Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. Pacific Lutheran College was first known as Pacific Lutheran Academy between 1898 and 1919, in 1920 they changed Academy to College. In 1944 PLC officially stated they intended to build a new gymnasium, but building was delayed until the end of World War II. Over 16,000 rabid football fans left their turkey dinners on November 28, 1946 to attend the 25th Annual Stadium-Lincoln Thanksgiving Day game. The Stadium Tigers won 21 - 6, giving the Tigers an undefeated season, and winning for them both the Cross-State and City League Championships. (T.Times, 11/29/46, p.1; 11/30/1946, p.2)

Gault School children for Red Cross. Students of Gault Junior High School are placing hand-made Christmas items in a large display case. The gifts and decorations were made by all schools throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. The American Junior Red Cross was a separate section of the American Red Cross. They were important in supporting programs for children in need. The school, opened February 1, 1926, was named after Dr. Franklin B. Gault, Superintendent of Tacoma Schools from 1888 - 1892. Lincoln High School's stadium, better known as Lincoln Bowl, took seven years to build. The building of the much needed athletic field began in March 1941 but the U.S. involvement in World War II limited the supplies and the workers and delayed the completion of this project. Construction was halted for more than six years. In 1947 building resumed and the bowl was completed in September 1948. TPL-8383

In September of 1942, five members of the Lincoln Abes varsity eleven pose in the the unfinished Lincoln Bowl prior to their opening prep grid game against Stadium High School. After the game on September 18th, the team was all smiles. They battled the Tigers to a scoreless tie, their first non loss in the annual game since 1931. Pictured are, standing left to right, Ed Bemis, LeRoy Turnbull and an unidentified player. Kneeling, Ingwald Thompson and Gordon Brunswick. Stadium High School football coach Johnny Heinrick had 60 boys turn out to fill 11 varsity positions in September of 1942. Coach Heinrick was optimistic, despite having lost all but 4 of his 1941 letterman to graduation and enlistment. His players in general would be a year younger and 7-8 pounds lighter than the previous year.The team would face their arch rival, the Lincoln Abes, in the September 18, 1942 "King's X" game, held this year at 3:30p.m. in the afternoon due to mandatory dim outs. College of Puget Sound 1951 graduating class. 285 graduates received degrees June 3, 1951, during the ceremony in the field house. Dr. R. Franklin Thompson, president of the college conferred the degrees. Dr. Robert E. Burns spoke to the granduates on "World Unity, But How?". The 1951 graduation class from Tacoma-Vocational Technical school. The apprentices, who studied courses ranging from bookbinding to sign painting, were awarded certificates indicating they had completed a course in their particular field. Lincoln High School fielded a large football team in 1951. Coached by Norm Mayer and led by right tackle and captain, Frank Paige, the Abes were runner-ups in the 9th annual Grid-Go-Round held in September, 1951. The Stadium Tigers defended their title when they defeated Lincoln 6-0. Although the varsity only won three games during the season, the highlight probably came as they tied the perenniel powerhouse Stadium team 6-6 on a foggy Thanksgiving day. According to the Lincolnian yearbook, post-season honors were awarded to Frank Paige as all-city tackle and Warren Billingsley, guard, first team all Cross-State. In February of 1952 Franklin School at 3202 South 12th Street was full to over flowing as the post war "baby boom" generation filled Tacoma's schools. Tacoma found a temporary solution to its student space problem by building temporary classrooms, the first of which were built at Franklin in the summer of 1949. In an appeal to voters in 1952 to vote "Yes" on school propositions, it was announced that 50 portables were in operation in Tacoma. A new permanent addition was completed at Franklin School in 1953; by then it had an enrollment of some 800 children. A completely new Franklin School opened in 1998. (For the Record, Winnifred L. Pacific Lutheran College was proud of the new combination chapel/music/speech building that would be the religious and cultural center of the campus. At a cost of $625,000, it contained a 1,238 seat auditorium, music facilities, and a radio studio. A small devotional chapel, seating 75 people, was on the third floor.
