Lord Halifax, British Ambassador to the United States received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the College of Puget Sound (now UPS) on July 22, 1943. The degree was conferred by fellow Oxford alumnus and president of the college, Dr. R. Franklin Thompson (L) . Participating in the ceremony were Dean John D. Regester (R) and State Supreme Court Justice William J. Millard who is attaching the academic hood. Lord Halifax had a Doctorate in Science from the University of Glasgow and a Master of Arts from Cambridge. He had tutored and lectured at Cambridge before becoming a member of Parliament. Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, the 3rd Viscount of Halifax, was the British ambassador to the United States from 1940-1946. He was created an earl in 1944. His many offices and honors included viceroy of India, Knight of the Order of the Garter,privy councillor, secretary of war and foreign secretary. (T.Times, 6-30-43, p. 18, T. Members of the advanced choral reading group at the College of Puget Sound presented "An Evening of Poetry" on February 23, 1945 at Jones Hall. Highlights of the varied program included a stirring word picture of an Atlantic sea wind, the adventures of prowling witches and leering goblins on a mystic night, and the battling love life of the "Gingham Dog and Calico Cat". General Jonathan M. Wainwright was awarded an honorary degree of doctor of military science at the College of Puget Sound on November 20, 1945. R. Franklin Thompson (left), president of the college, made the presentation to General Wainwright. Edward H. Todd (right), president emeritus, pronounced the benediction at the ceremony. College of Puget Sound Spurs. Fifteen members of the Spurs are wearing their uniforms, white skirts, white blouses and sweaters with the Spurs emblem. The Spurs is a college women's national honorary organization. Members are elected during the spring term of their freshman year by fellow students and initiated into Spurs during fall term of their sophomore year. They are chosen based on personality, scholarship, leadership and activity in college affairs and comprise one of the main women's service organizations on the campus. College of Puget Sound was holding a ground breaking ceremony for a new men's dormitory. The new dorms would be located on the south side of Jones Hall and will house 122 students. Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

The Workshop Band, organized and directed by Leroy Ostransky, is one of the newest additions to College of Puget Sound's extracurricular organizations. Baby Kathleen Ann McKenty celebrated both St. Patrick's Day and her first birthday in March 1947. Her parents brought her over to a stone found behind the College of Puget Sound women's dormitory in order to teach her about the "Blarney Stone" of Blarney Castle, located near Cork, Ireland. Her parents hoped to bring Kathleen to the real Blarney Stone someday - which is supposed to confer the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney) to all who kiss it. Kathleen is the granddaughter of Harry Sprinker, who would hold the office of Pierce County Commissioner for 20 years. She did not get to visit Ireland with her parents as they both died when she was young. Kathleen would go on to marry John Hartman and presently resides in Snohomish. Nearly 60 years after this photograph was taken, the Hartmans are planning their first trip to Ireland in 2007. (T. Times, 3/17/47, p. 1; additional information provided by a reader).

R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."
