Laying floor covering at Devlin Home, DFPA, Hal Dixon. Two workmen are laying asbestos tile over a plywood sub-floor using a dark, very sticky adhesive. These are some of the final touches in completing the Devlin's renovated home on Steilacoom Lake.

His older daughter is typing at a desk with a goose-neck lamp on the corner. A combination radio-phonograph is shown on a table that has a storage area below for phonograph records. A two-story, Dutch Colonial home of W. Kostick, at 115 7th St. in Auburn, has recently been resided with wide shingles. Concrete steps, set at an angle to the house, lead up to the front door. The downspout curves to be able to follow the line of one of the double supporting columns at the front of the porch. Ordered by Linwood Sales. Compare with D49,047-2.

Exterior of plywood house owned by Mr. H.J. Cox, Eugene, Oregon. This one-story home has been covered with wide pieces of plywood painted a light color with narrow banding between each piece painted a dark color. A house and shed perch at the top of a cliff above where dirt is being removed for construction near Puyallup Ave. in Tacoma. This is possibly the site that is being cleared for the construction of Tacoma's new sanitation plant.

After photograph, of the three-story apartment house at 13th and Market, the LeRoy Apartments. The detailing in the window shapes has been repeated in the detail at the cornice. A man looks out from the upper, front window. The sign on the lower left corner indicates the building was recently reshingled with John's-Manville asbestos shingles by Blair Construction. Exposure of house at 4551 Sixth Avenue. This exterior view of the home located at 4551 Sixth Avenue was taken on July 11, 1950. It was the residence of Thomas T. and Belle B. Richmond. Built in 1927, this Tudor-style home had a steeply pitched roof and arched doorways and windows. There was a small balcony built above a side entry which overlooked the yard's many bushes and shrubs. House being lowered on barge for 4th of July show. A house is being carefully lowered by crane onto a barge at the Port of Tacoma and will be towed to Commencement Bay. As the sign on the old wood framed house proclaims, it will be set afire on the evening of the 4th of July as part of the Tacoma Athletic Commission's Big Free Show. The City Fireboat will be present to extinguish the flames.

Rhodes Brothers Department Store offered Tacoma one of the largest and most complete shopping selections available. Rhodes had remodeled and enlarged many of their departments over the past few years. Rhodes Brothers Department stores had been remodeling and modernizing their facilities for many years, since World War II had ended. Rhodes was one of the nicest stores in Tacoma, located on Broadway in the downtown district. The building had a modern heat pump that was used in heating and cooling the facilities. This heat pump could extract heat or cold from well water as deep as 500 feet below the building. The Equitable Building was an amazing combination of two-toned aluminum and glass, with not a square inch of masonry showing above the first floor. The windows in the building stretch from column to column, but not from floor to ceiling. This building made a striking advance in technological skyscraper planning. Architect Pietro Belluschi's design was able to achieve a perfect expression of the standard concrete cage. The Equitable Building was the first skyscraper to be constructed in Portland in 25 years. This new modern building, designed by Northwest architect Pietro Belluschi, was not well received in Portland at first, because of the "skeleton outline" structure. George G. Franklin's family home was the winner of the Tacoma Times House Beautiful contest in 1947, this house had also been nominated in 1920. The home, located in Tacoma's Stadium-Annie Wright Historical District, eventually became the Central Lutheran Church Parsonage in 1975. In 1889 James N. Buckley was planning to build an elaborate house on this lot and a local newspaper featured a story with describing the future home. For some unknown reason the house was never built. Charles H. Hyde had this house at 425 Tacoma Avenue North built in 1905; it was later owned by Harold A. Allen, Henry Rhodes and George G. Franklin. Hundreds of people enjoyed the 2-hour bus tour of the entries in the 2nd Annual Tacoma Beautiful Contest, afterwards everyone gathered at Hotel Winthrop's Crystal Ballroom for a tea reception and awaited the announcement of the winners. Leon Titus announced the winners and awarded the prizes. View of John Kellson's home, garden is on opposite side, lamppost in foreground, the Kellson home was awarded 2nd place (T. In September 1948, 62,559 residents in Tacoma had telephones; this number would continue to increase as the phone company got closer to completing their expansion and improvement program. The telephone growth rate was three times as fast as before and during World War II. The Fawcett building was four stories with a basement of steel frame construction, fireproof and reinforced concrete with brick and terra cotta facing; the building addition was at the rear of the main building. The Equitable Building, later known as the Commonwealth Building, was an ethereal tower of sea green glass and aluminum.
