Informal shoveling contest during October, 1940, ground breaking at C.P.S.for new Student Union Building. Mayor Harry Cain, in hat and cigarette in mouth, squats at right center. Norton Clapp is to Cain's left in photo. Norton Clapp served as a trustee of the college (later University) for 62 years, 19 of those as chairman of the board of trustees. Students and invited guests chortle at the sight of the unannounced shoveling contest pitting Bishop Bruce Baxter of Willamette University, C.P.S. president Edward H. Todd, Board of Trustees president E.L. Blaine and trustee Albert H. Hooker, Jr., on October 16, 1940. The contest was diplomatically declared a draw. Trustee Hooker was disqualified because his first shovelful of dirt fell on Dr. Todd's neck. Norton Clapp would go on to win the actual 4-man shoveling contest, besting Mayor Cain, the student body president and Chamber of Commerce president. On November 8, 1940, the freshmen presented Booth Tarkington's comedy "The Travelers" before a student assembly. The cast included Art Sheets, Ruth Hanawalt, Roberta Humble, Ed Ercegovic, George Victor, Dorothea Federico, Bob Albertson, Gordon Soder, Everett Lowther, Patricia Hanson and Frank Hicks. The Tacoma Art League sponsored the 17th annual South & West art exhibit in the College of Puget Sound's Jones Hall beginning on April 3, 1957. 64 entries were accepted out of the 204 submitted. Robert Feasley, C.P.S. art instructor, won "Best of Show" for his oil "City Night." First prize in watercolors went to Ruth Babbit for her "Riot." On September 30, 1941, before moving into the College of Puget Sound's new Student Union building, representatives of the campus sororities meet to draw lots for room assignments. Numbers were drawn from a box held by Barbara Tomlinson, the pictured small daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Warren Tomlinson. Former State Senator and College of Puget Sound history professor Walter Davis, for alumni magazine. Hat in hand, Sen. Davis poses on the brick steps leading to Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. He represented the people of the 27th District in the State Legislature for eight consecutive terms from 1913-1929. All the while he remained a college professor, having come to CPS in 1907 to teach history and political science. He was a member of the Board of Curators of the Historical Society since 1914, a member of the Tacoma Park Board from 1927-32 and a director of Central Bank since the bank's founding. Sen. Publicity for March of Dimes. Stepping off with their best foot forward are volunteers for the January, 1966, Mothers March (of Dimes.) Posed on the steps of Jones Hall located on the University of Puget Sound campus are four UPS students who are helping the campaign: Gay Brazas, Blake Barfuss, Steve Kneeshaw and John Gruen. They are accompanied by Mrs. Robert Hash and Mrs. Robert Strobel carrying signs marking January 27th as the date of the Mothers March. Mrs. Hash and Mrs. Strobel were the Pierce County and Tacoma Mothers March chairpersons, and were prepared to lead hundreds of volunteers on the one-day march. Choral group at the University of Puget Sound. The university's Madrigal Singers posed for a group portrait in the school's Jacobsen Recital Hall on November 11, 1966. Directed by Dr. Bruce Rodgers, the Madrigal Singers were preparing to present the 15th annual Christmas program December 6-10th on campus. Group portrait of 15-member Madrigal Singers on the campus of the University of Puget Sound, taken on November 18, 1967. KTNT-TV was apparently televising the college students' performance. Each year the Madrigal Singers, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Rodgers, presented a Christmas program for fellow students and the general public. View of elaborate, newly completed $4,000,000 science complex located at the University of Puget Sound. Taking over two years to construct, the complex, named after 26-year-president R. Franklin Thompson, would be dedicated on April 21, 1968. Its Tutor-Gothic style of architecture neatly fit in with the remainder of the campus located in the city's north end. The 74-foot diameter water fountain, located in the Harry Brown Family Quadrangle, could be illuminated at night. President Thompson had led the school into an era of major expansion which included the construction of four dorms, the president's brick home, library, music building, student center, eight men's housing, two women's dorms, Baker (football) Stadium, Kilworth Chapel and McIntyre Hall. New science complex at the University of Puget Sound. After more than two years of construction, the new science building, named in honor of longtime U.P.S. president R. Franklin Thompson, was dedicated in April, 1968. The $4,000,000 science complex was the largest building project in the school's (then) 80-year history. It was designed by Nelson, Karona & Zeigler, architects, and built by McDonald Bldg. Co. View of U-shaped, three story Thompson Hall facing Union Ave., shows off the Tudor-Gothic brick architecture. A circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, lay in the middle of the complex. The fountain would become the scene in the coming years of much illicit wading, dunkings and pranks. Close-up of splashing fountain in new science complex at the University of Puget Sound. The circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, was in the middle of the U-shaped, three story Gothic-Tudor Thompson Hall. The $4,000,000 project was dedicated on April 21, 1968. In 2005 the university decided to build a new 51,000 sq.foot science building linking the north and south wings of Thompson Hall, thereby displacing the fountain and a large sequoia tree. The school hoped to build a new highly visible water feature on the west side of campus. (www.ups.edu)

About 100 cheerleaders met at the University of Puget Sound on August 6, 1968 for a six-day cheerleading workshop. They are posed in front of the Tudor-styled brick building housing the music department. The junior high and high school pepsters were from throughout Washington and Idaho and stayed in dormitories on campus. Cheerleading camp. About 90 cheerleaders gathered at the University of Puget Sound in mid-July of 1969 for several days of cheerleading camp. Wearing their respective school cheer outfits, the junior high and high school pepsters hailing from Washington and Idaho posed in front of the university's music building. Adelphian Choir. Resplendent in gowns of turquoise and elegant tuxedos, the 42-voice Adelphian Choir from the University of Puget Sound posed for a group portrait in the school's music building on January 12, 1970. They were led by Dr. Bruce Rodgers, director of the School of Music. The acclaimed choir was formed in 1932 and have performed locally and toured nationally.
