The 7th annual Daffodil Parade coursed through Tacoma on March 30, 1940. On the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce float, Charlene Anderson and Wyona Diemer ride in a covered wagon pulled by two floral oxen. Between 60,000-75,000 spectators turned out to view the parade.(T. Times 3/30/1940, pg. 1)

1940 Daffodil Parade, Brown & Haley Almond Roca float. Man and woman with three women dressed in costumes standing beside float. The float features the vacuum sealed tin of Almond Roca candy. This packaging innovation made it possible for the candy to go "to the four corners of the world." The Brown & Haley float won first place in the commercial division. (T. Times 3/30/1940, pg.1)

Narrows Bridge - McChord Field Parade. The Tacoma Wholesalers float was one of several commercial floats in the July 1, 1940, parade. It featured an attractive brunet seated in front of a cornucopia. A model of the Narrows Bridge appears on the side. The parade through downtown Tacoma streets dually celebrated the openings of the (first) Narrows Bridge and the newest national airbase. (T. Narrows Bridge - McChord Field Parade. Commercial floats like this one from the Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau were crowd favorites during the 1 1/2 hour parade through downtown Tacoma on July 1, 1940. Three women on the float peek out from decorated large hats. Tacomans probably saved their goofy and stylish hats from the Golden Jubilee celebration the previous year to wear them once again during the weeklong festivities. (T. Times, 7-2-40, p. 1)

Narrows Bridge - McChord Field Parade. A shiny delivery van pulls the Brown's floral company float with its "Say It With Flowers" sign during the massive July 1, 1940, parade honoring the opening of the (first) Tacoma Narrows Bridge and McChord Field. A young florist delivery boy sits on the automobile hood with a man, possibly the owner of the company, standing next to the van. Four women are seated on the float decorated with floral sprays. (T. The destroyer USS Wilson (#408) was launched April 12,1939 at the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton. On hand for the launching were, left to right, Rear Admiral E. B. Fenner, Mrs. Fenner (sponsor), Governor Clarence Martin, Mrs. Arthur B. Langlie, Major General Walter C. Sweeney. Mrs. Sweeney, and Seattle Mayor Arthur Langlie. The vessel was named after Seaman Charles Wilson, who was recognized for distinguished service in the Navy during the Civil War. (T.Times 4/13/1939, pg. 20)

On April 16, 1937, St. Paul Methodist Church held a double "Tom Thumb" wedding to raise funds for their missionary society. "Tom Thumb" weddings were held in the early 1900's as a social event; they were recreations of the 1863 wedding of P.T. Barnum's most famous attraction, the midget Charles Stratton (exhibited as Gen. Tom Thumb) and the equally tiny Lavinia Warren. Children doubled in the Tom Thumb pageants as the tiny couple. The St. Paul event starred, left to right, Eddie Goodenough as the minister, Curtis Killian as Tom Thumb, Shirley Clark as the bride Jennie June, Billy Goettling as the second groom Fred Finger and Barbara Ann Bowen as the other bride, Nellie May. The couples were four years old. All together, over 100 children, ranging in age from 4-11, took part in the event, impersonating the wedding party and its famous guests. (T. Times 4/16/1937, pg. 8)

Judge J. H. Nichols with the bird he selected as the Grand Champion, a Rhode Island Red rooster. The cock is the overall winner at the 44th Annual All-Northwest Winter Poultry Show. He is owned by George Cvetcovich of Seattle. The poultry show took place mid December 1938 at the Henry Mohr Hardware Building, 1141-43 Broadway. (T. Times, 12/15/1938, p. 13)
