Rose Marie Murphy and Bruce Courtney Dennis were married November 30, 1952, at the Gail Pauline Day Memorial Chapel at the College of Puget Sound. Rose Marie and Bruce are surrounded by members of their families. Rose Marie was the daughter of Kenneth and Rosa Murphy. There would be 163 candidates for degrees at C.P.S.'s 67th Commencement held on June 5, 1955. Governor Langlie's topic would be "Putting Meaning into Life." Cheerleading camp. About 90 cheerleaders gathered at the University of Puget Sound in mid-July of 1969 for several days of cheerleading camp. Wearing their respective school cheer outfits, the junior high and high school pepsters hailing from Washington and Idaho posed in front of the university's music building. New science complex at the University of Puget Sound. After more than two years of construction, the new science building, named in honor of longtime U.P.S. president R. Franklin Thompson, was dedicated in April, 1968. The $4,000,000 science complex was the largest building project in the school's (then) 80-year history. It was designed by Nelson, Karona & Zeigler, architects, and built by McDonald Bldg. Co. View of U-shaped, three story Thompson Hall facing Union Ave., shows off the Tudor-Gothic brick architecture. A circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, lay in the middle of the complex. The fountain would become the scene in the coming years of much illicit wading, dunkings and pranks. Jones Hall, framed by a brick archway, on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. This view of the main building on the north end school was taken on December 27, 1929. Designed by the architectural firm of Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, it was the first building completed on the new campus of the College of Puget Sound in 1924. Funding for the stately brick building was provided by Mrs. Charles H. Jones who gifted the college $200,000 on her 78th birthday. The hall is named after her late husband, a prominent lumberman. May Day celebrations at the College of Puget Sound. Jones Hall was the site of the annual May Festival, 1931 honoring the mothers of College of Puget Sound students. May Day Queen Lillian Boyd is pictured at center accompanied by Fred LePenske. Harry Brown and Julius Coplan were heralds announcing the arrival of the queen. Carrying bouquets of flowers were the queen's attendants Alice Berry and Bonita Reeder. Three small children, (L-R) Ralph Lemon, Yvonne Battin and Jimmy Davis, were added to delight the crowd. Forms are in place for the pouring of concrete at the construction site for the new C.H. Jones Hall at the College of Puget Sound. Groundbreaking for the new campus at N. 15th & Warner St. had occurred on May 22, 1923, and Jones Hall was to be the first of many major campus buildings. The administration building, Jones Hall, is named after Tacoma lumberman Charles H. Jones whose widow gifted the school $200,000 on the day of its groundbreaking. The Jones family had previously donated $50,000 to the school just the year before. Sutton, Whitney & Dugan designed the college campus and J.E. Bonnell & Son were the contractors. College of Puget Sound summer band camp group posed on the campus. For the first time, the music department of CPS would be offering a program combining music study with vacation and recreation. The camp would be open to high school students receiving a superior rating in solo and ensemble playing, who exhibit scholarship and good character. The students would live at the college and be given a private lesson each week as well as instruction in harmony and arranging. In addition, the group would perform several concerts throughout the summer. Sixty five students participated in the first month long camp. (T. Former State Senator and College of Puget Sound history professor Walter Davis, for alumni magazine. Hat in hand, Sen. Davis poses on the brick steps leading to Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. He represented the people of the 27th District in the State Legislature for eight consecutive terms from 1913-1929. All the while he remained a college professor, having come to CPS in 1907 to teach history and political science. He was a member of the Board of Curators of the Historical Society since 1914, a member of the Tacoma Park Board from 1927-32 and a director of Central Bank since the bank's founding. Sen. The Tamanawas group was in charge of publishing the annual yearbook, they selected photos that represented the school years activities, as well as included general student body photos. College of Puget Sound Spurs. Fifteen members of the Spurs are wearing their uniforms, white skirts, white blouses and sweaters with the Spurs emblem. The Spurs is a college women's national honorary organization. Members are elected during the spring term of their freshman year by fellow students and initiated into Spurs during fall term of their sophomore year. They are chosen based on personality, scholarship, leadership and activity in college affairs and comprise one of the main women's service organizations on the campus. College of Puget Sound's Campus Playcrafters performed Thorton Wilder's "Skin of Our Teeth" as their spring production. The play depicts man's survival through the ice age, deluge and war.
