, CPS's previous president, the building was named in his honor for his many years of service to the institution.
