These seven Stadium High School girls exhibit the latest fashions of the day upon their return to school in September of 1935. Long, ankle-length skirts were back in style. ca. 1935. Boy from Jason Lee Orchestra playing bassoon in front of school. The boy is probably Bruce Allen, a noted juvenile bassoonist, who would have been around 9 years old at the time of this picture. The bassoon is one of the most difficult wood instruments and is usually not attempted by such young players. By 1938, Bruce had been studying for over 2 years and played in the Tacoma Times Jr. Concert Band (formerly known as the Mickey Mouse Band.) He was placed first chair by the conductor of the Junior Orchestra at the 1938 high school music festival in St. Louis. (T. Times 1/8/1937, pg. 7; T. Times 5/20/1938)

In January of 1936, an unidentified Central School Safety Patrol guard decked out in a new, bright yellow poncho and rain hat holds back a large group of children with his stop sign pole. By 1936, the Tacoma school safety patrol had overseen the street crossings for seven straight years without a single accident. To honor the guards' vigilance, they were given new uniforms that matched their yellow stop signs. (TNT 1/31/1936, pg. 1)

No you're not seeing double; in February of 1936, Naval Avenue School in Bremerton boasted of 8 sets of twins, more twins than any other institution in the city of comparable size. Four sets of twins were enrolled in the first grade. The boys of Saint Patrick's beat Visitation, Holy Rosary, Sacred Heart, and Saint Leo's to win the Parochial Basketball League title in 1936. Only the last names of the players on St. Patrick's team were listed in the Tacoma Times when this photograph was published on March 13, 1936. March, 1936, portrait of Dr. Edward H. and Mrs. Florence Todd in their home at 1604 No. Alder. Dr. Todd served as president of the College of Puget Sound for 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. Prior to becoming associated with educational work of the Methodist Church, Dr. Todd was a minister of that denomination for 19 years. The men's dormitory at the college was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948. (T. Times 3/28/1936, pg. 7)

Dr. Edward H. Todd, College of Puget Sound president, points out a spot on the globe to his wife Florence in this March, 1936, photograph. The Todds resided near the school at 1604 No. Alder. Dr. Todd was president at C.P.S. for 29 years before being succeeded by Dr. R. Franklin Thompson. He was instrumental in raising funds for the relocation of the school to the No. 15th & Warner present address.
