Gyro Club District Convention. Twelve guests take a break from the festivities. The Gyro Club District Number 4 held their three-day convention August 8, 9, and 10th, 1946, in Tacoma. 500 delegates representing 18 clubs from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia attended the convention. Business was conducted during the daytime. A golf tournament was held the first evening and a barbeque dinner and dance was held the second evening at the Country Club. The convention would conclude with a dinner/dance held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. (T.Times, 8/9/1946, p.1)

Dr. Hinton D. Jonez (back row, 2nd from left) holds the bottle of cognac that will go to the last survivor of the Past Commanders' Last Man Club of the Edward B. Rhodes Post No.2, American Legion. Each year the post membership feted the post commanders at a banquet. The banquet for November 1945 was held in the Army and Navy Room at the Hotel Winthrop. Red Cross pictures. In August 1944 Red Cross celebrated its 80th anniversary. The first recorded notice of Red Cross activities in Tacoma date back to October 1898. Red Cross volunteers were photographed in 1944 posing with their vehicle outside of their new headquarters at 702-04 Broadway. In August of 1944, the International Committee of the Red Cross celebrated the 80th anniversary of the first Geneva Convention. The International Red Cross was also awarded the 1944 Nobel Peace Prize. In Tacoma, the local Red Cross was founded in 1898. In July of 1916 Tacoma became an official chapter and in 1931 it was renamed the Pierce County Chapter. After several mergers, in 2008, the local Red Cross became the American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter, serving Pierce, Thurston, Mason and Lewis counties.

In September of 1944 five unidentified soldiers were photographed while resting in the temporary sleeping quarters provided in Tacoma's Union Station by the USO. During WWII the United Services Organization Travelers Aid Service provided assistance and general information to service men and their wives, newcomers, and other travelers in need of help. They could also provide spartan, overnight sleeping accommodations when called on.

A roll of paper is on a stand at the end of one of the tables ready to assist in wrapping packages. Money alone would never complete the tremendous task the Red Cross has in helping people in need. Annual meeting of the American Red Cross at the Chapter House in Tacoma in July 1949. . The Pierce County chapter was offering free home nursing courses. The program had awarded 274 home nursing certificates to students, housewives and Army wives during the previous year. It was also the first year that classes were held for Army wives at Fort Lewis. Presentation of flag to Boy Scout Troop 55, Ray Hennessy, Salishan. The Rhodes Post No. 2, American Legion, presented an American flag on January 27, 1949 to Senior Patrol Leader Chuck Buck and the Salishan Boy Scout Troop 55 to celebrate Boy Scout week that year. After demonstrating how to properly fold the American flag, the members of the American Legion presented the folded flag to the troop. Names listed in the newspaper. Tacoma's first annual Golden Gloves event was held in 1949. Bob Sanders, at right, watches as contestants weigh in at the YMCA. The big two-day fistic feature was sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission. Seven rugged fighters from Vancouver, B.C., and others from across the Northwest were in attendance. Red Cross had started their 1949 fund raising campaign in Pierce County, the organization was encouraging everyone to contribute. Pierce County's Red Cross had very talented volunteers in all of their departments, including Junior Red Cross which was established with student-age volunteers. On June 28, 1950, three unidentified members of the Alice Franklin Junior Orthopedic Guild pose with nautical equipment supplied by Steven Marine Supply. By 1954, there were 20 JOG's in the Tacoma area, each sponsored by a senior orthopedic guild of the same name. The junior guilds drew members from various local high schools with the purpose of raising money to help the Tacoma Orthopedic Association's humanitarian efforts. They promoted bake sales, dances, skating parties and other similar activities. In 1954 the JOG's were accused of opening the door for the establishment of sororities in the Tacoma high schools.(TNT 2-21-54, p. A-2)
