Panhellenic Tea at Great Hall, Annie Wright, News Tribune, Mrs. Hosmer. The Tacoma Panhellenic honored graduating senior high school girls and their mothers at their annual tea on April 24, 1948, at the Great Hall at Annie Wright. The program consisted of talks by Miss Maxine Blake and Miss Jacquine Norback about college life from the student's view point. Lona Huseby played Chopin and Debussy on the piano. Manitou School group. A group portrait of one of the school classes at Manitou School. There are thirteen girls and sixteen boys.The School Board was faced with tough questions in 1911. How to provide for a school population that was increasing at the rate of nearly 1,000 new students per year? Voters approved a special levy on May 6, 1911, for several new elementary schools and a new high school. A portable was secured for the Manitou neighborhood and in September, Sara Cochrane began teaching the first three grades in the one-room building. Mr. Lennard Anderson, director of music at Central School, was photographed reviewing some of the arrangements to be performed for students at the February 18, 1948 concert by the Pacific Northwest Symphony Orchestra. He was playing with his right hand and pointing at the music with his left hand for a group of fifth grade students at the school. The students were, L-R, Jean Needham, Francis Moore, Ryo Inouye, Darrell Strain, Jeanine Miller and Marlys Bod. The February concert would be the last of a series of concerts performed specifically for children, presented by the Tacoma Philharmonic Association and underwritten by Medosweet Dairies. Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. Children's program at Temple Theater, Tacoma Philharmonic Association, Mrs. Ross Wright. Children are coming off special runs of the Tacoma Transit Company buses to attend the Tacoma Philharmonic presentation of the Pacific Northwest Symphony at Temple Theater. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. The Marchetta Ki girls marching unit at Lincoln High School was scheduled to perform at two football games during the first weekend of November in 1948. On Friday evening, November 5 they appeared at the Bellingham - Lincoln H. S. game in the Lincoln Bowl. The next day they were part of the halftime show at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S) Homecoming game against Central Washington. Tacoma Public Schools served Thanksgiving meals to about 12,000 students with children receiving turkey, dressing and all the holiday fixings. The school cooks and their assistants were busy preparing the special meal all day. In January 1949 Annie Wright Seminary students would be traveling to Olympia where they would visit the Governor and the State government buildings. The above photograph of students enrolled in Annie Wright Seminary's lower school appeared in the 1949 Annie Wright Seminary's yearbook, the Shield. All the girls are wearing their uniforms. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. Tacoma Vocational-Technical School offered training for all types of trades. In 1949 there were 500 students in attendance with 1,400 more as apprentices. Here six men are learning to install and repair utility lines in the electrical lineman trade, one of 50 trades offered. The three students at left are identified as (in no particular order) Ed Sorger, Jr., George Blanc and Tom Padden. Strapped securely by lineman's belts, some are working on transformers on genuine, although shortened, poles. The Tacoma Vocational-Technical School was operated by the Tacoma public school system in compliance with the state plan for vocational education. The buildings were designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. The Tudor Gothic brick buildings are covered by ivy. The roofs are studded by dormers. Expansive grounds surround the buildings.
