Celebration of the 1939 National Boy Scout Week. Sea Scout Willard Hoveland of Ship 110 is illustrating to Cub Scout Kenny Johnston of Cub Pack 6 how rope knots are tied. Knot tying instruction was one of the planned activities for the weekend celebration of Scout Week. Scouting was founded in 1907 in Britain by Robert Baden-Powell. Tacoma is treated to a parade on May 6, 1938 when Knights Templar from all over the state gathered here for the 51st Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington. Unit of marching men in traditional dress uniforms with swords and plumed hats parade up 13th Street and turn north on Broadway.

Shriners gather in Tacoma to board the special train to the Golden Jubilee 1938 Imperial Council Session to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9. A farm wagon carries eight men. Several other men wait for an opportunity to ride in the wagon which displays a sign "New Deal." Parades, events, stunts and hijinks will be an important part of the convention.

On December 3rd, 1938, The Golden Jubilee was brought to a close with a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, where 600 Shriners from 12 temples gathered to commemorate the founding of Tacoma's Afifi Temple. Honored were the "Old Timers," those who were members before 1900 and helped to grow the membership from 8 to the current 2,000. Seven members of the Spinsters Club met on April 23, 1940, to finalize plans for the second annual Dixie Ball to be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel on Saturday, May 11, 1940. The Old South of "Dixie Land" was the ball's theme. Backdrops would include river steamers and cotton fields. The black servant dolls shown above would be used to hold table reservation cards. Co-Ed Daffodil Dance at Hotel Winthrop on March 22, 1941. The Co-Ed Club annually hosted the opening ball of the Daffodil Festival, held immediately following the coronation. On June 17, 1942, a Junior League member, believed to be Helen Hurley, helped to register blood donor Mrs. Gene Courtney (left). The club women were serving as receptionists at Tacoma General Hospital and St. Josephs Hospital as a blood drive took place to build up the plasma stores for US Armed Forces. Women from Tacoma's Junior League served as receptionists at Tacoma General and St. Joseph's Hospitals during a few weeks beginning at the end of June 1942. They were assisting in the volunteer blood drive for the US Armed Forces. When volunteers went to the hospitals to donate, the Junior League ladies would greet, assist and direct them to the doctors.
