Genevieve Brophy (left) and Anna Fuchs, employees of the main central office of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co., sit at the new Hotel Winthrop switchboard surrounded by 300 desk telephones. After the telephones and switchboard were installed, the Hotel Winthrop became the first Tacoma hotel to have a telephone in every room. The switchboard was located on the roof garden floor of the hotel in a private room set apart from public view. It was staffed by four young women and chief operator Mrs. Johanna Hicks, who maintained the hotel's service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (TNT 5/16/1925, pg 3) negative A1001-0, TPL-9971

ca. 1926. Lesson in Friendship by Tacoma Knights of Pythias at the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. The fraternal order was founded in 1864 by Justus H. Rathbone on the principles of friendship, charity and benevolence, or "FCB" the letters inscribed on the triangles that make up the group's emblem. One of the main themes in the group's ceremonies is the fast friendship of Damon and Pythias. (filed with Argentum)

Members of the Western Retail Lumbermens' Association pose in February of 1927 in front of a little bungalow erected on the roof of the Winthrop Hotel in honor of the group's annual convention. The bungalow was made entirely of local wood and demonstrated its use in construction. When the 24th annual convention concluded February 26, 1927, new leaders had been elected for the coming year. On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times Spring Fashion section hit the newstands, featuring two couples modeling the latest in suits and coats from Klopfenstein's, Inc. Gathered around the piano at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit and Irene Tollefson, also in Rothmoor. On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times ran their Spring Fashion section, featuring two couples modeling the newest styles of suits and coats from Klopfenstein's Inc. Pictured left to right at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks, of Dallas Texas, in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit, Irene Tollefson in Rothmoor and Vic Vine in Hart Schaffner. International flavor Military Reserve Officers Ball, sponsored by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association February 18, 1939 at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. Army, Navy and Marine officers from Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and nearby cities, as well as officers of the famed Seaforth Highlanders of British Columbia, dance with their partners under row of flags representing the two countries and their various regiments. Over 500 persons were expected to attend the dance. Canada was represented by officers of the Irish Fusiliers and British Columbia Hussars, as well as the Highlanders in their bright plaids. (T. Reserve Officers International Military Ball held February 18, 1939 at the Hotel Winthrop's Crystal Ballroom. Major Harold E. Snider, of Vancouver, B.C., dressed in kilts, and wife as well as Mrs. Nelson Lynde and Colonel A. W. Melchoir, of the Tacoma Reserve Officers group, are shown arriving at Winthrop Hotel for the dance. The ball was to be attended by regular and reserve officers of all military branches in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia and surrounding cities, as well as select Canadian regiments. Canada was sending officer representatives of the Seaforth Highlanders, British Columbia Hussars and Irish Fusiliers. All of the officers were resplendent in their elaborate dress uniforms. (T. International-style Military Ball held February 18, 1939 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop. Military officers and wives or guests converse under the guard of three men in uniform, perhaps the Color Guard. Elaborate wallcoverings in background. Over 500 persons attended the ball hosted by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association. The officers represented every military branch in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia and surrounding cities. Guests from Canada included 55 officers from the famed Seaforth Highlanders as well as the Irish Fusiliers and the British Columbia Hussars. The color guard was drawn from Ft. An International-style Reserve Officers Military Ball was held on February 18, 1939, at the Crystal Ballroom in the Hotel Winthrop with over 500 people in attendance. Members of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders from Vancouver, British Columbia, performed a highlander's dance for officers from Washington State. One of the most anticipated social events for the younger set in 1938 was the "Club of Hearts" yearly formal ball held in the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom on December 26, 1938. Helen Feek, Lorraine Ronquist, Sheryl Nyman, and Marcelle Patrick smilingly glance back over their shoulders to have their picture taken. November, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance at the Hotel Winthrop. Merritt Nelson, Florence McLean, Betty Noble, and Weymar Rosso converse during intermission. This was the first joint dance given by a sorority and a fraternity located at the College of Puget Sound and the first formal dance held in several years. (T. Times, 12-3-38, p. 9)

The Crystal Ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop was the site of the November 25, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance. One couple sitting on edge of table catch-up on events with another couple who is just arriving. Streamline formals seem to have been popular that year as well as marcelled hairdos. (T.
