Three two-man crews of painters work from platforms suspended on the south wall of the Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, in August of 1947. The temple, dedicated on February 22, 1916, was designed by E. Frere Champney. The staircase next to the building, that connects Broadway with Commerce St., is known as the Spanish steps, and were intended to serve as a fire escape for the building. The Elks Temple has fallen into disrepair, and its future is in question. TPL-8446

On Sept. 15, 1946, at the awards ceremony of the First Annual Elks' Salmon Derby, Jerry Geeham, the master of ceremonies, in a white t-shirt, and an unidentified Elks member battled with an octopus. A memorial service was held for Walter Sutter at the Elks Club on October 3, 1947. Although one of Walt's last requests was that no flowers be sent, many arrangements were sent in his honor. Money that would have been spent on flowers was asked to be donated to the Tacoma Boy's Club. The Elks Club at 565 Broadway was a full service club with its own barbershop. In this photograph from 1948, Exalted Ruler Cecil Walrath gets a haircut and shave with both giant scissors and a giant straight edge razor. The man holding the scissors is Swan Johnson; the one with a razor may be Harold R. Johnson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Elks. Mr. Walrath doesn't seem too worried as he continues to read his Esquire magazine.

Gloria Ellexson, of Sumner, performed her award winning majorette routine for the Tacoma Elks Lodge on Wednesday June 30, 1948. A student at the College of Puget Sound, she had recently won the title of state champion in the majorette competition held in Aberdeen at the Elks' State Convention. She was the majorette for the Tacoma Elks Band, which , under the leadership of J. R. Gress, was also awarded state champion that year. (T. Times, 6/28/48, p. 1).

The Elks Club had more than 100 members working on the upcoming Christmas benefit. The goal of the Stocking Fillers project of the Tacoma Elks Club in 1948 was to insure that every child in Tacoma would be remembered on Christmas day. To help reach their goal, the Elks worked closely with Tacoma's 1,900 Girl Scouts. The scouts made sure that each of the 120 dolls that were given as gifts came with a full wardrobe of handmade clothes. More than 150 boys were sworn in as School Patrol Officers, taking their oaths and joining the 600 other student officers in Tacoma. The Tacoma School District initiated the student safety program 20 years ago and since that time there have been about 10,000 patrol officers. Elks Club members with 25 years of service or longer were being honored by the club on January 26, 1949. Cecil Walrath, Elks Exalted Ruler, stated the club would be honoring over 400 men. "Old Timers" would march to the lodge room and after a short business section, a two hour entertainment program would begin. John H. "Big John" Anderson (right) was the newly selected Exalted Ruler of the Tacoma Elks Lodge for 1949-1950. He is pictured above accepting the gravel from his predecessor, Cecil Walrath, on April 5, 1949. Mr. Anderson, a well known Tacoma building contractor, was installed in impressive ceremonies headed by Edwin J. Anderson, past president for the State Elks Association. John Anderson had a bright career ahead of him: he was elected mayor of Tacoma twice and served as school board president three times. An avid sportsman and noted civic leader, Mr. Anderson passed away in November of 1974. (TNT 4/5/49, p. 20-article; TNT 4-7-49, C-7).
