On June 5, 1937, as a function of the Shrine spring reunion in Tacoma, the Afifi Temple held a Ball and banquet at the Winthrop Hotel. Shriners and their wives were the guests. Here the photographer was setting up camera to take photographs of people in the receiving line.

Thousands of spectators lined the Lake Washington Ship Channel as the Afifi Temple of Tacoma float was towed by during the Shriners Marine Pageant in Seattle 7/10/1936. A huge barge carrying members of the Afifi Temple Band and a large replica of Mount Rainier is pictured just after it passes the draw of the Montlake Bridge in this night scene.The float, designed by Walt Sutter, featured thousands of gallons of water pouring down from an imitation Narada Falls. It was one of the audience's favorites. (T.Times 7/17/1936, pg. 3)

On June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners gathered in Tacoma for a spring reunion. They kicked off the get together with a parade. A long line of Shriners waited behind their drill leader for the parade to begin. Winthrop Hotel and Roxy theater on Broadway are in background.

On Monday morning August 5, 1935 the Sawmill and Timber Workers' Union strike that had crippled Tacoma's mills for 13 weeks came to an end. Mill workers, like these at the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Company returned to work. By a vote of 1,391 to 97 the union's members accepted the offer of the mill owners including a 40 hour week, an 8 hour day, and time and one-half for overtime. (T.Times 8/5/1935, pg. 1)

This happy group of unidentified lumber mill workers, entering the yards of the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co. on August 5, 1935, were returning to work after the settlement of a strike that lasted 13 weeks. Some employees proudly wear their Union buttons on their hats, celebrating their new contract. The agreement called for a 50 cent minimum wage, a 40 hour work week, an 8 hour day, time and 1/2 for overtime, reemployment of striking employees and recognition of the union. The vote on the contract was 1391 to 97. (T. Times 8/5/1935, pg. 1)

The Order of Ahepa, a national society of Americans of Greek descent, was holding its annual district convention in Tacoma at the Hotel Winthrop. Over 1500 delegates attended. Sunday was highlighted by special services at St. Nicholas and this lively picnic at Five Mile Lake. (T. Times 6/26/1936, pg. 18)

Swiss dance. Two men with cigars tending bar. The dance may have been held at the Swiss Hall, a building erected by Tacomans of Swiss ancestry. Other photographs in the same series show that the dance was attended by a large crowd. The beer was apparently free.

The 40 et 8 holds its fifth and largest interstate "wreck" in Tacoma Feb 20, 1937. The Le Societe des 40 Hommes et 3 Chavaux is the fun division of the American Legion. Its members are selected because of their exceptional service to the Legion. The "wreck" was attended by 1200 members from Washington and Oregon. (T. They were there to attend the annual dinner and hobby show of the club which was held in the hotel's Crystal Ballroom on April 12, 1940. The Spinster Club held a "Bowery" dance at the Century Ballroom in Fife on February 25, 1938. The costume cabaret dance offered favors as prizes for the best costumes. Three unidentified young women in costumes smile at a man dressed in a sailor's uniform who is lighting a candle placed in the neck of a beer bottle. The bottles with candles in them were then placed on tables as part of the New York decor. (TNT 2/24/1938, p.13-article)

Sam Perkins celebrates his 73rd birthday with friends at the Tacoma Club. Mayor Smitley (far right) and another man sing happy birthday as he prepares to blow out the candles on his huge cake. Mr. Perkins was born in Boston on May 6, 1865 and was christened Sidney Albert Perkins. That moniker was soon shortened to "Sam." For his 73rd birthday, he was feted by some of the friends he made in over 50 years of business in Tacoma. Mr. Perkins was best known locally as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. (T. On August 9, 1939, Emory Reagan Sr., a flagpole painter, used a "bos'n's chair" to ascend the 150 foot flagpole at the University Union Club at 539 Broadway. The pole took 5 1/2 hours to paint, during which time Reagan remained aloft. His young sons Duane, 8, and Emory, Jr., 11, kept him supplied with paint and brushes, sent up by a rope and pulley. Mr. Reagan was 35 at the time of this picture and lived with his wife and family at 5020 6th Ave. (T.Times 8/10/1939 p.1) cropped enlargement of D8738 image 2

Ceremonial portraits from the Daughters of the Nile convention. The female accompaniment to the Shriners, the Nile daughters traditions hark back to ancient days. The annual session of the Supreme Temple of the Daughters of the Nile was held in Tacoma June 6-10, 1938. It was the first convention of this group to be held in Tacoma since 1925. Members from all parts of the United States would be attending. (photograph also numbered Series 7247, image 11)
