Residents and staff of the Bellevue Sanatorium posed for a group portrait on August 26, 1971. They would be attending a picnic at Wapato Park that day. One woman in the photograph's center is carrying an accordion, presumably to provide entertainment for the patients at the park. Bellevue Sanatorium was located at 515 South 64th St. and had been in operation since 1932. Photograph ordered by Bellevue Sanatorium.
Keel laying ceremonies. This is the view overlooking the keel of the new steel sampan being built for Angel Fishing Co., Ltd., by Martinolich Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship, later christened the "Anela," was built on a specially designed shallow-draft square keel to protect the rudder and single screw from potential damage of sharp coral reefs. The keel was placed in the cradle in which the ship will be built. It ran in the middle of the ship, from her bow to stern, and formed the spine of the ship. The keel was laid on June 19, 1971 and launching scheduled for November 25th. Upon completion, the ship would be delivered to her owners for fishing out of Honolulu. However, work on the sampan progressed so rapidly that the launching was actually accomplished ahead of time on October 18, 1971, with members of the Shinsato family present. 1971 Daffodil Parade. Marching proudly down Pacific Avenue in rows of three was a contingent from the Afifi Temple. The Shriners wore their color dress uniforms of red and green, including the familiar fez. The springtime sun was out in full force on Saturday, April 3rd, accompanied by soft blue skies. This was a contrast to the Junior Daffodil Parade the week before when brisk winds and cold temperatures chilled participants and parade watchers.

1971 Daffodil Parade. Performing intricate maneuvers during the April 3, 1971, Daffodil Festival Parade is this group of sharply dressed young women in red. In addition to the bright red jackets and skirts, they are wearing white berets and gloves. There were a total of 19 drill teams in attendance to delight the waiting throngs.

1971 Daffodil Parade. Winner of the Princess trophy for best float under 30 feet was the entry from Morton. Entitled the "Morton Loggers Jubilee," the float featured the Jubilee queen and attendants seated before large chunks of wood. The Morton Loggers Jubilee would be held on August 14-15 in 1971. 1971 Daffodil Parade. "Save Meeker Mansion" was the plaintive plea on this float entered on the April 3, 1971, Daffodil Parade. The float, entitled "On the Trail," depicted a pioneer, probably Ezra Meeker, and his daffodil-covered wagon. The Meeker Mansion was attempting to avoid the wrecking ball and funds were being sought for its rehabilitation.

1971 Daffodil Parade. "Mr. Northwind" and his icy breath drew rounds of applause from the crowds lined up along Pacific Avenue to view the 1971 Daffodil Parade. The float entered by the Fife-Milton community won the coveted "Sweepstakes" award. The float's "snow" was composed of some 50,000 white Mt. Hood daffodils. Perched on glossamer flakes in giant white hoop skirts were princess Karen Barnes and her attendants Lynne Brinkman and Peggy Gaschke. Volunteer help from both Fife and Milton designed and built the award-winning float, including the 13-foot high papier-mache "Mr. Northwind." (TNT 4-3-71, p.1; TNT 4-4-71, B-1)

1971 Daffodil Parade. Horses and horse-drawn wagons were always a favorite entry in the annual Daffodil Festival Parades. This team of four brown and white horses pull a wagon entitled "Century Cafe Buckly" with two white-hatted men as drivers. There were 11 mounted units in the 1971 parade.

1971 Daffodil Parade. Native Americans on horseback composed one of the 11 mounted units participating in the 1971 Daffodil Festival Parade. Led by an unidentified man in feathered headdress, the riders may have represented more than one tribe.

