On June 15, 1944, thousands of Tacomans lined the streets downtown to cheer on the Fifth War Loan Campaign parade. The military and industrial parade was held to boost the sale of bonds during the loan drive and in honor of "Infantry Day." The Tacoma Retail Trades Committee awarded the Mt. Rainier Ordnance Depot float pictured above the first place trophy for outstanding float. The float featured a bevy of pretty girls employed at the Depot with the accent on Miss Liberty, Katherine Hansen (left), holding aloft the torch of freedom. (T. Times, 6/16/44, p. 5).

On June 5, 1944, the War Stamp Minute Maids made an unannounced appearance at the Young Mens' Business Club luncheon to sell war bonds and stamps. They made a pleasing sight with their "V" for Victory halo hats and red, white and blue stamp boxes. The pictured men stepped forward to buy a $100 War Bond each. Pictured, left to right, purchasing their bond are George Neumeyer, Gil Gunderson, Leonard Peck, Jim Lasher and Gese Nist. Heading up the sale for the Maids are, left to right, Jean Hallen, Shirley Abel, Merrille Longstreth, Marilyn McCormack and Patty Doe. The maids were raising funds for the 5th War Loan Campaign. (T. Studio picture of soldier for Times. Private Inder Chhabra, a native of India, now serves in the U. S. Army. Pvt. Chhabra received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of CA and speaks four languages. He is stationed at Fort Lewis in the radio section of Headquarters Battery Field Artillery (T. Times, 5/5/44, p. 1).

Lieutenant George Rapin, on leave in March of 1944, crouches to kiss his daughter, Barbara. He was on his first trip home since she was born. George Rapin graduated from Bellarmine High School in 1934. He and his family moved to California shortly after WWII. TPL-1987,

This is the Grand Rapids PG-98 gunboat about a month before her launch date of April 4, 1970. She was the 11th of 12 gunboats built for the US Navy by Tacoma Boatbuilding. Susan Ford, young daughter of Rep. (later President) and Mrs. Gerald R. Ford of Michigan, was the ship's sponsor. The Grand Rapids was named after the hometown of Rep. Ford. View of the Grand Rapids' stern taken on March 3, 1970. Tacoma Boatbuilding was nearing an end to the 12-boat contract with the Navy to build aluminum gunboats for the US Navy. The Grand Rapids would be launched on April 4, 1970, with then-House Minority Leader and future President Gerald R. Ford and family in attendance. The Grand Rapids, the second ship of that name in the Navy, was named for the city in Michigan, the hometown of Gerald Ford. Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary posed at the Yacht Club on May 4, 1943. They were joining the regular US Coast Guard to direct fleet activities during the waterfront defense clean up drive. United States Coast Guard Auxiliary (Tacoma);

Members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary gathered at the Yacht Club on May 4, 1943 to pose for a publicity shot. They were gathering forces with the US Coast Guard to give instructions for cleaning the waterfront. During the May 7, 1943 fire fighting drill, they met at the Tacoma Yacht Club Harbor to remove fire hazards under the docks. They worked from their boats, armed with grappling hooks, pike poles and other gear. (T. Times 5/8/1943, pg. 3)

The Marymount military band, under the direction of John Kelly, was photographed practicing for the big pageant and military display scheduled at the Armory on May 8, 1943. The pageant, "Uncle Sam and the United Nations," was being organized by Tacoma's 2nd Battalion Washington State Militia. The cadets from Marymount military school were taking part, as well as various UN military and civilian war work groups. The event was being offered to the public free of charge. Photograph of the Coast Guard and the Tacoma Waterfront Defense Committee cleanup of the waterfront in April of 1943, to prevent fires. Abandoned shacks and houses were demolished and burned. A fireman and a Coast Guardsman are pictured bringing up the hose connection in case of emergency. The ground is strewn with building materials and debris. Junior high school students worked four hour shifts as part of World War II all-school-at-war activities to raise money to buy war bonds and stamps. Students at Jason Lee High School purchased a Jeep with funds raised. Two soldiers flank a smiling group of teenagers who have crammed together atop the Jeep with a sign noting their accomplishment, "Whoopee". (T.Times, 4/19/1943, p.14.) TPL-8328

A delegation representing the 1,080 students at Jason Lee posed perched on and around the fifth jeep the student body helped buy for the war effort. Many had paper routes, did odd jobs or held down a four hour after school job to raise the funds to buy war bonds and stamps. From the start of the school year in September to April of 1943 when this photo was taken, the Jason Lee students bought over $4,400 in war bonds. The 1,050 students at Jason Lee School in 1943 became personally involved in supporting the war effort. Many worked a 4-hour shift after school in local factories and shops to raise money for war bonds and stamps. From the start of the school year in September to April of 1943 when this photo was taken, the Jason Lee students bought over $4,400 in war bonds. In January of 1943, Capt. Bernhard Groth of the US Army's Ninth Service command came to Tacoma on an inspection tour of the Tacoma State Guard. He said that he was well pleased with the training and appearance of the Tacoma units. Groth was pictured here discussing a firearm with an enlisted man of the Regimental Service Company.
