The Ladies' Musical Club sponsored a concert by Hildegarde, a New York supper club singer who was on a concert tour across the continent, at Temple Theater. She would perform a 2 1/2 hour concert with her 12-piece orchestra. Her program included not the classics but favorites such as, "The Last Time I Saw Paris". She traveled with 35 evening costumes packed in specially built 6-foot trunks but would only be wearing two for her Tacoma appearance. She is seen here looking from the window of her room at the Hotel Winthrop. Tacoma's City Hall can be seen through the window. (TNT, 4/18/1951, p.12)

Chairman and officers of the Capital District, Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs, in the Daffodil Room at the Hotel Winthrop. A group of seventeen women from the various local garden clubs have gathered for a lunch meeting prior to the opening of the second annual Christmas show by the group, "Twas the Week Before Christmas", held at the Hotel Winthrop. Funds generated from the show were to be used to establish a garden center building fund. More than 85 garden clubs from the district responded with exhibits to the show. All born on March 28, 1949, these six babies celebrated their one year birthday in the Daffodil Room of the Winthrop Hotel, which had its grand opening on the day they were born. Thirteen babies in Tacoma, 9 girls and 4 boys, were born on the same day as the popular restaurant, named for the Puyallup Valley's bright yellow spring flowers. In recognition of this fact, the babies and their parents were invited to be birthday guests of the restaurant. They were also presented with silver piggybanks engraved with their names. Hotel Winthrop was inviting all of Tacoma to join them in the grand opening celebration for the new Trader Vic's Sabre Room. Trader Vic is an internationally known restaurateur, and he has now brought his world famous menu items to Tacoma. The interior of the Sabre Room is modeled after an authentic old English tap room, with figured red carpet, copper bowl lamps, the walls give the impression of aged plaster in a driftwood color. Trader Vic and his wife will host the grand opening celebration.

Tacoma's Comus Club was hosting their first dance of the year at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. The "Switzers" would wear green hats with feathers and greet their guests for the "Alpine Wonderland" dance. The ballroom and buffet table would be decorated with the Swiss Alps, skiers, a lighted medieval castle and other winter Alpine decorations. Tacoma's eight Zone Air Raid Wardens met at the Hotel Winthrop to receive posters and other materials for the national V-Home campaign, scheduled to start Monday. V-Home stood for Victory Home, and it was a civil defense program targeted at teaching citizens to defend themselves in case of enemy attack. They were also expected to conserve, ration, buy war bonds and save salvage. The Zone wardens coordinated the effort of the precincts and block Air Raid Wardens. They are, left to right, R.J. Carino with printed air raid instructions, Paul Garver with a V-Home poster, C.W. Sangster, Tom Miller, Handel Ingham, Russell Longworth and James Crawford. A peplum with a longer back is also featured. The model wears a broad-brimmed, straw hat and carries a purse and cloves to match her platform shoes. Boat show at Hotel Winthrop. The first major Tacoma Boat Show in several years was held the week of August 17-22, 1948 in the lobby of the Hotel Winthrop. Western Boatbuilding displayed their Torpedo Flyer speed boat, and Pleasurecraft brought a fully rigged sailing dingy with a 19-foot mast. There were several models of boats on display including a cabin cruser built by Western Boat along with Chinese sampans and junks.
