Refinishing blackboards at Horace Mann School, Jan. 15, 1948. Jack Spence is seen demonstrating a specialized piece of equipment used to clean the surface of classroom blackboards. The machine rotates a disk against the blackboard and collects the dust by use of a vacuum. The blackboard is actually resurfaced, being ground below the level of any nicks that have been made in the sometimes 50 year old blackboards. In February of 1948, the alumni reunion planning committee sipped coffee as they discussed the upcoming annual Pacific Lutheran College reunion scheduled for February 7-8th at the Parkland campus. Pictured graduates were, L-R, Lorene Wilson, Marjorie Wentworth, Stella Jacobs, Alice Ford and Wilma Schmitz. Activities for the two-day get-together included a smorgasbord banquet, a basketball game between the PLC reserves and the Alumni All-Stars, and a mixer featuring home movies of the Alumni's college days. Pacific Lutheran College had built three new facilities during 1947: a three-story student union building, a gymnasium and a science hall. Pacific Lutheran College's library was designed in 1936, building began in 1937 and the building was dedicated in 1939. This building was designed by Emanuel J. Bresemann, a local Tacoma architect. Pacific Lutheran was planning to remodel the library during 1948, view of PLC students outside of the library, possibly between their classes or on their way to study (Saga, 1948).

College of Puget Sound. Three male college students, members of the Intercollegiate Knight National Service Fraternity, are cleaning an attic. One of them is dismanteling what looks like a bed frame, and the other two are mopping the floor. Old furniture, roll-up blinds and other items are still piled up around them. The walls are finished in wooden planks. This group participated in the year-round activities of the college and undertook two major spring projects: remodeling the out-dated bulletin boards at Jones Hall and the procurement of a chapter room. Pacific Lutheran College was a member of the American Association of Colleges, and was an accredited educational facility. Dr. Eastvold was PLC's President, in addition to the new gymnasium Pacific Lutheran College had also built a new $200,000 Science Hall in 1947. Bellarmine. Bellarmine Seminary and St. Leo's High School jointly presented the operetta, "In Old St.Louis" April 8th, 10th and 11th, 1948, at St. Leo's auditorium. The large chorus included hunters, pirates, townspeople, blackface players and frontiersmen. The chorus' names were listed. (T.Times, 4/2/1948, p.16; 4/3/1948, p.8))

Peter J. Bardon, the head of the Music Department of Clover Park High School, 11023 Gravelley Lake Drive S.W., conducts the school's Small Choir in March of 1948. The school's all girl group, the Nonettes, and approximately twenty selected boy's voices were combined to make up this mellow sounding, mixed group. The members of the Small Choir wore school sweaters; they did not wear choir robes until the 1950-51 school year. TPL-8796

CPS. Students at the College of Puget Sound are determined to win the many valuable awards in the Tacoma T-Man contest. One young man is wearing a gas mask. Two hold rifles and the last one holds a revolver in his hand and a pipe in his teeth. They have scoured the campus in hopes of locating the elusive subject. The 7th jingle clue was, "For he is sound as sound can be, A saint in two he is, not three. All will vouch and praise his name, and then go on to win the game". "T-Men", an Edward Small production released by Eagle Lion Films, was opening at the Rialto Theater. The film starred Dennis O'Keefe and was based on a compilation of three actual cases of US Treasury Department agents going under cover to track down a counterfeiting ring. R. Franklin Thompson, President of College of Puget Sound, is wearing a baseball mitt and standing on the C.P.S. baseball field. Thompson had a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), he had been the President at C.P.S. for many years. President Thompson liked to get involved in many of the College activities (Tamanawas, 1947).

Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. Pacific Lutheran College was first known as Pacific Lutheran Academy between 1898 and 1919, in 1920 they changed Academy to College. In 1944 PLC officially stated they intended to build a new gymnasium, but building was delayed until the end of World War II. Gault School children for Red Cross. Students of Gault Junior High School are placing hand-made Christmas items in a large display case. The gifts and decorations were made by all schools throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. The American Junior Red Cross was a separate section of the American Red Cross. They were important in supporting programs for children in need. The school, opened February 1, 1926, was named after Dr. Franklin B. Gault, Superintendent of Tacoma Schools from 1888 - 1892.
