ca. 1952. Installation of officers, White Shrine of Jerusalem, for Mrs. A.B. Burnett. The White Shrine is a Christian auxiliary of the Freemasons. It is open to men who have achieved the rank of Master Mason and women related to Master Masons who profess "Belief in the defense of the Christian religion." It was organized in 1894 in Chicago by Charles Magee, a Freemason. Members must be adults, white and non-Jewish. Prior to 1953, members also had to belong to the Order of the Eastern Star.

ca. 1952. Three drum and bugle corps from area American Legion Posts pose in humorous costumes for this picture taken on the 700 block of Broadway in downtown Tacoma. Represented are the Auburn Post No.78, Seattle's University Post No. 11 and West Seattle's Post #160. The American Legion held its 1952 state convention in Tacoma in August. The convention was highlighted by two downtown parades. The Voyageurs of La Societie des Forty Hommes et Eight Chevaux (40 et 8) staged their "Goof" parade from So. 7th and Pacific Ave, to Jefferson, to Broadway and back to the Elks Temple. More than 22 units participated. The costumes range from cross dressing, to dressing like children, to a couple of men dressed like babies in diapers and bibs. The American Legion is a patriotic society formed of veterans dedicated to preserving the rights of those who have served in the military and volunteering time and raising money for charities. (T. Three people pose with a lion, "Simba", in a publicity shot for the National Infantile Paralysis. The Lions Club planned a benefit show, "Thanks a Million", which would be presented at the Temple Theater. Simba, the lion, was to be one of the star performers in the show, which had a circus theme. The Elks Club staff Christmas party was held on Christmas Eve in 1951. The women wore gardenia corsages and many of the people held presents. A tiny Christmas tree has been decorated and placed on the carpet before the group.

The Ellen Satterlee Orthopedic Guild sold large styled 1952 appointment calendars to benefit the soon-to-be constructed Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The Guild, part of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association, would be staffing booths at Fisher's and Rhodes' department stores in November, 1951. Pausing in front of the Titus Motor Co., 618-24 Broadway on July 12, 1939, was a Cooney Transfer & Storage Co. flatbed truck with a bevy of young women aboard. They were taking part in the Rainbow Girls Parade and represented Yakima Assembly. The truck carried a basin labeled "Fountain of Youth" that was carefully tendered by the girls.

Pioneer Association meeting at Steilacoom Town Hall; Federal Revival style building by Emanuel J. Bresemann, Architect, built in 1930. On October 11, 1939, the Pierce County Pioneer and Historical Society held their fall meeting in Steilacoom at the Town Hall. The members dressed in their ancestor's period clothing for the event. Between 1850-1858, Steilacoom was home to the first territorial court and the first Protestant Church north of the Columbia river. In May of 1940, Ruth Babbit was photographed swinging into the spring golfing season at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Every Tuesday was Ladies' Day at the Club, and over 50 female members took the opportunity to practice their follow through on the links. Ruth Kennedy Babbit was the wife of Alexander Babbit, then assistant manager of the Bank of California National Association. Mrs. Babbit also excelled in figure skating, later becoming an international skating judge, and was a well known water color artist. She passed away on August 31, 1992, at the age of 89. (T. Tacoma Elks handball team. Most men are wearing white Tshirts with the Elk logo and the Lodge number, 174 along with shorts, court shoes and special gloves in this January 5, 1940 photograph. There were apparently more than one handball team among the Elks members. In June of 1940, the News Tribune in a special Elks insert, paid tribute to a Tacoma Elks handball team who had gone undefeated in Class B Puget Sound league that season. Nearly 1,200 representatives of the Rainbow Girls from around the state met in Tacoma from July 12 through July 15, 1939 for their 13th annual Grand Assembly. On Wednesday the 13th, members met at the Masonic Temple at 47 St. Helens Ave. and march down St. Helens and Broadway. The convention ended on Saturday with a picnic at Pt. Defiance Park. The building in the center of this photograph is the Bostwick Building, 755-71 St. Helens Ave., home, at that time, to the Kress Malted Milk Shop. (T.Times 7/13/1939 p.13)

Part of the membership of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers poses on the College of Puget Sound campus. Their photograph will be exhibited in the planetarium at the New York World's Fair. The group organized in 1931and has built 30 telescopes of varying size and power. The membership has spread and now boasts members as far away as Yakima, Seattle, LaGrande and Wollochet Bay. Posing with their bicycles outside the Lakewood Community Center in September of 1940 were seven Lakewood-area music lovers: (in no particular order) Mrs. R.W. McMahon, Mrs. Bert Sweeting, Mrs. William Panman, Mrs. George Hellyer, Mrs. Brian Shera, Mrs. W.W. Williver and (believed to be) Anne Baker. These ladies were part of a volunteer committee involved in the Tacoma Philharmonic Association membership drive. The room is swaying to the swinging sounds of Stan Miskoski and his orchestra at the University Union Club's Sadie Hawkins dance on March 15, 1941. The orchestra is attired in keeping with the Dogpatch theme of the Club's first costume ball in two years. Sadie Hawkins Day was an American Folk event started by Al Capp in his Li'l Abner comic strip. Decades before women's liberation, it was the day when emboldened females could ask out the man of their choice.
