This is 11th & Broadway looking south in early 1926. Cars are parked on both sides of the street while streetcars and a small 6th Ave. bus share the road. On the left side of the street is one of the McMillan Bros. drugstores. Besides being a pharmacy, the McMillan Bros. also sold Brunswick and Victor phonographs and Wurlitzer pianos. Among the establishments on the right side of the photograph is the Feist & Bachrach department store (1114-20 Broadway); the site would later become the J.C. Penney Co. department store. This was busy, bustling Pacific Avenue near South 9th St. in January of 1926. Although there were stately office buildings on Pacific such as the 17-story newly completed Washington Building (center at 1019) and Puget Sound National Bank (1117-19), there were also many smaller establishments packed in as well. The Carlyle Cafeteria (ground floor of the Provident Building), the Thomas Billiard Parlor, Tabell's featuring chili and tamales, the Argonaut Hotel and Western Union were on the left side of Pacific with Dundee Woolen Mills Tailors, Bennett Typewriter Co., Samuelson & Berg's and Washington Hardware among others on the right. It was possible then to book a room, play pool, dine at a variety of restaurants, get a suit tailored, complete banking transactions, pickup tools for the home, and buy a pair of shoes all within a block or two. Streetcars were available for easy transport as an alternative to driving. G61.1-040

This view is of part of the growing 6th Avenue business district at the intersection of Oakes looking east in January of 1926. Streetcar tracks run down the middle of 6th and the 6th Avenue car is in sight. Businesses on the left include the 6th Ave. Furniture Co. in the Masonic Lodge (2609) and the Pollyanna Cafe. A two-story house with a full basement has been built on a hillside with access to the one-car garage in the basement from the lower side. The address for the house is 3116 No. Alder (now renumbered to 3114) and Richards notes list "Lockwood" as the contractor. (WSHS)

The intersection of North Prospect at North 15th, looking east, was photographed for court evidence on February 8, 1926. The streets were paved and homes on both sides appear large and well maintained. House on the right corner is 1501 North Prospect; house on the left corner is 1502 North Prospect. Sidewalks and curbs were installed which was not a feature in all neighborhoods. Ornamental street lamps were spaced evenly along both sides of the street. The "90 ft" noted in the photograph's lower left corner is believed to be the distance to the intersection from the camera's viewpoint. G58.1-061 (photograph has been damaged)

Boland Studios were requested to photograph the North 15th and Prospect Streets for court evidence. This February 8, 1926, view of North Prospect at 15th, looking west, shows neatly trimmed yards and parking strips. The large home on the left is 1429 North Prospect, across the street is 1430 North Prospect. This part of town had sidewalks and curbs, amenities not enjoyed by all. The streets are nearly empty of traffic with only three parked cars visible. The "120 ft" noted in the lower left corner of the photograph may have been the distance to the intersection from the photographer's viewpoint. G58.1-062

The street at center is North 15th St., looking north from Prospect, on February 8, 1926. This street had ornamental street lamps, neatly trimmed parking strips and yards, curbs and sidewalks. Utility poles were placed so that wires would not impact view of the street. At center right is 1429 North Fife. The other home in the immediate background is 1430 North Prospect. One of downtown Tacoma's prime commercial streets was Broadway. This is Broadway looking north from 11th St. in March of 1926. On the right is the 12-story brick Fidelity Building (949-55 Broadway) with the Bank of California as one of the tenants. The Bank of California would build its own Italian Renaissance building of Wilkeson sandstone and granite at 1011-13 Pacific Avenue in 1928. On the photograph's left is a portion of the Fisher Co. department store (1104 Broadway) and the Rhodes Brothers Department Store at 950 Broadway. G59.1-021

This is how Broadway looking south from 11th St. appeared in March of 1926. The large building on the right at 1104 Broadway is the Fisher Co. (formerly known as Stone-Fisher until October of 1925), Tacoma's oldest department store. It had been at that location since 1906 although the store had begun operations as Sanford & Stone on Tacoma Avenue in 1889. On the left were the E.R. Parker System (painless dentists) at 1103 1/2 Broadway and the French Drug Co. (1101-03) both in the Warburton Building with the relocated Blue Bird Electrical Shop (1105-07) next door. The main business districts were then still in the downtown Tacoma area where a variety of stores, restaurants and recreation outlets were available to the consumer. City buses had yet to supplant streetcars as a means of mass transit although automobiles were becoming more prevalent. G59.1-032 (Tacoma Sunday Ledger, 10-11-25, 12-A-article on the Fisher Co.)

