Approximately 50 members of the Lions Club met in front of Washington Hardware on the Commerce Street side on May 10, 1950, to pick up tools they would need during Tacoma's Clean-Up, Paint-Up, Fix-Up week. The Lions' committee, headed by acting postmaster John McMonagle, had been working with the Painting and Decorating Contractors, Paint Salesmen's Club and the Lincoln Lions on a program to bring every civic, fraternal and garden club together on this year's clean-up. Formal photograph of Normanna Male Chorus at Normanna Hall. The Hall was the home of the Norway Club. The Chorus's costume carries out a nautical theme with blazers and Captain's hats. The Chorus, organized in 1888, was the oldest Norwegian singing organization in the west. The Chorus held its first sangerfest in Tacoma in 1906. The first director was Professor Carlo Sperati. George S. Johnson served as director for 30 years. The current conductor is Gunnar J. Malmin, center of the front row in the tuxedo, composer and director of PLC Choir of the West. A capacity crowd attended Jack Lacy's Sales Clinic at the College of Puget Sound that was presented by the Tacoma Sales Executive Club over three evenings. All shows were sold out days ahead of the lectures. William S. Crean, vice president of Lacey Sales Institute, flew from San Francisco for a three-city itinerary which included Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle, and Tacoma. (TNT, 2/2/1952, p.19)

Members of the American Legion's Last Man Club met in November, 1951, in the Model Grill's Flame Room. All the men are wearing caps denoting the Tacoma affiliation. The Club was formed in December of 1938 by World War I veterans who were past Commanders of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion. Eight flags are draped over empty chairs in front of the standing men, to honor those who have passed away. The last survivor would receive a 1917 bottle of cognac, kept in a safe deposit box at Puget Sound Bank.

Articles from the collection of Mrs. J.C. Haley were to be part of the international exhibit held at the Y.W.C.A. on November 29, 1951. Mrs. Herman Myhrman, Mrs. Norman Grant and Chinese visitor Miss Ann Sun (from left) happily examine some of the majolica ware from Italy that Mrs. Haley collected on her last visit to Europe. National costumes, folk songs and other collections from foreign lands would be displayed for the public in Weyerhaeuser Hall. This exhibit would be the climax of the World Fellowship Week. The Vera T. Davis Orthopedic Guild presented their annual puppet show on October 14, 1950, at the Jason Lee auditorium. Practicing before an appreciative audience of four wide-eyed youngsters is show chairman Mrs. Robert E. Meyer and her large marionette, Paul Bunyan, lumberjack renowned. Standing are Donald Urban (6) and Danny Barclay (7) with Anitra Vadheim (3) and John Ogren (2 1/2) at their feet. "Paul Bunyan and the Adventure of the Wooden Hotcakes" was performed twice that Saturday. Children of this era were already familiar with marionettes such as the very popular Howdy Doody, who was broadcast by NBC starting in 1947, and Disney's Pinocchio, which was released in 1940. 115 Boy Scout executives met at the College of Puget Sound in September, 1950, for a week long training session on administration and finance. Although the Boy Scout leaders meet annually, this was the first time they had ever met in Tacoma. Seven national leaders and Governor Arthur B. Langlie were also in attendance. (TNT 9-3-50, p. A-6)

Tacoma firefighter Ray Hammond prepares to fill a rubber raft containing a model of the second Narrows Bridge with water. The model of the bridge was built by members of the Tacoma Fire Department. Once the raft is filled with water, the water will be decorated with chysanthemum-covered floats. All of this hard work was to benefit the Tacoma and District annual flower show held October 7-8, 1950. Holding the model bridge steady is Lt. Raymond Greenleaf, its designer. A view of the front of "The Northwesterner," a model home built by the Tacoma Master Builders Association, for the 1951 Home Show. Designed by Spokane architect Bruce Walker, the home was constructed of red cedar siding with all weather plywood and located in the Skyline Terrace Addition. TPL-7636

A conversation area has been created off the main part of the living room in "The Northwesterner". Two side chairs and a sofa have been arranged around a coffee table. A china cabinet has been added to provide storage in this area. Two torcheres provide upward lighting at either end of the sofa. Doors can be seen on the right. TPL-7644

Earl Craig, Master of Foxhounds, steadies the ladder while his wife Leona touches the Woodbrook sign on their brand new red barn. The Woodbrook sign is made of white horseshoes. The Craigs suffered tremendous losses when Woodbrook caught fire in the summer of 1950. A small white sign warning that smoking is prohibited around the stables is a sober reminder of fire's dangers. The 50th anniversary of the Virginia Dare chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution was celebrated with a guest tea at the Washington State Historical Society museum on Monday, September 10, 1951. For the second year in a row, the Royal Arch Masons of Washington met at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the Mark Masters degree to certain recipients in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout Washington congregated in August, 1951; invitations were limited to Masons only and not the general public. Centralia Chapter #44 coordinated the gathering while officers of Sunset Chapter #23, Chehalis, opened the ceremonies. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)
