The Elks Club appears packed on November 28, 1956, as members wait for promised entertainment on Old Timers Club night. The orchestra is seated, sheet music open and ready. The piano bench is empty although there is an organist at his keyboard. Elks Extravaganza, 1955 edition. A man in a tuxedo, most probably show director Bert Kool, interviews a well dressed "lady" in front of the curtain. The "lady" is actually a fellow Elk dressed as a woman. The one and a half hour show featured many Elks dressing as the "other half" all in good fun, for the amusement of their fellow members and guests. The annual show featured music, magic, dance and vaudeville routines. The 1955 show was dedicated to former vaudevillian and previous years' director Max Frolic, who was recovering from an illness of several months.

The cast of the 8th annual Elks Extravaganza, 1955 edition. The two and one half hour event would take place at the Elks Temple March 30 & 31, 1955. The Thursday night performance would be only for Elks, their wives and friends. This year's cast is honoring Max Frolic, the director of the show in years past, who recently recovered from an illness of several months. Bert Kool served as entertainment chairman and musical director in 1955. The "Elks Dolls," the rather frumpy looking "women" in the back row opened the show. Listed as part of the Old City Hall Historic District on the Tacoma Register of Historic Places, State Register of Historic Places, and National Register. Undergoing renovation currently after years of disrepair, this building is scheduled to reopen as a hotel, spa, brewpub and music venue in Spring 2012.

Governor Albert D. Rosellini was the guest speaker at the Tacoma Ad Club's luncheon at the Elks Club on September 9, 1964. Governor Rosellini was attempting to secure a third term as the state's chief executive. Club member Richard Wilkins (center) and club president Michael Rourke (left) stand near the governor. The Tacoma Ad Club was a civic organization for persons involved in the advertising profession. The advertising club dated back to the 1920s.

Elks Temple. June, 1926, view of the Elks Temple as seen from Commerce Street. At this time, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174, had been at this location for 10 years. The elegant structure was one of Tacoma's showcases and its 64 Spanish steps, built to serve as a fire escape, were designed after the Scala di Spagna of Rome, steps that once led to the Spanish Embassy. This group of churchwomen standing at the foot of the Spanish steps, near the Elks Lodge, have volunteered to prepare and serve lunches to workers in the War Chest fundraising campaign. They are standing on the steps at the entrance to the Elks Ballroom where the daily campaign report lunches will be served. The campaign is scheduled to begin October 19th. On October 20, 1942, a "pay your own way" report lunch was held in the ballroom of the Elks Lodge at 565 Broadway. The purpose of the lunch was for workers in the fund raising campaign to report back with how much money they had raised.

Members of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Welders and Helpers Union #568 collected $700 from members to help locally during the 1942 Christmas season. The donated money was divided equally between the Elks Stocking Fillers and the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. Here a night deposit sack containing $350 is presented to the Elks to help pay for their annual Christmas morning party for needy children. Tacoma's Own Quiz Kids pose on the Spanish steps at the Elks Lodge in October of 1942. The ninth graders from Mason Intermediate School had written and prepared a script that discussed the various agencies and functions of the War Chest of Tacoma. With the upcoming War Chest fund raiser, the students were available to speak at public functions. The Quiz Kids was a popular radio program that originated in June of 1940 on NBC radio from Chicago. Fifty two members of area law enforcement agencies took part in the American Red Cross first aid class held in the Elks Temple Auditorium at 565 Broadway on February 20, 1945. Over seventy people participated in the class led by Gordon "Red" Tatum, Tacoma's safety engineer (standing, far right), including Tom Ross the Tacoma Chief of Police (front row, center) who is practicing his first aid technique on Safety Commissioner Einar Langseth.(T. Publicity photo of a group of 5 for Elks Extravaganza, Elks Auditorium. The 5th annual Tacoma Elks Extravaganza, under the direction of old time vaudeville star Max Frolic, was presented March 25-26, 1952. The Wednesday performance was exclusively for local lodge members and the Thursday performance was open to all Elks, their ladies and friends. New officers were installed at the Tacoma Lodge of Elks for 1951-1952 May 5, 1951, at an impressive ceremony under the direction of the past exalted rulers. The new exalted ruler was Harold L. (Bud) Duncan. Other officers were John S. Roberts, leading knight; Arthur J. Emery, lecturing knight; E.O. Johnson, secretary; Walter E. Elks Club members with 25 years of service or longer were being honored by the club on January 26, 1949. Cecil Walrath, Elks Exalted Ruler, stated the club would be honoring over 400 men. "Old Timers" would march to the lodge room and after a short business section, a two hour entertainment program would begin. The program would include a professional vaudeville show, Elks band performances and surprises. View of ten Elks Club members all of whom may be officers of the club. More than 150 boys were sworn in as School Patrol Officers, taking their oaths and joining the 600 other student officers in Tacoma. The Tacoma School District initiated the student safety program 20 years ago and since that time there have been about 10,000 patrol officers. The Elks were organized to inculcate the principles of charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity; the club promotes members' welfare and enhances the happiness of its members. The Elks believe they can increase American Patriotism and cultivate good fellowship. Tacoma's Elks Club was having their annual "Extravaganza" event. This year's show would include a short concert by the Elks band, ten all-Elks acts, and a minstrel show. All benefits from the show would be used to help send the local Elks Band to the Grand Lodge Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The newly appointed Elks Exalted Ruler, John H. Three two-man crews of painters work from platforms suspended on the south wall of the Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, in August of 1947. The temple, dedicated on February 22, 1916, was designed by E. Frere Champney. The staircase next to the building, that connects Broadway with Commerce St., is known as the Spanish steps, and were intended to serve as a fire escape for the building. The Elks Temple has fallen into disrepair, and its future is in question. TPL-8446

A memorial service and tribute was held for Walter Sutter at the Elks Club, where fellow Elks members, family and friends paid their respects to their beloved friend. Douglas Fir Plywood Association.
