ca. 1979. Photograph taken in 1979 of the Old City Hall's clock tower, located at 625 Commerce. The building was constructed in 1892 and abandoned by the city government in 1959 after the construction of the County-City building. Saved from demolition, it was restored as a shopping center with grand opening in 1974. In 1980 it was converted into an office building. The 32-square foot tower had its bell chimes restored in late 1993. The Old City Hall is on the City, State, and National Registry.

ca. 1979. Newly constructed Schuster Parkway, formerly Bayside Dr., circa 1979. Schuster Parkway is a 4-lane divided expressway connecting the end of I-705 to the older part of Tacoma. ("Old Town") Bayside Dr. was renamed Schuster Parkway in May of 1975 in honor of former Public Works head Gilbert M. Schuster who had died in June of 1974.

ca. 1979. View of native American style graphics on the window glass of the Anchor Tavern, 1352 Pacific Ave., as well as a neon representation of the emblem for Rainier Beer. The Tavern was located in the former McCormack Bro. Department Store, 1348-56 Pacific Ave, in 1979. McCormack Bro. was located in the Baker-Dickson Building; constructed in 1911, Russell & Babcock, architects. The building was demolished in 2003.

ca. 1979. 1979 photograph of "Fidelity" inscription over the door at McCarver School, 2111 So. J St. The school was Tacoma's third intermediate school, opening in 1925. It was part of the plan to arrange Tacoma Public Schools in a 6-3-3 year ratio, representing years in elementary, junior and high schools. The structure was designed by architects Hill & Mock. Elementary classes were added in 1938. In 1968, the School Board discontinued junior high classes at McCarver to facilitate desegregation.

ca. 1979. The gaily striped awning decorates the exterior of Tutor Craft Interiors at 1531 Market St. In 1979, a newly remodeled store had opened following a disastrous fire in Jan. of 1978. The business had opened in 1944 and specialized in custom draperies.

ca. 1979. 1979 Photograph of the west side of the 1300 block of Pacific. The buildings are, left to right, the Ouimette-Littlejohn Building at 1314 Pacific Ave. and the David Levin Building at 1312 Pacific Ave. The Quimette-Littlejohn Building was constructed around 1883 and was named after its builders. In 1979, it was home to the U & I Cafe. It has since been demolished. The David Levin Block was built in 1908. In 1979, it was home to Pacific Loans. It has also been demolished.

ca. 1979. The three year old Bicentennial Pavilion, 1313 Market St., was photographed in 1979. It was designed by Tacoma architect Robert Billsbrough Price and opened on June 25, 1976. It was remodeled and renamed the Tacoma Convention Center in 1992.

ca. 1979. Faded Columbia Brewery mural on side of building, circa 1979. "Everybody knows it's better, Alt Heidelberg," accompanied by a stein lifting image of the company's signature student prince. The "ghost sign" dates back to 1933 when Columbia Brewery was still making its special lager brew Alt Heidelberg (Old Heidelberg.) ca. 1979. "Veracity" is carved over the door of McCarver School, 2111 So. J St., circa 1979. The modified Gothic structure was designed by Hill & Mock, architects. It opened its doors November 2, 1925 as the city's third intermediate school; elementary classes were added in 1938 and the junior high portion was discontinued in 1968. The school was named for Tacoma pioneer and early school district director Morton Matthew McCarver.
