ca. 1926. Lesson in Friendship by Tacoma Knights of Pythias at the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. The fraternal order was founded in 1864 by Justus H. Rathbone on the principles of friendship, charity and benevolence, or "FCB" the letters inscribed on the triangles that make up the group's emblem. Members of the Western Retail Lumbermens' Association pose in February of 1927 in front of a little bungalow erected on the roof of the Winthrop Hotel in honor of the group's annual convention. The bungalow was made entirely of local wood and demonstrated its use in construction. When the 24th annual convention concluded February 26, 1927, new leaders had been elected for the coming year. On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times Spring Fashion section hit the newstands, featuring two couples modeling the latest in suits and coats from Klopfenstein's, Inc. Gathered around the piano at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit and Irene Tollefson, also in Rothmoor. International flavor Military Reserve Officers Ball, sponsored by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association February 18, 1939 at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. Army, Navy and Marine officers from Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and nearby cities, as well as officers of the famed Seaforth Highlanders of British Columbia, dance with their partners under row of flags representing the two countries and their various regiments. Reserve Officers International Military Ball held February 18, 1939 at the Hotel Winthrop's Crystal Ballroom. Major Harold E. Snider, of Vancouver, B.C., dressed in kilts, and wife as well as Mrs. Nelson Lynde and Colonel A. W. November, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance at the Hotel Winthrop. Merritt Nelson, Florence McLean, Betty Noble, and Weymar Rosso converse during intermission. The Crystal Ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop was the site of the November 25, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance. One couple sitting on edge of table catch-up on events with another couple who is just arriving. Streamline formals seem to have been popular that year as well as marcelled hairdos. (T. A Washington State Patrol officer knocks on the door of room 305 at the Winthrop Hotel where officers questioned Frank Olson who had confessed to the Mattson kidnapping. Olson, also known as Lester Mead and Charles Thorp, had walked away from the Medical Lake Asylum and fabricated his part in the crime. He was found to be harmless and returned to the Asylum. The state officers were accused by the Tacoma Times of blowing up the entire incident with poor investigative technique. To make matters worse, the Times claimed that special editions were released by the Tacoma News Tribune and a Seattle morning paper proclaiming that the crime had been solved. (T.
