The color guard of the 4th Infantry Regimental Combat Team led one of the five battalions of soldiers who marched down Tacoma's streets on February 22,1949. The hour-and-a-half Washington's Birthday parade, which is passing the 900 block of Pacific Avenue, was staged in observance of National Security Week under sponsorship of the Reserve Officers Association. The 16th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival began with the coronation of the 1949 Daffodil Queen, and included activities such as flower shows, parades, yacht racing and ski races. Spectators are several feet deep while viewing the Young Men Business Club daffodil float which advertised the club's 25th anniversary. This float received 3rd prize in the service clubs float category (T.N.T., 4/10/49, p. 1, 12 & B-6).

The "Mary E. Petrich" would be capable of fishing for tuna in Australian waters, these waters have never been fished by American coast-based vessels. More than 10,000 people joined together for prayer and songs at the 1949 Easter sunrise service at Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood. It was estimated to be the largest group to ever participate in local Easter worship services. A portion of the large crowd was captured through a doorway as they attended the annual sunrise service. Trumpets proclaimed dawn, and the service began shortly thereafter. (T.N.T., 4/18/49, p. 1).

Elks Christmas Dance Committee was making arrangements for their annual dance. The committee's Chairman was Lowell and Evelyn Wasser, they were in charge of the event. The Elks would be collecting Christmas gifts for needy children between the ages of one and 14 years. The Elks were planning to distribute 600 gifts to children during the holiday season. Dance committee members are wrapping gifts and deciding on the dance decorations (T. Times, 12/5/47, p. 15).

Renamed Veterans Day in 1953, November 11 was first proclaimed as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. That year, on November 13, John Philip Sousa's band played in the Washington National Guard Armory in Tacoma and President Woodrow Wilson spoke there two months earlier. In 1947, a Military Ball was held on Armistice Day at the Armory, where more than 1,500 people were expected to attend. The presentation of colors to the local reserve units of the Army and Army Air Corps highlighted the evening. Army and Navy dignitaries and prominent civilian guests attended the event. Lincoln High School's Junior-Senior prom was held in the school's gymnasium on January 21, 1949 with Keith Rader and John Hreha as the event's chairmen. The theme for the evening was "Top Hat Twirl" and the gym was decorated with a top hat, cane, white gloves and a New York City skyline. A local orchestra played for the students. Minchau-Skupen wedding. Erna Minchau and John B. Skupen were married July 4, 1949, at Allen Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Skupen stand happily together outside the church. Mrs. Skupen has worn a dress with a ruffle at the hem that gathers in the back into a flowing drape of fabric. She is wearing a fur stole and a hat that matches her dress.
