Group of approximately 30, White Clover Chapter, Eastern Star, Mrs. H.J. O'Connor. The White Clover chapter of O.E.S. was honored by the official visit of Mrs. Clinton R. Kerr at their November 1949 meeting. Mrs. Kerr was the current grand worthy matron of the grand chapter of the state of Washington and she was visiting all the local chapters of O.E.S. this week.Mrs. H.J. Four students are reading in the living room at the Sigma Chi fraternity house. The home has dark woodwork and exposed ceiling beams. The walls are painted a dark color. The outreach activity program sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles for persons over 60 years of age met at the Eagles Lodge. The center opened once a week around 11 a.m. for informal games such as cards and chess. Coffee or tea was served at noon, participants could bring their own sandwiches. In the afternoon, there was community singing, a business meeting, educational classes, hobby classes, dancing or more cards. The programs were designed around the interests of the persons attending, with the Eagle lodge providing all neccessary equipment. The only charge was a nominal one for refreshments.

Formal photograph of Normanna Male Chorus at Normanna Hall. The Hall was the home of the Norway Club. The Chorus's costume carries out a nautical theme with blazers and Captain's hats. The Chorus, organized in 1888, was the oldest Norwegian singing organization in the west. The Chorus held its first sangerfest in Tacoma in 1906. The first director was Professor Carlo Sperati. George S. Johnson served as director for 30 years. The current conductor is Gunnar J. Malmin, center of the front row in the tuxedo, composer and director of PLC Choir of the West. The interior of Normanna Hall was decorated as an outdoor setting for the Camp Fire Girls' General Council Meeting and Grand Council Fire. The ceremonies included a Fire Lighting dance by the Tacoho girls in Indian costume. The awarding of ranks and honors was given by Janice Stenson, executive director. The Blue Birds, junior organization of the Camp Fire Girls, "Flew-up" into Camp Fire with the Camp Fire Girls removing the blue ties and replacing them with Camp Fire ties. (TNT, 5/24/1950, p.19)

ca. 1950. Interior photograph of club. It is five minutes to one and the dance floor is empty. The piano, drums and jukebox are silent at the Tacoma Aerie No. 3 chapter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The grand opening of new club rooms at 13th and Fawcett Avenue was on October 4, 1940. Barely a year later, the Eagles celebrated the opening of the club's completely remodeled lounge and basement quarters. It was necessary to have additional space due to the large increase of members who would be able to enjoy the new furnishings and modernistic furniture. A large contingent of Royal Arch Masons gathered at the sandstone quarry in Tenino for Masonic ceremonies on August 5, 1950. The men are posed in front of the massive quarry walls. Masonic chapters from Washington and Oregon attended the members-only event which was sponsored by the Centralia Chapter #44. A block of Tenino stone can be found in the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. (TNT 8-1-50, p. 26)

115 Boy Scout executives met at the College of Puget Sound in September, 1950, for a week long training session on administration and finance. Although the Boy Scout leaders meet annually, this was the first time they had ever met in Tacoma. Seven national leaders and Governor Arthur B. Langlie were also in attendance. (TNT 9-3-50, p. The two-story doll house has been finished with floral wallpapers, wooden and upholstered furniture in the living room, dining room, master bedroom, and the nursery, and the kitchen includes a washer and ironing machine along with a table and chairs - a girl's dream house. Group of approximately 50 people for Zora Temple #5, Daughters of the Nile. Queens and officers of neighboring temples attended a ceremonial on March 1, 1951 at which Mrs. Merle Heitzman, of Salt Lake City, Supreme Queen of the Daughters of the Nile, made an official visit to Zora Temple #5. At the Masonic Temple, amid a setting of oriental rugs and palms, Mrs. Heitzman regaled the group with her adventures visiting the 100 Nile temples in the U.S., Canada and Hawaii. Entertainment was provided: an exhibition drill by the Egyptian Patrols, special music by the Egyptian chorus and a performance by the temple dancers. (TNT 2/25/1951, pg. D-9)

Bakers Union Banquet at the New Yorker. The banquet on March 31, 1951 celebrated the Golden Anniversary, 50 years from 1901-1951, of the BCWIU of America, Local 126 Tacoma. The evening began with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner, a program and dancing. Several members with over 30 years of union membership were recognized, including the oldest living member John Moeller, who joined in 1902. (TNT 3/30/1951, pg. 16)

Scottish Rite group in the Corinthian room of the Masonic Temple. A branch of the Freemasons, this group has its roots not in Scotland, but in France. Its title is in honor of Scottish Masons who fled to France after the Jacobite Rebellion failed in 1715. The group was organized in the U.S. in 1801 and membership is available to those obtaining the rank of Master Mason. The rite consists on 32 degrees plus an honorary 33rd degree & each degree costs about $150 (in 1978.) The Scottish Rite is one of the paths to becoming a Shriner. The bathroom in "The Northwesterner" makes use of space economically. A tub with shower is fitted in on the left next to the toilet. A sink with a small counter also provides storage space below and a drawer on the right. A goose-neck lamp provides lighting over the sink as well as a window covered with patterned glass for privacy. Tile has been used on the floor and the walls. TPL-7643

A conversation area has been created off the main part of the living room in "The Northwesterner". Two side chairs and a sofa have been arranged around a coffee table. A china cabinet has been added to provide storage in this area. Two torcheres provide upward lighting at either end of the sofa. Doors can be seen on the right. TPL-7644

Another view of the kitchen in "The Northwesterner". The linear lines of the open beams are emphasized by the cupboards and appliances lining both long walls of the kitchen. The wooden door at the far end of the kitchen mimics the lines of the room. The diagonal pattern of the floor covering provides a break in the repetition of the linear pattern. TPL-7638

A small bedroom in "The Northwesterner" provides a wall of storage with closets, drawers and covered cubby holes above. The exterior and interior of the closets and cabinets are painted a light color and the two adjacent walls are painted a dark color. A single bed is set against the wall with windows covered with short, boldly patterned drapes. An easy chair sits against the near wall. TPL-7639

A multi-purpose room has been provided in "The Northwesterner" by using a day bed against an outer wall. The opposite wall provided built-in closets and cabinets. A patterned rug has been placed on the hardwood floors. An easy chair stands across the room under another window. This room can be closed from the rest of the house with a folding door seen on the left. TPL-7640

The living room in "The Northwesterner" shows the use of an open floor plan. The kitchen can be seen through the opening on the left. The open beam ceiling and far wall have been painted a light color and the interior walls around the kitchen are painted much darker. Modern styling can be seen in the light fixtures, the dining furniture against the wall below a mirror with no molding. A large television is angled across the far corner. A patterned rug has been placed on the hardwood floors. TPL-7641
