The White and Gold Baton Troupe. Twenty-eight girls dressed in satin costumes as drum majorettes and posed with batons in the Knights of Pythias Castle Hall in May of 1939. The head majorette, front and center, has been identified as Connie Francis Imus. Wallace Cory Imus, man on the extreme right back row, organized the White and Gold Baton Troupe along with Clara Imus. The White and Gold Baton Troupe, composed of girls 7-12 years old, would be performing at the Ray C. Roberts Hall at Sixth & Anderson Sts. on June 8, 1939. Rainbow Girls Parade. State Convention. Costumed band aboard a mule drawn buckboard proceeds along streetcar tracks on Broadway at the corner of South 9th Street. Spectators are standing in the street watching the parade. The 13th annual Grand Assembly ran from July 12 through July 15, 1939, with nearly 1,200 girls in attendance.

New officers of the Maccabee Lodge. Group of men wearing suits with boutonnieres and women wearing long gowns with corsages posed in front of an elaborately decorated stage on January 24, 1940. The new tent and hive officers of the Knights and Ladies of Maccabees were installed that evening in public rites. Roy Devish and Ethel Koch are the respective leaders. Shriners of the Afifi temple. Floyd Kinnear, Robert P. Allen, W.H.Mierow, Walter Sutter, Clinton Hull, and E.M. Densmore are on the committee in charge of Tacoma's Temple's Golden Jubilee ceremony and ball. The 23rd Annual convention of the Northwest Loyal Order of Moose was held in Tacoma in July of 1938. Over 2500 members of 32 lodges from all parts of the Northwest, covering Alaska to the California border and east to Montana, descended on the Winthrop Hotel, convention headquarters. Over 1000 participated in the parade held on July 22nd, from its formation at 7th & Pacific to its conclusion at the Winthrop. Here women in white uniforms are pictured marching down a Tacoma street. Five of the oldest members of the Tacoma Elks Club gather to discuss the Good Old Days on Old Timers' night held in January of 1938. They are, left to right, S.J. Maxwell, member #2, whose career was in shipping; George L. Palmer, in the printing business and served once as Deputy Sheriff; S.A. Perkins, member #3, newspaper publishing; Major Charles O. Bates, law; and Calvin S. Heilig, member #1, theater owner in Tacoma and Portland. "Sam" Perkins served as master of ceremonies at the meeting where many memories were shared and enjoyed. (T. In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. The Grand Chapter of the State of Washington, Order of the Eastern Star, opened their "Victory Session" at Fellowship Hall in the Masonic Temple on June 18, 1942. The Grand Officers posed for a group portrait for the 59th annual meeting. Hanging above them are flags from many nations. Since America was at war then the flags shown are from some of their allies, including Great Britain and the USSR. Silhouettes of Presidents Washington and Lincoln flank the officials on stage. 1500 Eastern Star members attended the meeting. On December 14, 1942, members of the Daughters of the Nile Zora Temple No. 5 completed the last step of their year long service project. They were boxing up gifts at the home of Mrs. Warren Gilman for shipment to the Shriners Hospitals in Spokane and Salt Lake City. Clubwomen are, left to right, Victoria (Mrs. John) Ismay, Mrs. Katherine Neff, Avis (Mrs. Warren) Gilman, Mrs. Alexander White and Lou (Mrs. E.J.) Doherty. Exposure of Elks sponsored handball team. This Tacoma handball team competed in the Pacific Northwest AAU Championships in Spokane March 30-31, 1951. The team was sponsored by the Tacoma Elks Lodge, No. 174. Pictured on the front row, left to right, are George Baydo, Swan Johnson, and Bill Reel. The back row, left to right, is comprised of Pete Sabutis, Bill Faraone, Ernie Johnson, Jack Baty and Bob Holder. Faraone was the Tacoma city singles champion and he also held the doubles title with partner Ernie Johnson. Faraone, a Tacoma police officer, won the singles title in Spokane. Dr. Wilmot D. Read is wearing a traditional Scottish Rite cap in this studio portrait. Dr. Read was born in Iowa in 1880 and came to Tacoma in 1889. He attended grade and high school in Tacoma. He graduated from Cooper- Medical College (Stanford University) in 1903 and returned to Tacoma to begin his medical practice. In 1904 he served as assistant superintendent of Western State Hospital. In 1922 he organized Tacoma's first Public Health League. He was also a leader in the prepaid medical service field. Dr. Read served overseas with the Medical Corps during World War I. He was married to Kathryn Mae Read and had two sons, Dr. Jess W. Read, surgeon, and Dr. Robert D. Read, dentist, both of Tacoma. Dr. Read died April 1958 at age 78. Ordered by Scottish Rite.
