Paul (Sonny) Sceva, Jr., of Tacoma, is pictured skiing down a slope on Mount Rainier on January 18, 1939. He was a member of the Pacific Coast Conference champion ski team, the Washington Huskies. At that time, he was one of the top skiers in the Pacific Northwest. He had been a reserve member on the U.S. Olympic ski team in Europe in 1937 and had spent most of the 1937 winter in the Alps, competing in many races and placing high. Mr. Sceva would go on to graduate from the University of Washington in 1941. Sonny's father, Paul Sceva, Sr., was the manager of the Rainier National Park Company which operated the various concessions on the mountain including Longmire. An unidentified waitress served ten customers from behind the lunch counter in the Allenmore Golf Course Club House on July 12, 1939. The club house, designed by Nelson and Round, architects, was one of the most elaborate buildings of its kind in the Northwest when it was built in 1931. It had both men's and women's locker rooms and showers in the basement, and a club room, kitchen and lunch room on the first floor. On the second floor there were two bedrooms and a small apartment. The walls of the lunch room and club room were paneled with knotty West Coast Hemlock. (TDL 9/13/1931)

Sam Jackson, wearing a straw hat with a "Golden Jubilee" hat band, helped make July 23, 1939 special for two unidentified polio victims by taking them to a double header at Athletic Park, near So. 15th and Sprague. Three Tigers players sat behind the young patients, who were separated by two women (their mothers?), to have the day captured on film. Samuel Jackson was president of the Tacoma General Hospital and chairman of the board of the National Bank of Washington. The Tigers lost the first game of the day to Vancouver 6 to 5, but won the second 2 runs to 1, the Tigers' pitcher, Carl Brady, having given up only 3 hits. The "Golden Jubilee" was the Tacoma celebration of Washington's 50th anniversary of statehood.

Sixty competitors vied for the Northwest title, with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Chambers of Portland taking home most of the men's and women's trophies. No, it's not the Rockettes, it's Coach John Heinrick and his 1939 Stadium High School football team during a practice session. Coach Heinrick, in his fourth year of coaching, was riding the crest of two undefeated seasons with the Tigers. 1939 was not a record year however, as the Blue and Gold suffered its first defeat in 23 games. Having put the pressure of continuing the undefeated tradition behind them, they fought back to win the city crown for the 6th consecutive year. The Tacoma Times lauded their courage and stamina in the face of defeat and voted the entire team onto their high school football honor roll. Wes Hudson, co-captain of the 1939 Stadium High School varsity football team, in action. Wes was beginning his third year as a regular on the Tiger team at the time of this September, 1939, photograph. He played quarterback and handled the punting. According to the Tacoma Times, prior to the start of his senior year, he had never played on a losing team and he had never carried the ball. He was strictly a blocker, clearing the way for the other back field men, and highly regarded as such by coach John Heinrick. His undefeated record would change in the 1939 season as the team lost the Cross-State League trophy to Everett, coached by former College of Puget Sound coach Roy Sandberg, but defended their city crown for the sixth consecutive year. He also carried the ball successfully in the latter part of the season. Wes Hudson was also a standout in varsity basketball and track.
