The goal of the Stocking Fillers project of the Tacoma Elks Club in 1948 was to insure that every child in Tacoma would be remembered on Christmas day. To help reach their goal, the Elks worked closely with Tacoma's 1,900 Girl Scouts. The scouts made sure that each of the 120 dolls that were given as gifts came with a full wardrobe of handmade clothes. Several men entertained thousands during the semi-annual benefit for the Tacoma Orthopedic and Day Nursery organizations with an 1952 election year spoof. The stage was decorated as a giant television set. Hollis Day, alias "Stevenson" is on the soapbox, while Din Fuhrmeister, alias "Eisenhower" (far left) awaits his turn. Ten women model evening dresses and suits in a style show that was a fund raiser for the Orthopedic Guild and the Tacoma Day Nursery. An immense crowd, nearly 4,000 people, turned out to find out that the rumors of a super-colossal, musical style parade with impersonations of presidential candidates were true. The men of Theta Chi fraternity pose on November 7, 1952, in their chapter room at the College of Puget Sound. Twenty five members are pictured with their fraternity crest which indicates the fraternity was first established nationally in 1856. Theta Chi's fall president was Norm Huber; his name, along with others, is listed in the 1953 Tamanawas yearbook. The fraternity had quite a successful year at C.P.S.; they placed first in the Homecoming Parade and also captured first place in the comic division of the Daffodil Parade. Academically, they were listed as first among Greek men. (1953 Tamanawas, p. 68-69)

Nineteen members of the Daughters of the Nile Zora Temple No. 5 gathered at the Masonic Temple in December, 1952. They were there to honor Mrs. Thomas Luke of Portland, Supreme Queen of the Supreme Temple, who was visiting temples and Shriner hospitals across the nation. Mrs. Luke is believed to be the woman in the dark evening gown with corsage. The Daughters of the Nile Zora Temple No. 5 are dressed in a variety of costumes ranging from Egyptian belly dancers to white "Russian" cossack-style outfits. (TNT 11-30-52, D-7)

A Great Dane extends a paw to hotel personnel as she accompanies Police Chief Jack Elich during the 1953 March of Dimes campaign. Diane Katherine O'Donnell, a pedigreed Great Dane, has a March of Dimes coin bank strapped to her side for donations. The coin banks are in the shape of miniature iron lungs. Diane is the official mascot of the Tacoma Police Department. The March of Dimes was an annual fundraiser by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to provide the means for polio research and treatment. The names of the couple were not listed. The Tacoma Central Labor Council was chartered by the A.F. of L. in 1907. It listed 100 affiliated organizations.

ca. 1953. Group of men, a branch of Freemasons. No background information is available on this group portrait. Regalia most closely resembles that of the Royal Arch Masons. However, the Scottish Rite would be honoring 11 members at the Masonic Temple during November of 1953. The event was the Ceremonial of Investiture for new Knight Commanders of the Court of Honor of the Scottish Rite. The ceremony was only held every second year. All 32nd degree Masons were invited to witness the ceremony. (TNT 11-29-1953, A-9)

In February of 1954 Frank Kellogg (seated at desk, center), the president of Tacoma Eagles Aerie 3 and the Eagles "Desperado" committee were planning their welcome for Eagles state president Ed Stanley. George Chihuly (far right) was promoting the idea of a full blown western style greeting - with pistols drawn. The state president was scheduled to visit Tacoma on February 26th to speak on "Eagledom and the rebirth of Fraternalism". Members participated in skits, played in the Elks orchestra, sang and danced under the direction of well known vaudevillian, Max Frolic. The beaming lass pictured is Lynn Green, the 1954 Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, Delta Phi Chapter. She has recently been selected over four other contestants to rule as Sweetheart at the Sigma Chi dance in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. Lynn Green from Redmond was a sophomore at the College of Puget Sound. She was working toward degrees in sociology and education. She belonged to the Chi Omega sorority and Spurs. (TNT 3/7/1954, pg. University students pose for group portrait. The Delta Delta Delta sorority from the College of Puget Sound honored all senior women on campus with a special tea. A Pansy Ring was created, using fresh flowers, and placed at the location of the tea. In 1954, the tea was held at the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club. The sixth annual rhododendron flower show sponsored by the Tacoma Chapter, American Rhododendron Society was expected to attract more than 6000 individuals during its two day run in the Bank of California lobby in May, 1954. There were more than one hundred varieties of rhododendrons on display, many in tall planters, along with azaleas and a waterfall in a natural woodland setting. The colors of the flowers ranged from scarlet to deep white, soft yellows and gentle pinks. Rhododendrons ranged in size from twelve feet high to mere inches off the ground. Local growers were proud to exhibit their prize specimens although it was decided this year that the show would be noncompetitive in nature. 9TNT 5-12-54, B-1, TNT 5-16-54, A-2)

An installation ceremony was held at the Masonic Temple in late January, 1953, for the Tacoma Assembly, Social Order of Beauceant. The sixteen women shown here in this sepia photograph are dressed in ankle length white gowns with large sleeves. They are all wearing small gold crosses and have large tilted black crosses placed on their shoulders. The Social Order of Beauceant is composed of the wives and widows of Sir Knights, of Ivanhoe Commandery (Knights Templar). The national order was founded in 1890 with the purpose of aiding the Knights Templar. (Clipping file, NWR)

Anderson who had been elected as the club's new exalted ruler. He is second to the left, next to his father Emmett T. Anderson (third from left) who was a past Grand Exalted Ruler and served as Lt. Governor of the State of Washington 1953-57. According to the News Tribune, Lt. Gov. Anderson was the installing officer, making it the first time in history that a national officer of the Elks had installed his son in the presiding position of a local organization. A large gathering of the Pierce County Practical Nurses Association met at the Woman's Club House on May 14, 1953. The Woman's Club House was located at 426 Broadway and was the former residence of Isaac Anderson; it had previously been occupied by the University Club. The practical nurses listened to a speech by Dr. Scott Jones. The superintendents of nurses for several hospitals, including Northern Pacific, Washington Minor, Pierce County, and Mountain View Sanatorium, and the president of the State Association of Practical Nurses were among the dignitaries present. The four Tacoma chapters of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution held a tea honoring local high school girls who were contestants in the Good Citizenship Pilgrimage. These high school students were chosen by their teachers for their dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. They would compete with others over the state in an examination paper which was judged by a board appointed by the state DAR regent. On March 13, 1952, Ted Hill (far left), representing the Citizen's Armed Forces Committee, accepted an armful of magazines and paperback books from George W. Cairns, chairman of the Moose's Lodge Boy Scout Committee. The scout master for Moose troop 435 and over twenty of the troop's members, most in uniform, watched from behind the third stack of magazines donated by the troop to the U.S. forces stationed in Korea. The servicemen were short of reading material, particularly men's magazines, comic books and paperbacks. Each fire station in Tacoma was accepting donations. (TNT, 3/23/1952, p.A-4)
