On October 30, 1941, people stride across the ground liberally scattered with papers at the military parade, composed mostly of the 3rd Infantry from Fort Lewis and their tanks and fire power.

On October 30, 1941, the men of the 3rd Infantry, a division of Fort Lewis, march down the street in mass formation, suggesting the tremendous military power of the US. The line of marching men was over 6 miles long.

Seventeen entrants pose in the Puyallup High School auditorium during the annual judging of queen contestants for the 1942 Daffodil Festival. For the first time, the contest was open to girls from different locales. After much deliberation from the news photographers serving as judges and finally a coin toss, seventeen year old Shirley Nieman, sixth from left, a senior at Puyallup High School was chosen as the Daffodil Queen. Her attendants were Beverly Belfoy of Stadium High, Tacoma, and Elaine Steele, Sumner High senior. At the request of the Army, there was no parade in 1942 but all other events were held March 20-22. Tacoma Real Estate Board float. Waving to the crowds, oars at rest, are members of the Tacoma Real Estate Board participating in the 27th Daffodil Parade on April 9, 1960. The float is passing North Coast Hotel and Eastern Electroplating at 14th & Pacific Avenue. The News Tribune called the float a "Catamaran on a Sea of Daffodils," as sixty thousand daffodils were used for decoration. Entitled "Happi Time," the entry won first prize in the Clubs and Organizations Division. The parade theme in 1960 was "Daffodils Salute Hawaii" in honor of the 50th state; Hawaii Lt. Gov. James K. The Tacoma Real Estate Board shared some "aloha" spirit with Tacoma during the 27th Daffodil Parade when their daffodil-bedecked float, "Happi Time," proceeded past the Greyhound station at 1319 Pacific Avenue on April 9, 1960. Eight young ladies, adorned with leis, waved to the crowd lined several deep on the sidewalk. The theme of the Daffodil Festival was "Daffodils Salute Hawaii;" this float used thousands of daffodils on the catamaran and boathouse to create a happy, tropical atmosphere. It was awarded first prize in the Clubs & Organizations Division. (TNT 4-10-60, B-8)

Even the clowns riding on a tandem bicycle stare in awe at the Insured Savings & Loan Assns. of Tacoma's "sand-and-palm tree" float #19 entered in the April 9, 1960, 27th Daffodil Parade. Five lovely ladies sit among the hundreds of daffodils and wave to the packed crowds lining up at 10th & Pacific Avenue. The float, "Hawaiian Wedding Song," won the Festival Award for depicting the best parade theme. The 48' float had a lush tropical setting which showed a wedding party with a tiki god at the rear watching over the proceedings. (TNT 4-9-60, p. 1)

Scenes from the 27th Daffodil Parade. Queen Diane Harkness, 17, of Lincoln High School and her attendants on the Tacoma City Light float, "Diamond Head," on April 9, 1960. 51,000 gold King Alfred and white Mt. Hood daffodils formed a replica of the famous Hawaiian landmark, Diamond Head, on the Queen's float which has traditionally been built by the Public Utilities department of the City of Tacoma. Queen Diane is seated on a majestic throne flanked by stately palms and four large orchid drum flowers. Six Daffodil princesses cluster around their queen wearing orchid leis and carrying daffodil bouquets. Royal Court, 1960 Daffodil Parade. Five Daffodil princesses sit on giant hibiscus blossoms amidst 25,000 daffodils and wave to the large crowds lining up on Pacific Avenue at the Greyhound station on April 9, 1960. The large star on the Puyallup community's float commemorates the entry of Hawaii as the 50th state. "Daffodils Salute Hawaii" had been chosen as the festival theme and the festival welcomed Hawaii's Lt. Gov. James K. Keahola as the parade's grand marshal. The Fife Trojan marching band and majorettes follow the royal court which consisted of Peggy Root of Puyallup, Sharon McCoy and Margaret Dudley of Sumner, Madeline Shouse of Orting and Martha Barringer from Stadium High School. The two-hour parade in Tacoma featured 31 floats, 28 bands, 30 drill teams, eight decorated cars, six mounted units and two drum & bugle corps. (TNT 4-9-60, p. 1, 4-10-60, B-8)

On April 6, 1942, the Army held its first wartime parade in downtown Tacoma. It was held on the anniversary of the US war declaration of World War I (4/6/1917). The parade included an whole infantry of soldiers, fully outfitted. They also demonstrated their current equipment, such as these light scout cars armed with automatic rifles. (T. On April 6, 1942, Tacoma was host to the first wartime parade through downtown Tacoma. It was held on the 25th anniversary of the U.S. war declaration of World War I (4/6/1917.) It also demonstrated the fitness and readiness of the Army and its equipment. The focus of the parade was a full regiment of infantry, completely equipped with steel helmets, packs and gas masks. In this photograph they are led by a military band and stretch out down the street as far as the eye can see. The Army Parade wound its way down Broadway and Pacific Ave. Missing were the usual photographers, news photographers were allowed to only take shots that were of no value to the enemy. (T. Marching proudly past the Greyhound station at 1319 Pacific Avenue are a 25-piece band and separate drill team during the 1961 Daffodil Parade. These young men may have been part of a local R.O.T.C. unit. Spectators by the thousands had lined the streets of downtown Tacoma to view the annual parade. The 28th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Parade featured 31 floats, 25 bands and 37 drill teams among other entrants. The gray, overcast skies and temperatures in the 50's did not seem to hamper either parade participants or watchers. (TNT 4-8-61, p. 1)

