In March of 1937, the Stadium High School orchestra was tuning up and practicing for the upcoming premier of the original opera "Masquerade," written by their instructor Clayton Johnson, shown here conducting. Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of Puget Sound and after further studies, returned to Tacoma to take the post of Director of Music at Stadium High School. He held that position for 30 years, counting among his students Janis Paige, star of stage and screen, and Metropolitan Opera performers Roald Reitan and Hugh Thompson. "Masquerade" was one of two operas Mr. Johnson wrote during his tenure at Stadium. He died in June of 1982 at the age of 83. (T. Times, 04-01-1937, p.1; TNT 06-21-1982, pg. C-12)

In March of 1926, Stadium High School initiated its own branch of the national "Longfellows" Club. Members had to measure in at over six feet in height to join. The new club attracted a group of approximately 50 young men who posed in front of Stadium High School at 111 North "E" Street. (WSHS; A-1488 same photo without lettering)

ca. 1926. General view of Jason Lee Intermediate School, circa 1926. Jason Lee was built in 1924 from a design by architect Roland Borhek. The school was the first and largest of six new "intermediate" schools built after the 1923 bond issue. Staff members of the Clover Park High School newspaper, the Clover Leaves, are pictured printing the paper on a mimeograph machine. Left to right are: Production Manager Clinton Richardson, Sports Editor LeRoy Beckwith and Advertising assistant Ardys Pratt. Clinton Richardson wears an apron to protect his clothing from spilled ink. Upholding its tradition, the school paper took first class honors in the National Scholastic Press Association competition. Thirteen Lincoln High School girls, wearing bathing suits and high heels, clustered around an unidentified male student in February of 1941. The girls, who were participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest at the school, were also hoping to be cast in the school Music Department production of "Of Men and Models". The student written and scored musical comedy, to be directed by student LeRoy "Lee" Hale, told the story of a football hero who inherited a 5th Avenue dress shop. Standing in the back are: (l to r) Betty Snyder, Florence Anderson, Carol Lind, Lois Dahl, Matilda Drennen, Mary Sandford, Doris Davey and Mary Anne Wilkins. The other five girls are: (l to r) Janet Wolters, Martha Farrell, Garnet Thompson, Lawauna Dickes and Harriet Sommervell. Contestants had to be at least 5'4" tall. From the writing on the blackboard, this night school class appears to be hard at work studying their prefixes. In October of 1939 over 1,700 adults took part in over 60 classes offered at Lincoln High School on Monday and Thursday nights. One of the purposes of the night school program was to help adult students catch up on basic educational tools, such as reading, writing and basic arithmetic. The most popular courses were Naturalization and Americanization, shop and interior design. (T. Times 10/12/1939, pg. 13)

ca. 1935. Boy from Jason Lee Orchestra playing bassoon in front of school. The boy is probably Bruce Allen, a noted juvenile bassoonist, who would have been around 9 years old at the time of this picture. The bassoon is one of the most difficult wood instruments and is usually not attempted by such young players. By 1938, Bruce had been studying for over 2 years and played in the Tacoma Times Jr. Concert Band (formerly known as the Mickey Mouse Band.) He was placed first chair by the conductor of the Junior Orchestra at the 1938 high school music festival in St. Louis. (T. Times 1/8/1937, pg. 7; T. Times 5/20/1938)

Model of Lincoln Bowl Stadium and Lincoln Park improvement project. The model was made by Fred Zinn, WPA commercial artist and draftsman, and shows the site of the proposed new Lincoln Bowl. The arena would be located in the gulch between Lincoln High School and Lincoln Park. The school would lose a small strip of land at the rear of the school and the park would lose a small wooded area at the east side of the park. The Bowl would seat 10,000 on concrete steps and cost about $250,000. Proponents of the Bowl were trying to get it on the November 8th ballot, proposing that the district levy be increased by 1 mill. to raise the $50,000 needed to match $200,000 in federal grant funds.