Studio portrait of Jim Rico. Bearing an astonishing resemblance to comedian Stan Laurel is Sumner resident Jim Rico. He posed for a studio portrait on April 2, 1971, with a black derby and bow tie reminiscent of that worn by Laurel. Mr. Rico resided at 20105 Church Lake Dr. in Sumner. Keel laying ceremonies. In lieu of smashing a bottle of champagne, Japanese sake is gently poured over the keel of a new steel sampan being built at Martinolich Shipbuilding facilities on Alexander Ave. The family of Jack Shinsato, Honolulu owners, do the honors on June 19, 1971. Members of Sweet Adelines caught in song as they "ride" in a antique car cutout during the "Music Americana" program held in the Mount Tahoma High School auditorium in early November of 1971. This may have been the featured women's group, the "Embers," who had placed second in international competition the year before. September, 1971, view of the 2700 block of South Tacoma Way. At the corner is the Oxygen Sales & Service Co., distributor of Union Carbide welding products and Linde gases. Propane was also for sale. Next door to Oxygen Sales & Service was the Steven Motor Co., a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership. According to their full page ad in the 1971 City Directory, Steven Motor Co. had 50 continuous years in the automobile business in Tacoma. They had been at the South Tacoma Way location since 1959; prior to that, they had been based in downtown Tacoma on Broadway for many years. Everett T. Earth Day celebrations. On April 22, 1971, Mayor Gordon N. Johnston took his turn in shoveling dirt onto a newly planted tree at the 38th St. interchange on the freeway. Symbolic "Earth Day" trees were planted at eight sites around the state including Tacoma; the trees were donated by the State Highway Department to call attention to roadside beautification projects. These "Earth Day" trees were part of the 24,030 trees that were scheduled to be planted during the bienium ending June 30th. Photograph ordered by Department of Highways, District 3. Outgoing University-Union Club president James A. Milgard examines the club's ledger with incoming president Thomas L. Fishburne (r) on July 21, 1971. Mr. Fishburne was an attorney with the firm of Thomas, Honeywell, Malanca, Peterson, O'Hern & Johnson. Mr. Milgard was associated with Milgard Mfg. which would later become the largest producer of residential windows in the western United States. Johnson-Wolf wedding. University of Wisconsin graduate students Cyntheia Yvonne Johnson and Richard Allen Wolf were married at St. Leo's Catholic Church on August 21, 1971. Pictured above is the bride, in her delicate organza gown trimmed with jeweled alecon lace including a cathedral length mantilla. With her is believed to be her mother, Mrs. Douglas Cato. The new Mrs. Wolf is also the daughter of Collie Johnson of Vietnam. She had graduated from Aquinas Academy and Marquette University. Star Iron & Steel, a major manufacturer of cranes, hoists and special machinery, had received in January of 1971 an exclusive license to manufacturer and sell Karricon self-propelled straddle carriers in the United States. They would be manufacturing two models with a capacity of 30 tons.

Star Iron & Steel had received the exclusive licensing agreement to manufacture and sell Karricon straddle carriers in the United States. This contract would have added to the large increase in sales experienced by Star Iron & Steel that enabled the firm to triple employment at its Tacoma plant.

Color photograph of Valmet vehicle being loaded onto the Swedish-based ship, "Paralla," in mid-April, 1971. The Finnish-made unit is transporting what appear to be pipes. Beyond the ship is believed to be "Big Red," the 240-foot tall container crane. The $1,200,000 crane, built in West Germany, was put into operation during inauguration ceremonies on January 26, 1971. It could lift 50 tons at a distance of 115 feet from the pier's edge. The ship is believed to be docked at Pier 4 in Tacoma. Photograph ordered by Taylor Machine Works, Louisville, Mississippi. 1972 Richards stock footage. "Dilkara" docked at Port of Tacoma adjacent to "Big Red," West German-built container crane, in late February of 1972. This is possibly the New Zealand container ship that was built in 1971. The name "Dilkara" is reportedly Australian aborigine, meaning "rainbow."

On December 30, 1971, eight members of the Unique Social & Community Club posed under an evergreen bower at the site of the sixth annual Red Rose Cotillion where college-age women made their debut into African American society. The event had previously been held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel; however, with the hotel's closing, the ball was moved to the 565 Restaurant on Broadway, the former Elks Temple. ca. 1971. Undated portrait of Governor Daniel J. Evans. Copy ordered by Associated General Contractors with whom Governor Evans was associated from 1953-60. Dan Evans has had a lengthy career in the political field. Before becoming a three-term governor from 1965-77, he served in the state House of Representatives from 1956-65. Following his terms as the state's chief executive, he turned to the field of education and became the president of Evergreen State College from 1977-83. Voters elected him to Congress in 1983 as a Senator where he served on the Energy and Natural Resources and Foreign Relations committees. Since 1989, he has been the chairman of Daniel J. Evans Associates and a regent at the University of Washington. The U.W.'s Graduate School of Public Affairs was renamed the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs in March, 1999.