50 uniformed members of the Lincoln High School band strut their stuff accompanied by a drum major, baton twirler and cheerleaders during the 1961 Daffodil Parade. Spectators are thickly clustered on both sides of the 900 block of Pacific Avenue. Temperatures were in the chilly 50's but did not dampen the crowd's and participants' high spirits. The Queen's float, created by the Department of Public Utilities, was traditionally the first float in the parade and the 1961 Daffodil Parade was no exception. Accompanied by parade marshals, the Daffodil Queen, 17-year-old Carmel Mackin of Puyallup High School, and her six attendants wave gracefully to the spectators lined deep on Pacific Avenue. Sixty thousand daffodils were used on the float which included a spurting fountain. St. Regis Paper Co. float in 1962 Daffodil Parade. Four ladies in elegant evening gowns wave to the throngs gathered to watch the 29th annual Daffodil Parade as it slowly travels through the streets of downtown Tacoma. The St. Regis float, bedecked with 40,000 daffodils, is passing the 900 block of Pacific Avenue as this photograph was snapped. Entitled "Universe of Science," the float depicted the five science pavilion towers at the (Seattle) World's Fair, a large reflection pool and three live fountains. It was one of 30 floats that saluted the upcoming Century 21 Exposition and captured second place in the parade's commercial division. Photograph ordered by St. Regis Paper Co. Waving gracefully to the crowd are seven members of the Daffodil court on April 6, 1963. Wet weather on the 30th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil parade did not deter participants or crowds from gamely attending the event. These princesses are garbed in raingear draped over floor length ballroom gowns and carry small white parasols. Their princess float had broken down at the start of the parade, causing a delay of nearly an hour. It was decided that the princesses would walk the route; high heels and slippery streets would not prevent the determined young ladies from greeting parade spectators. They are nearing the end of the Tacoma portion of the parade as they march past the Greyhound station at 13th & Pacific. The strolling royalty were listed as Jane Mutschler, Karen Iverson, Nancy Vaughan, Karen Korsmo, Mary Ann Lambert, Loretta Huffman and Pam Burrell. (TNT 4-6-63, A-1, 4-7-63, B-9)

Perenniel participants in the annual Daffodil parades were the Pierce County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. They are photographed on April 6, 1963, during the 30th annual Daffodil parade as they pass by the Greyhound station on 13th & Pacific Avenue. The second rider in line lofts the department's flag in one hand. The Mounted Posse took second place in the mounted units division. 34 bands, 37 drill teams, 13 mounted units and 27 floats took part in the parade.

Float #19 with its carousel and miniature ferris wheel slowly proceeded through the wet streets of downtown Tacoma on April 6, 1963. Entitled "Moments of Make Believe," it was the Fife Boosters Club's entry in the 30th annual Daffodil Parade. The three princesses, Jane Durr on throne, Diane Reck and Janie Yamada standing, bore umbrellas and wore sheer raincoats to protect them against the rain. The eight children on the carnival rides also appeared equipped with rain gear. Depicting great moments in the lives of children, the Fife community's entry won first prize in Division 3, incorporated communities over 1500 population. (TNT 4-7-63, B-8)

Rain did not deter these youngsters from rushing to Float #28, a Dutch wonderland of daffodil fields, during the 30th annual Daffodil Festival on April 6, 1963. While the wet and chilly weather, unusual in the past few Daffodil parades, may have forced some spectators to huddle under canopies, other Tacomans stoically stood on the sidewalks to view the colorful spectacle of 27 floats, 34 marching bands, and 37 drill teams. Thousands would watch the parade in person, warmly dressed to ward off rain and cold, while thousands of others would view the procession in the comfort of their own homes via television. The object of their fascination is the non-competitive Queen's float bearing Puyallup High School senior Karen Goettling and four of her princesses: Janet Wendorf, Sandra Sutherland, Carol Samuelson and Shari Berntsen. The 46' float "Americana" was designed by Bill Knabel and decorated by 85 City Light employees and their families the night before the parade. Each year millions of daffodils would be used in celebration of the day. The Queen's float alone bore 44,000 yellow and 6,000 white daffodils. (TNT 4-12-64, A-1)

Parade watching is still a pleasant Tacoma pastime as these folks are gathered to view the 31st annual Daffodil Parade as it proceeds through downtown Tacoma. The American flag, positioned at the front of the above float, flaps briskly in the wind. The start of the parade saw temperatures of 42 degrees and blustery, cloudy weather. By noon, the clouds had parted and April sunshine had appeared. Several women and children are dressed in clothing of their native lands, including Philippines, Japan, Switzerland, and other European countries, in compliance with the parade's theme, "Nations on Parade." A large ball, probably signifying the Earth, is constructed from flowers and readily seen on a slight ramp.