Evelyn Apartments, 16th and I Streets. The Evelyn, 821 So. 16th St., was constructed in 1925. F.H. Madsen was the builder. The apartment building was designed by C. Fred W. Lundberg, of the architectural firm of Lundberg & Ekvall. An advertisement in the April 5, 1926 News Tribune stated that the building offered the "conveniences of a refined apartment" with the "comforts of home." The apartments had hardwood floors, Universal beds, built-in dressers, dressing rooms, spacious porches, their own individual laundry equipment, storeroom, garage and gas range. Bustling 11th Street street scene. This is a view from the Perkins Building (1101 A Street) on May 29, 1926. Buildings on the left (front to rear) are: the Federal Building (1102 A Street) and the Peoples department store (1101-07 Pacific Ave.) The 17-story, two-winged skyscraper on the right is the Washington Building (1019 Pacific). Looking uphill from the Washington Building are the Rust Building (950 Pacific) and the Fidelity Building (949-55 Broadway). On its right at the corner is the National Bank of Tacoma. Looking northbound, buildings right to left are: the barely visible one-story structure at 1115 Pacific Avenue which had been built as an annex/addition to the National Realty Bldg., then the Bankers Trust building at 1109-13 Pacific, Peoples department store (1101-07 Pacific) with the 17-story Washington Building skyscraper at the far left (1019 Pacific). In July of 1926, this three year old bungalow at 1607 No. Alder was on the market. It is pictured with the "For Sale" sign at the front of the house. Photograph ordered by the Melendy Company, real estate. The house had been built for the current owner, Anton C. Schwarz, and was located near the entrance of the College of Puget Sound campus. The listing in the Tacoma Daily Ledger described the 14x20 living room with fireplace, music room or den separated from living room by french doors, 14 x 14 dining room, kitchen, breakfast room and two downstairs bedrooms and a bath. The basement was 28 x 35 and contained the laundry. The second floor had one bedroom and an attic for storage. Floors were of triple construction, 2 of fir with an oak overlay. The garage was detached from the home. The asking price in 1926 was $6,850. (filed with Argentum) (TDL 7/11/1926, pg. E-5)

Exterior view of Puget Sound National Bank Building in July of 1926. This block of Pacific Avenue was home to many prominent businesses including (L-R) the Washington Building, Peoples department store, the Bankers Trust Building, building at 1115 Pacific Ave. built as annex/addition to the National Realty Bldg., Puget Sound National Bank Building and the National Bank of Tacoma. When completed in 1910, the 16-story Puget Sound National Bank Building (then called the National Realty Building) was the tallest on the West Coast and the first built on the West Coast to withstand earthquakes. It was also the first in Tacoma to use cantilevered beam construction. Puget Sound Bank purchased the building in 1920. Some 80+ years later, Heritage Bank now occupies the structure. G61.1-041

At 18 feet wide and 20 feet long, the cottage owned by architect Silas E. Nelsen and his wife, Gerda, located at 407 South Sheridan Avenue, was the "smallest complete home in the city" when it was built in 1926. Although the foundation was intended to be used for a two car garage on one of Mr. Nelsen's two vacant lots, he finished it as a home and his family of three lived there for a few years while they planned and built their larger home. The contractor for both homes was Henry "Chips" Querette. Both men and the home were featured in an article in the August 1928 Better Homes & Gardens magazine, "My home is My Fo'castle." The two story English style cottage, which was called the "Fo'castle," had four rooms and all the features of a larger home including a bath, kitchen and tiny breakfast nook. Living room of Silas E. and Gerda M. Nelsen home, the "Fo'castle," located at 407 So. Sheridan Ave. The English cottage, at 18 feet wide and 20 feet long, was the "smallest complete home in the city." The home was built in 1926 by contractor Henry "Chips" Querette from Nelsen's design. It was home to the Nelsens and their daughter for several years as the family designed and built a larger adjacent home.. The living room measured out at 17 feet long and 9 1/2 feet wide, with a large fireplace gracing one wall. The cottage had two rooms downstairs and two bedrooms, complete with closets, upstairs. Interior view of S.A. Andrews' residence. This may have been the sitting or living room filled with delicate and ornate furniture. Samuel and Valerie Andrews resided at 1008 North "I" St. in 1926. He owned a women's apparel firm at 9th & Broadway called the S.A. Andrews Co. The Andrews would move later to a two-story brick home on Lake Steilacoom that was designed by architect Silas E. Nelsen.

This is a view of the Tahoma Apartments as pictured in September of 1926. The Tahoma Apartments were built in 1925 by F.F. Travis and A.I. Maltby, with Travis serving as architect and contractor. The eight story building, located at 117 Tacoma Avenue North, was built for approximately $250,000. Its tenants included the Radford School of Drama. In 1940, its name was changed to the Town House Apartments. It was taken over by the College of Puget Sound in 1956, which sold the building in 1970.

Residence of A.B. Gehri at Lake Steilacoom, Silas E. Nelsen, Architect, 1926. Large two-story brick and wood home with brick patio on right. Lake visible behind patio. The English cottage style home contained a 16x 26 foot living room with a huge fireplace. Also on the first floor were a dining alcove, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs were two bedrooms, one of which was 16 x 20 and had two large closets and a fireplace, and a sleeping porch. All floors were hardwood. The large brick terrace faced off the living room. ca. 1927. This English cottage style home was built in 1922 for George C. Barlow who named it "Prospect Hill." In 1926, Mr. Barlow was the manager of C.S. Barlow & Sons Inc. The home was designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and the Ketner Bros. Co. was the general contractor. (WSHS)

The Biltmore apartments were located at 801-07 No. "I" St. Although built in 1889 by George Sumner, they were not named "Biltmore" until 1926. The building was designed by F.A. Sexton.
