On October 29, 1935, Mary E. Ketell was photographed adjusting the stage arrangement for the Maryell Puppeteers. The group was presenting the tale of "Snow White and Rose Red," under her direction, at the Elks' Fair and Merchants' Exposition at the Elks Temple in Bremerton. The group of players was made up of Patricia Eickland, Wilma Spaeth, Eileen Connelly and Betty Crawford. The Exposition featured amateur entertainers, games of chance, a carnival, a country store and drawings for prizes. (Bremerton Sun 11/1/1935, pg. 1)

Humpback salmon returning to the Puyallup River hatchery on Voight Creek, near Orting. Eight thousand salmon are collected in the gate during the two-week run. The salmon get their name "humpback" because a hump rises in the middle of their backs as they progress from salt water to fresh water. The longer they are out of salt water, the more pronounced the hump. Ordered by Duncan and Mueller. (T. Times, 10/21/1937, p. 20).

Power cruisers compete in the 8th annual power boat race, the"Capital to Capital yacht race," in July 1935. The 1935 race covered 150 nautical miles from Tacoma to Nanaimo, BC through the San Juan and British Columbia Islands. The boats would leave on Friday, 7/26, and reach BC late on 7/27. The Tacoma Yacht Club sponsored 24 entries, one of which the "Irvinetta," won second place overall. (T. Times 7/25-27, 1935; 7/29/1935, pg. 1)

Rowland (right), skipper of the Tacoma Yacht Club entry "Irvinetta" in the annual international cruiser race, the "Capital to Capital," and Matt Manay, of Olympia, prepare a code flag in connection with the start of the race. The 8th annual cruiser race would start Friday, July 26, 1935 in Tacoma and end Saturday afternoon in Nanaimo, B.C., a distance of 150 nautical miles through the Puget Sound and San Juan and British Columbia Islands. Druggist Ed R. Rowe was featured in the July 11, 1936 Bremerton Sun column "Around the Clock." He was the pharmacist and manager of Rowe's Pharmacy on Sixth St. and High Ave. in Bremerton. He was also a jack-of-all-trades at the corner drugstore, dividing his time between the cash register, preparing milk shakes and sodas at the soda fountain and mixing chemicals for prescriptions in the backroom. He was pictured standing at the soda fountain of his drug store, pouring liquid into a chemist's beaker. Soda fountain equipment, the drug store window, and neighborhood houses are visible. Pharmacist Rowe came to Bremerton in 1917 and had partnered in the Park Ave. Drug Co. with Henry Paulson. In 1932, he opened his own pharmacy and had recently moved to the pictured location. On September 9, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Elliot were photographed in the act of paying their water bill to George Nutter, assistant city treasurer. The photograph was taken at the Water Department pay window at Bremerton City Hall. Mrs. Elliot wears a light suit and coat, with the brim of a white hat pulled down over one eye. On the afternoon of October 10, 1937, hundreds gathered at the Bremerton Elks Temple to hear the announcement of the winners in the first Bremerton Community Salmon Derby. A man is standing at a microphone ready to make the announcement on a balcony above a panel truck that has two loud speakers on its roof. The entire block between Fourth and Fifth St. on Pacific Ave. was roped off for the crowd. Over 50 prizes were awarded to the top anglers, with the first two prizes being new Ford V8 sedans. Two hundred retail businesses in downtown Tacoma took part in a special fall United Tacoma Days sale from October 7 through 9, 1937. During the three day sale free bus and streetcar transporation was available in the downtown shopping area from 9:30 to 11 each morning.This little girl could be selecting a new book at the Book Nook in the Rhodes Brothers Department Store, at Sharman's Bookstore, or at one of the other five booksellers that could be found in the retail center of Tacoma in 1937. Rodella Hockom placed the crown on Snow Queen Maurita Shank's head on January 30, 1937 during the 6th Annual Tacoma Winter Sports Carnival at Paradise, Mt. Rainier Park. Standing with Queen Maurita are her ladies in waiting Mary Brockhoff (L) and Billie Woodruff. Snow fell all day on the 30th, hampering attendance at the Carnival, but delighting the Queen and her Court who only paused in their skiing long enough for this informal crowning. The official coronation never took place. The 133 inches of snow on the ground at Paradise made for great skiing, but hazardous driving and festival participants only numbered about 2500. In March of 1937, the Stadium High School orchestra was tuning up and practicing for the upcoming premier of the original opera "Masquerade," written by their instructor Clayton Johnson, shown here conducting. Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of Puget Sound and after further studies, returned to Tacoma to take the post of Director of Music at Stadium High School. He held that position for 30 years, counting among his students Janis Paige, star of stage and screen, and Metropolitan Opera performers Roald Reitan and Hugh Thompson. "Masquerade" was one of two operas Mr. Johnson wrote during his tenure at Stadium. He died in June of 1982 at the age of 83. (T. Times, 04-01-1937, p.1; TNT 06-21-1982, pg. C-12)

Tacoma delegates to the P.T.A. Congress, 26th annual convention. Over 500 delegates from all parts of the state of Washington and British Columbia gathered in Tacoma to discuss education. Five women, some wear delegate ribbons, all wear "hostess" ribbons. The women are, left to right, Mrs. R.C. In July of 1937, Tacoma Humane Society officer John P. Smith posed with a homeless cocker spaniel dog, that he named Buddy, and two kittens. He was dressed in a uniform with a star badge and high gaiters, possibly to protect his calves. J.P. Smith found Buddy a week prior at No. 37th and Verde. After this picture ran in the Tacoma Times, fifteen people offered to adopt Buddy. According to the 1935 City Directory, Mr. Smith resided at 3617 S. Proctor.The articles of incorporation establishing the Tacoma Humane Society were signed on October 5, 1888. Its purpose was to "promote humanity, and kindness, and to prevent cruelty to both man and the lower animals." A shelter was built in 1928 in a home on South 29th and Proctor Street, 2817 So. Proctor. For many years, one officer handled the duties in the field while a couple served as caretakers for the sheltered animals. (T. Times 8/6/1935, pg. 3)
