Portrait of Judge Arthur W. Verharen. Arthur W. Verharen was named to the Pierce County Superior Court by Governor Dixy Lee Ray in early December, 1977. At age 37, he would be the youngest Pierce County Superior Court judge when he was sworn in on January 3, 1978. Judge Verharen had been a District Court judge prior to his appointment. Portrait of Judge Hardyn B. Soule. Hardyn Soule was a 26-year veteran Pierce County Superior Court judge who resided with wife Betty at 3616 North Union Ave. He was appointed by Gov. The men are now wearing ruffled shirts and wide lapeled jackets while the woman, still with the rose in her hair, has on a long sleeved gown with deep, rounded neckline. Mr. Ketcheson and Ms. Hipp had been hired for a federally funded sorting and indexing project of old photographs, glass plates and negatives. Most of these had been taken by two well-known local photographers: Marvin D. Boland and Chapin Bowen. Exterior view in early 1978 of the American Smelting & Refining Company (ASARCO) with focus on large diameter fiberglas reinforced pipe manufactured by Chemical Pipe & Tank (owned by Barthel Co.) and the Barthel Co. and installed by the National Blower & Sheet Metal Co., fabricators of structural steel and miscellaneous iron. Access to the Northwest Room is through a hallway from the business, science and technology area of the Main Library's first floor. The Carnegie Annex was closed to the public in 1952 when the new Main Library was completed. Only the Fireside Room and auditorium have been used until the Northwest Room was opened. ca. 1978. ASARCO plant. In the center of this early 1978 photograph of the American Smelting & Refining Co. plant located in Ruston is the Herreschoff Roaster baghouse that was brand new that year. It had been installed as part of ASARCO's modernization and served to curb industrial air pollution. The baghouse vented the roaster plant to the left. The arsenic plant is situated on the right. Studio portrait of Delores Winston and Steven Pitts. Ms. Winston, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon T. Winston, resided in Lake City and was the territory sales manager for Hunt-Wesson Foods. She was a graduate of Tacoma Community College and was Miss TCC for 1969-70. Delores K. Winston and Steven Edward Pitts would be married at St. John Baptist Church in 1978. Cranes and earthmovers are busy a few days before Christmas of 1977 in the middle of this unidentified street believed to be 88th St. West in Parkland. It appears as though the men and equipment shown above are in the process of installing new sewer or water pipes. Excavation has begun and machinery poised to move the mounds of dirt. This is possibly part of the massive Lakewood-Parkland sewer system project that saw opponents go to court seeking court injunctions blocking the $72,000,000 construction job. November 1st was the start date for the Montana firm of Felton Construction; their contract was for $2.4 million and the firm was given nearly a year to complete the work. Pool table. This pool table was one of three different types built and assembled by Educators Manufacturing Co., 3401 Lincoln Ave. Educators Manufacturing was primarily known for its school furniture line but apparently had branched out to some types of wood-based recreational items. One of their designs was a "knocked-down" pool table which came with fortified aprons to make the tables stronger. The 700-lb. table took about an hour to set up. Educator Manufacturing Co. was one of three major manufacturers of billiard tables in Tacoma. With production and sales of about 6000, it was the largest of the three. Educators had contracts with Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Simpson-Sears of Canada. The other two firms, George Michaels' Thea Industries and Western Billiards Manufacturing Co., produced and sold about 1000 tables a year. Color photograph ordered by Educators Manufacturing Co. The musical duo of John Standefer and Tim West posed with their guitars for a studio portrait on September 23, 1977. Mr. Standefer (standing) had been a professional guitarist since the age of 16. He learned the Chet Atkins style by ear and studied in a music conservatory. According to his website, www.johnstandefer.com, he would go on to win the 2002 National Fingerstyle Guitar Contest and was the open division winner of the 2004 International Home of the Legends Competition. Princesses in native dress representing various Scandinavian countries and a young "Miss USA" posed for a studio portrait in mid-September of 1977. Seated are: (L-R) Miss Finland Paivi Johanna Jarvio, Miss USA Julie Septon and Miss Iceland Karen Reep. Standing are : (L-R) Miss Denmark Cindy Stahl, Miss Norway Kris Zetterburg and Miss Sweden Kirstin Mueller. They would be participating in the annual Scandinavian Days festival sponsored by the Leif Erickson Committee. Each fall exhibits and food associated with Norway, Finland, Denmark and Sweden would be on display for five days in downtown Tacoma. The band performed 1976-1979, according to the website Pacific Northwest Bands. Mark Harris became the drummer in "Rock n Roll Magic," another Tacoma group.
