C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

Dissension was in the air on April 17, 1946, when approximately 50 students from Robert Gray Jr. High took to the streets to protest what they termed the "firing" of physical education teacher Victor Kovack by Principal Carroll A. Payne. The protest continued for 3 days, gathering up to 150 students demanding the removal of Principal Payne. When police forced the picketers from in front of the building, they paraded through the streets of South Tacoma. Kovack and Principal Payne had disagreed over the use of corporal punishment at the school, with Kovack opposing it. Students were advised that Mr. Kovack had been transferred, not fired, by the school district. After an investigation by the school board into the alleged physical punishments, Principal Payne was exonerated, but the regulations concerning corporal punishment in the schools were more clearly defined and published. Miss Arlene Wilson of Stewart Jr. High School was declared the school's third annual "posture queen" at a school assembly on Friday May 7, 1943. Demonstrating the posture that made her the winner, Miss Wilson holds the recognition plaque that she received from Principal George Burlingame as she stands in front of her court of "posture duchesses". The twelve girls represented the twelve physical education classes taught by Miss Elsie Morris. In April of 1943 the first grade students at Central School learned about the complexities of cooking. Working with equipment and materials provided by the Washington Dairy Council, the students prepared their own lunch, and learned how cooking depends on the skills of reading, arithmetic, writing and hygiene. Central School 1B Class. First graders learn to cook. Two unidentified boys measure carefully the ingredients to their hot cocoa. They are learning to cook in a program, partially sponsored by the Dairy Council, entitled "Winning the war by keeping well." Several groups at Stewart Junior High School, Mrs. Andres, Times. Stewart Junior High School held its eight annual May festival May 7, 1948. Queen Arlee Curtice is seated on a stool raised higher than the others who are seated on stools. The other young women are her posture duchesses. They are dressed in summer play clothes including pedal pushers, shorts, and blouses, some with midriffs exposed. Helen Andres was one of the directors of the May festival for 1948. Panhellenic Tea at Great Hall, Annie Wright, News Tribune, Mrs. Hosmer. The Tacoma Panhellenic honored graduating senior high school girls and their mothers at their annual tea on April 24, 1948, at the Great Hall at Annie Wright. The program consisted of talks by Miss Maxine Blake and Miss Jacquine Norback about college life from the student's view point. Lona Huseby played Chopin and Debussy on the piano. Manitou School group. A group portrait of one of the school classes at Manitou School. There are thirteen girls and sixteen boys.The School Board was faced with tough questions in 1911. How to provide for a school population that was increasing at the rate of nearly 1,000 new students per year? Voters approved a special levy on May 6, 1911, for several new elementary schools and a new high school. A portable was secured for the Manitou neighborhood and in September, Sara Cochrane began teaching the first three grades in the one-room building. Mr. Lennard Anderson, director of music at Central School, was photographed reviewing some of the arrangements to be performed for students at the February 18, 1948 concert by the Pacific Northwest Symphony Orchestra. He was playing with his right hand and pointing at the music with his left hand for a group of fifth grade students at the school. The students were, L-R, Jean Needham, Francis Moore, Ryo Inouye, Darrell Strain, Jeanine Miller and Marlys Bod. The February concert would be the last of a series of concerts performed specifically for children, presented by the Tacoma Philharmonic Association and underwritten by Medosweet Dairies.
