A special group of 30 Tacoma revelers, led by Art Rowe and Milt Evans, including a seven piece band, traveled to towns throughout Puget Sound region in July of 1939 to issue personal invitations to the towns' residents to attend the Washington State Golden Jubilee festivities in Tacoma. Special constable Robert Dykeman threatened to arrest the boisterous group when they parked their specially painted bus in a posted "no parking" area on Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma. In each town, they paraded through the streets and handed out flyers. The group's most memorable stop was in Seattle where they "snake danced" through downtown traffic led by the diminutive Mr. Dykeman. TPL-1372 (T. Times 7/12/1939, pg. 7)

Val Fawcett, Ira Davisson, Holmes Eastwood and Norton Clapp. The Gyro Club was promoting the wearing of hats during the celebration honoring Washington's 50 years of statehood. Club members are shown wearing a variety of styles including top hats, 10-gallon hats, low crown derbies. Many prominent city, county and civic leaders were included in the group. Clapp was the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce president, Fawcett, Eastwood and Davisson were City Commissioners, and Cain (soon to be elected the next mayor) was the Jubilee Chairman. This horse drawn buggy emphasizes the frivolity of the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. Instead of being pulled by a horse, the buggy is hitched up to two people in a mule costume. The driver calmly observes the crowd shading himself with his parasol, leg dangling over the side of the conveyance. He is accompanied by two boys, one of whom is looking over the back at the following drill team. The flag bearer for the drill team marches beside the buggy.

This horse drawn wagon draped at the sides with evergreen boughs was entered in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the Defiance Lumber Co. The men on the platform are involved in some pioneer wood cutting techniques. In the center, one man hacks at the log with an axe, while another man sits atop cutting with a saw. A motorcycle with a side car rides along the side of the wagon. Defiance Lumber was located at 4601 Ruston Way . Lee L. Doud was president.

Fisher's Flouring Mills, maker of Fisher Blend Flour, contributed this delectable layered float featuring a three layer anniversary cake, complete with candles, for Washington State's fifty years of "progress," 1889-1939. Several young women in long white dresses with puffed sleeves ride on the float. Fisher Flouring Mills Co. was located at 1153 Dock St.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. This decorated truck is the parade entry from Adams County. This county in southeastern Washington was established by the Territorial Legislature on November 28, 1883, from a portion of Whitman County. Wheat, cattle, and sheep are the major products of the county's 1,895 square miles. It was named for John Adams, first vice president of the United States and the second president. The truck pulls a wagon bearing a model of a farm. A girl in a white or pastel spring dress is perched on the hood, holding a parasol.

This float celebrating the Narrows Bridge, under construction at this time, was prepared for the Washington Golden Jubilee Parade, July 22, 1939, by Pierce County. Model of bridge, driver in 10 gallon hat, man in Native garb and headdress smoking a "peace pipe" and woman in swimwear. Spectators watch from curb and from windows of Luzon and Baker Buildings at 13th and Pacific. Thousands of Tacomans lined the street and buildings of downtown Tacoma to view the three-hour parade. The Construction Council of Tacoma entered this float in the Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939. The float bears a model of what is possibly the Exposition Hall, 1616-32 E. 26th, opened in 1940. The wording over the door of the model says simply "Washington." The driver's head and steering wheel can be seen directly in front of the model. The parade was celebrating fifty years of Washington statehood. Several people can be seen in the crowd wearing their "Jubilee Hats."

Twenty of the counties in Washington State entered a float in the Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, held in Tacoma. This one was entered by Chelan County. It is a giant foil covered heart mounted on an oval float. Around the sides of the float are placards with the cities in Chelan county listed. (T. Times 7/24/1939, pg. 3)

Golden Jubilee Parade, Tacoma City Light float, on July 22, 1939. The theme of the City Light float was Arabian Nights. The float featured a gilded youth as Aladdin, an electric lamp, and four maidens in huge jars. Spectators stand several rows deep to watch the parade. (TNT 7-23-39, p. 1) TPL-5198

Shaub-Ellison Co., dealers for Goodyear tires, entered this float in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. The parade was celebrating the fifty year anniversary of Washington's statehood. A little girl rides in front holding an oar in one hand and waving with the other. In the back is a large Goodyear tire with a child riding inside. Shaub-Ellison was located at 1902 Pacific Ave. In 1939, the company was owned by Roe E. Shaub and Charles Ellison Jr.