The people sitting comfortably in the window of Sauro's Cleanerama, 1401-05 Pacific Ave., were spared the cold, blustery winds on this day in April of 1964, and had a good view of the 31st annual Daffodil Parade as it passed by. The young ladies on this particular float seem to be struggling to keep their parasols open and not blown off course. The theme of 1964's parade was "Nations on Parade," but floats like the above also saluted Washington State's 75th anniversary of statehood.

With cheerful waves, St. Regis Paper Co.'s entry in the 1964 Daffodil parade slowly passes through the downtown streets of Tacoma during the 31st annual event. Billowing tapestry and flowered canopies and fountains decorated this beautiful float. St. Regis, for the second year in a row, won the Sweepstakes Award. The float, "Kismet," with 70,000 daffodils on board, was built by company employees. It featured the harems of ancient India with a large dome, chiffon curtains, and stately attendants. A giant bird of peace is at the foreground of the Tacoma Vocational Technical Institute's entry in the 1964 Daffodil parade. "Peace Among Nations" is the float's motto. Three lovely ladies wave to the throngs watching the parade while two soldiers provide an escort. This was the 31st Daffodil parade. 33 floats using more than two million daffodils, 24 bands including two from Oregon, 17 marching units, and seven mounted units were televised live on KTNT-TV and viewed in person by thousands in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. The City of Wenatchee's entry into the 32nd Daffodil Parade was entitled "Apple Blossom Spectacular" and featured Apple Blossom Queen Barbara Erickson in velvet robes and her attendants, Kathleen Stockstill and Amy Radewan. On the flower bedecked float, glistening "apples" grew on curving "branches."

Three cowgirls wave to the crowds on both sides of Pacific Ave. near 11th St. while a fourth, seated before a giant garland-covered horseshoe, also acknowledges the appreciative throngs. The theme of the parade was "Masterpieces." It was televised live on two stations, KTNT and KIRO. Stock footage Daffodil Parade. The annual Daffodil Parade always drew entrants from out of the area and 1965 was no exception. The White Pass School Band traveled a fair distance to march in the 32nd annual parade. Accompanied by students carrying the school banner, majorette and drum major, the band marched proudly down Pacific Ave. on April 10, 1965. They were dressed in military styled dress uniforms with hats. White Pass was one of 20 bands participating in the parade; they joined the 29 floats, 14 drill teams, five drum & bugle corps and seven mounted units under breezy, mid-50 degree weather conditions. 1967 Daffodil Parade. The whimsical "Fun in Cartoons" entry from the Sumner community brought smiles to the spectators of the 1967 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Parade. Gallant Snoopy leads the way atop his little doghouse at the foreground of the pink-and-gold themed float with Bugs Bunny standing guard. The 43-foot float was decorated with 55,000 daffodils plus orchids, gladioli and carnations. (TNT 4-9-67, A-8)

1967 Daffodil Parade. Though the sun may have been lacking and the wind cold, people still poured out to fill the sidewalks and nearby office buildings for a view of the 1967 Puyallup Valley Daffodil parade as it meandered through the streets of downtown Tacoma. Among the many floats on April 8, 1967, was the Lakewood Unlimited entry entitled "Flight of Fancy." Swooping on butterfly wings were the four princesses of the Lakewood Summer Festival, Sally Fiss and Chris Hickson of Clover Park High School and Patsy Thompson and Ann Harris of Lakes High. The Lakewood float was one of 31 floats that had entered the parade. It was the first prize winner among unincorporated communities. (TNT 4-8-67, A-1, TNT 4-9-67, B-3)

1967 Daffodil Parade. The U.S. Navy Seabees celebrated their 25th anniversary with a magnificent float of golden daffodils entitled "Thailand Fantasy." In addition to the thousands of daffodils making up the body of the float, it was decorated with ornate golden symbols of the Far East. The 60-foot moving scroll on the 55-foot float depicts the aid being given by the Seabees to the people of Thailand. Winner of the President's Trophy, the Seabees float had previously won the Grand Marshal's Award in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. Float #3 was sponsored by the Associated General Contractors. (TNT 4-8-67, A-1)

1967 Daffodil Parade. The Orting community was represented in the 1967 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival with a splendid portrayal of Aladdin's Lamp. Float #9 passed through the thronged streets of downtown Tacoma while Aladdin, Mike Rudnick, posed stoically on his flying carpet and a harem of lovely ladies waved to the crowds. The 45-foot long float with 75,000 daffodils won the Queen's Award in the Commercial Division. Backs to the pageantry, clowns on both sides of Pacific Avenue did a brisk business selling bags of popcorn to hungry spectators. (TNT 4-8-67, A-1)
