1938 Stadium High School Baseball Team. 24 boys and Coach John Heinrick lined up on field in the Stadium Bowl. Baseball was entering its third year at Stadium, celebrated with new uniforms with a roaring Bengal face on the jersey and entry into the city league with Lincoln and Bellarmine.

College of Puget Sound graduation exercises. Graduates, proudly wearing their caps and gowns, march three across into Jones Hall. At the 51st commencement exercises held at CPS, 92 seniors and 7 post graduates would be receiving their diplomas. Two unidentified girls are making an elaborate decoration of fabric and paper for the Jason Lee's annual music festival. Jason Lee Junior High school (now Middle School) presented its annual musical festival on May 14, 1940. It was entitled "Say It With Music" and involved several hundred students. Boys and girls glee clubs, band, orchestra, and students from general music classes participated. The event included "Gypsy," Spanish and Mexican scenes. (T. Times 5-10-40, p. 20-article only)

Over one hundred dancers and musicians performed on May 14, 1940 at Jason Lee Junior High in the schools spring music festival. A series of Gypsy, Spanish and Mexican musical scenes were combined by Miss Kathryn Bruner, the Jason Lee music instructor, into a program titled "Say It with Music". Their library class was held in a display window of the Rhodes department store at 950 Broadway. In April of 1940, these patients of the Rust Memorial Ward and the Tacoma Orthopedic Clinic were able to learn their 3 R's despite being at the Tacoma General Hospital, thanks to a compact school room furnished by the Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The newly decorated room held regular classes five days a week for children with physical disabilities. Some of the children, under the supervision of the Orthopedic Clinic, were transported from their homes daily for school sessions. The schoolwork was done under the direction of Mrs. Meredith Duguay, whose services were provided by the Tacoma School District. Pets of all kinds were on display at the annual Spanaway School pet show held on Wednesday May 15, 1940. The unidentified little girl at the far left, standing next to a very young Uncle Sam, is holding a dog dressed in a shirt with a frilly collar and overalls. The girl at the right holds a bicycle decorated with crepe paper streamers. Spanaway Elementary School was built in 1927 at 15600 East B Street. It was torn down shortly after the Chester H. With much excitement and enthusiasm, Spanaway school children held a pet parade and marched down local roads in May of 1940. It was an opportunity to dress in costumes and show-off their favorite pets. Some of the children rode decorated bicycles and toy automobiles; one child (second from the left). whose head-mask is off, dressed as a spotted dog with long ears .

In March of 1940, Stadium High School presented their 28th annual opera "Desert Song." The 200 students in the cast rehearsed three months to perform the light opera March 28-30. The lead was played by Donna Mae Jaden, who later achieved fame as musical and film star Janis Paige. School buses and children in front of DuPont School. A school was originally built at this site in 1911, on property donated by the DuPont Co. It was increased in size in 1938 and 1941 and modernized. As schools were constructed at Fort Lewis, all elementary students from DuPont attended school on base and this building became the junior high, and then the high school. It was named Laughbon High after the school superintendent. The school closed in 1975. Weyerhaeuser bought the grounds and demolished the school. (A History of Pierce County, Vol. 1)

Young men from the College of Puget Sound razz a fellow classmate during the first annual C.P.S. picnic held on April 28, 1938. Classes were dismissed early and students poured out on to the grounds to enjoy the annual freshman vs. sophomore tug-of-war, as well as two hours of games. Following a luncheon served by SPURS, the women's service organization, there was a mass community sing and two hours of dancing. (T. Times 4/29/1938, p. 1).

A ground breaking ceremony for new women's dormitory at the College of Puget Sound was held on February 16, 1938. A large crowd of students and reporters gather in the open field in anticipation of the event. One year later in February of 1939, Anderson Hall was dedicated. (T.Times, 2/16/1938, p. 1)

ca. 1937. Stadium High School Girls' Marching Unit, the Tigerannas, ca. 1937. The Tigerannas were formed in 1937 to march with the Stadium Band, providing a little extra color to performances. They were the brainchild of R.C. Fussell, Stadium Instrumental director. The 45 girls were photographed standing in wing formation. Their uniforms are short, shiny dresses in blue and gold with matching Cossack boots and pillbox style hats. (T.Times 10/15/1937, pg. 8) (WSHS)

The Gault "Nonettes" were one of the vocal ensembles that performed at the Gault Junior High School annual spring music festival held on May 7, 1941. The girls in the "Nonettes were, beginning at the top row and working down: (l to r) Agnes Valor, Bernice Hassler and Virginia Meyer; second row (l to r) Bonita Olson and Bonnie Sheerin; third row (l to r) Violet Powers and Vedajean McCoy; bottom row (l to r) Leola Webster and Iris DeRocher. By July of 1941, real progress was finally being made on the new athletic amphitheater being built to the northwest of Lincoln High School, some ten years after civic groups on the south end of Tacoma started campaigning for a bowl to rival the Stadium Bowl next to Stadium H.S. It was expected that the field would be completed by September of 1941, for the beginning of the school year, but WWII stopped most work on the Lincoln Bowl, and after the war funds for further construction were hard to find. The new sports stadium was finally dedicated on Friday evening September 24, 1948 over seven years after construction began. (T. Times 7/3/1941 p.7)