A part of Tacoma's and our nation's past came rolling down Pacific Avenue on July 22, 1939, during the Golden Jubilee Parade. A man and woman dressed in vintage clothing drive a 1906 Model "N" Ford owned by Titus Ford. There is barely enough room for two. A sign on the Ford's roof reads, "50 Year Club." The driver of the car is Dick Frayne, superintendent of Titus Ford Service Department.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. Griffin Fuel Co., founded in 1889 by Fred Griffin, participates with a horse drawn wagon decked with a flag and bunting. The wagon also has a sign stating "There's no fuel like an old fuel." The company located at 1910-30 Commerce was also celebrating their fifty year anniversary in the fuel business.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. The frontiersman aims for a shot as the photographer takes a shot of the R.E. Anderson Co. float queued up, waiting for the parade to start. The float salutes Washington state as the "Evergreen Playground." R.E. Anderson was a real estate company that also dealt in loans, rentals, insurance and bonds. In 1939, they were located on the 4th floor of the Fidelity Building, 949-55 Broadway. The building was razed in 1949.

Western wear is the dress code of the day in the County Assessor's office on July 18, 1939. The public servants are helping Washington celebrate her 50th anniversary of statehood. Tacoma would be celebrating the state's Golden Jubilee from July 16-23, 1939. The Gyro Club had declared wearing "Jubilee Hats" as the way to show support.

Real estate developer Norton Clapp towers over County Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Louise S. Taylor as the two shake hands and show off their Jubilee Hats in July of 1939. Both are members of the Gyro Club which declared the wearin' of hats to be the best way to boost the city's Golden Jubilee celebration, July 16-23, 1939. 20,000 hats of all styles, shapes and colors would flood the city so that everybody had a chance to buy one, for as low as 60 cents. The club had announced plans to put old-fashioned police wagons on the streets on July 18th to spot anyone not wearing a hat and suitable "punishment" would ensue. The local Gyro Club had many prominent members including C. Val Fawcett, Harry P. Cain, W.P. Bonney and Sheriff John Bjorklund. Allen - Brewster wedding. Lilly Catherine Allen and Benjamin J. Brewster were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Allen, on October 7, 1939. The new Mrs. Brewster is pictured above in her gown of white satin and fingertip veil. She wore a large corsage of gardenias and roses. White and yellow 'mums and blue Michaelmas daisies provided an attractive setting for the wedding which was officiated by Rev. L. Edgar Taber and attended by close friends and relatives. The groom, Benjamin Brewster, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brewster. Both bride and groom graduated from Lincoln High School. The Sonya Mae Apartments was the couple's first home. 1940 Daffodil Parade. The Sweepstakes winner in the 7th annual Daffodil Parade was entered by the Tacoma Labor Council. A huge floral bell tolled in the center of the float, topped by doves representing peace. The float is pictured parading through Sumner. Heads of drivers can be seen among flowers on float on which four young girls are riding. Sumner floral sign and house in background. Over 26 floats were entered in the 1940 parade. (T. Japanese American representation at the Narrows Bridge/McChord Field Parade. On June 29, 1940 Tacoma began six days of events to celebrate the openings of both the 1st Tacoma Narrows Bridge and McChord Field, and the 4th of July. The events on July 1, 1940, included the official ribbon cutting ceremony at the bridge and a grand parade. The Japanese communities of Tacoma and Seattle were represented by a float which was preceded by a score or more of marching Japanese young women. Each of the marchers was attired in a Japanese kimono, and each carried a brightly colored, bell covered wand. Marching ahead of the women were the drum & bugle corps of the First Hill district, Seattle Boy Scouts (not pictured.) 1940 Daffodil Parade; Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau float. Two young women on garden design float. 60-75,000 spectators turned out to view the 1940 parade. They were rewarded by a parade that was just under an hour long, with 26 floats, bands and marching drill teams. (T. Times)
