Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. College of Puget Sound's orchestra was first called the Puget Sound Symphony, then later changed their name to the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. Raymond Vaught was the conductor, Clyde Keutzer was the head of the music department at CPS. Aside from the orchestra CPS music department had the Adelphian Choir and the Women's Chorus. Baby Kathleen Ann McKenty celebrated both St. Patrick's Day and her first birthday in March 1947. Her parents brought her over to a stone found behind the College of Puget Sound women's dormitory in order to teach her about the "Blarney Stone" of Blarney Castle, located near Cork, Ireland. Her parents hoped to bring Kathleen to the real Blarney Stone someday - which is supposed to confer the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney) to all who kiss it. Kathleen is the granddaughter of Harry Sprinker, who would hold the office of Pierce County Commissioner for 20 years. She did not get to visit Ireland with her parents as they both died when she was young. Kathleen would go on to marry John Hartman and presently resides in Snohomish. Nearly 60 years after this photograph was taken, the Hartmans are planning their first trip to Ireland in 2007. (T. Times, 3/17/47, p. 1; additional information provided by a reader).

College of Puget Sound purchased U. S. Army surplus buildings in 1947. These buildings would be used to provide more classrooms, they were assembled, renovated and christened as "South Hall". The College of Puget Sound Loggerettes and the Yell Team helped cheer on the athletic teams and they motivated and promoted student involvement in many other school activities. R. Franklin Thompson, President of College of Puget Sound, is wearing a baseball mitt and standing on the C.P.S. baseball field. Thompson had a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), he had been the President at C.P.S. for many years. President Thompson liked to get involved in many of the College activities (Tamanawas, 1947).

R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

On a sunny day in May, 1947, Louise Kepper, a senior at the College of Puget Sound, stops to admire the "Kissing Posts" taken from the campus of Pacific Lutheran University by students of the College of Puget Sound. The CPS students set the posts, engraved with initials on every surface, in cement. CPS students were posted to guard their color posts from possible PLC "raiders". (T.Times, 5/5/1947, p.14)

College of Puget Sound graduation. The College of Puget Sound held their 59th commencement exercises at Jones Hall, May 26, 1947. Two honorary degrees were given this year. The Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon William Bowman who was recently named superintendent of the Vancouver area of the Methodist Church. The Doctor of Human Letters was conferred upon Charles A. Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. College of Puget Sound's Natural Sciences Department remodeled their labs and installed florescent lighting this year. The chemistry department received a $3500 research grant from the Research Corporation, they are the only small college in the state to receive this honor. Dr. Raymond Sanford Seward, Ph. In 1947, Harvey Wegner was a senior at College of Puget Sound where he was majoring in Physics and Mathematics. Harvey was a member of the Intercollegiate Knights, Mu Sigma Delta and the American Chemical Society. Harvey, along with another student and a professor at CPS, helped create a "rain making machine." College of Puget Sound was first established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888 as the Puget Sound University, the school is no longer affiliated with the Methodist Church. Student enrollment had increased and the school was also participating in the post war boom and development. New buildings were built and student activities and celebrations were at an all time high. In October of 1947, the Sigma Nu fraternity at CPS (UPS) hosted a Halloween costume party for fraternity members and their guests. The various revelers dressed up as angels, devils, ghosts and pirates. The distinguished fellow who seems to be dressed as a college professor was in fact Dr. Charles T. Battin, Professor of Economics and Chairman of the Social Studies Division. The couple behind him are Edwin G. Cook III (in sombrero) and, to the right next to ghost, Barbera Jean (Rojean) Knight. The pair married on December 31, 1947. (Tamanawas, 1948).

College of Puget Sound 1947 homecoming football game was being played against the Willamette Bearcats. CPS football coach, Frank Patricks, was hopeful that their losing streak would end with the homecoming game. The Loggers had played against, San Jose and Whitman, and had lost those games. Coach Patricks stated that although they had not won a game yet, they had improved from last season.
