1938 Daffodil Parade. The Rotary Club, Tacoma #8, float took fourth place in the Civic Club Division. It was one of 23 floats entered in the 5th annual daffodil parade. Adams Brake Service building in background. The morning of the parade dawned clear and cloudless, and blessed with the appearance of that rarest of Northwest spring visitors, the sun. The second annual Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta. Several wooden power motored yachts, including the "Blanche D," gather on Puget Sound. The day of the regatta, April 3rd 1938, proved to be an exciting one. It opened with a morning fire on one of the yachts, continued on with a collision during the power boat race and ended with a small cabin cruiser capsizing, spilling 5 people into the frigid Puget Sound. Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta race. Wooden motor boat number 30C333 pulls into the yacht harbor after the annual festival race. This boat is most probably the "Bo-Peep," owned by Bennett O. Swain, which was damaged on the bow after a collision with Norton Clapp's "Carmelita" during the race. The Second Annual Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta was held on Sunday April 3, 1938. Daffodil Queen Bliss Lundrigan, wearing a captain's hat and cape, is shown at the helm of I.J. Leonard's cruiser "Gadget" with her attendants Bernice Daniel (seated on the helm) and Agnes Kucemba. Eighteen sail boats and forty power boats took part in the procession before a day of races.

Two unidentified men observe the damage done to a power boat during the 2nd Annual Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta held on April 3, 1938. The boat is most likely the "Bo-Peep," captained by Bennett O. Swain, which was damaged in a collision during the 24 vessel race. Rain, wind and tide contributed to the accident which resulted when Capt. Norton Clapp's "Carmelita" passed the "Bo-Peep." The passing was close and the "Bo-Peep" was drawn into the "Carmelita's" wake, smacking the "Carmelita's" stern. The "Bo-Peep" was damaged on the bow above the water line, but continued on, and eventually won the race. (T. Times 4/4/1938, pg 1)

The Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance on April 24, 1938. The New Ambassador, Commodore, and Westland were among the pleasure boats, fishing craft, power and sail boats competing in the annual event. Races were held in each classification of vessel. Although the day remained cloudy, it never rained on the crowd of 25,000 spectators. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p. 1).

On April 24, 1938, the first water carnival was held as a farewell ceremony for the Tacoma built fishing vessel "Western Explorer," pictured center with flags. The event was planned by the Y.M.B.C. to promote Tacoma's shipbuilding industry, but it was so immensely popular that it became an annual event. Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance. The water is teeming with commercial tugs, row boats and yachts. Races were held for each catagory of vessel. Row boats maneuver near the Andrew Foss, Henrietta Foss, Theodora Foss, Peter Foss and Foss Tug No. 10 and 15. " Mathilda Foss" placed first in the Tugboat Annie Race, for boats 50 HP or better. (T. On Sunday April 24, 1938 a crowd estimated at 25,000 filled the deck, boat ramp and parking lot at Point Defiance to watch the Water Carnival sponsored by Tacoma's Young Men's Business Club. A handful of young spectators even climbed out onto the roof of the old Point Defiance Pavilion (far right) for a better view. The carnival which featured tug boat and row boat races and a salmon derby was held in part to celebrate the departure of the Tacoma-built "Western Explorer". It was hoped that coverage of the event by photographers, radio broadcasters, and newsreel companies would serve to publicize Tacoma. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p.1).

This was just a fraction of the crowds estimated at 25,000 that attended the Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance on April 24, 1938. A full exterior view of the Russel and Babcock-designed concrete waterfront pavilion shows it packed with crowds of people on all three levels. Spectators were treated to a colorful pageant of marine craft ranging from tugs and fishing boats to the Tacoma Yacht Club fleet. Tug and rowboat races entertained all. The 85-foot fishing vessel, the "Western Explorer" bid a fond farewell as she left Tacoma for her long voyage down the coast and on to Gloucester, Mass., via the Panama Canal. Wedding portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Vert. The former Elizabeth Claire Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Smith, was married June 3, 1938 to W. Edward Vert at the Christ Episcopal Church. The bride wore a two piece dirndle suit of brilliant neon blue, long white gloves, a wheat colored picture hat and a corsage of orchids. The afternoon wedding ceremony and reception held later at the Smith home on No. Sheridan Ave. were attended by relatives and close friends. The happy couple will make their first home in Yakima. (T. 50th Anniversary banquet of Troop B Cavalry and Washington Cavalry Association, held in Tacoma June 25th, 1938. The banquet gathered together all the cavalrymen who had ridden under the flag of Troop B, Tacoma's most famous military organization. Troop B was the oldest military group in the state and was often referred to as the "City Troop" by old timers. Its actual designation was Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard. Troop B served as the guard of honor at the inauguration of the first Governor of the state in 1889, as well as in conflicts in Mexico and Berlin. (T. Times 6/23/1938, pg. 8)
