Ribbon cutting. Snipping a ribbon believed to be decorated with stamps was a gentleman dressed in turn-of-the-century clothing in celebration of Tacoma's centennial week. Assisting him is a woman in that era's full length skirts, long shawl and bonnet. Tacoma hosted the state lodge and temple convention of the Knights of Pythias fraternal organization which opened on Sunday, October 5, 1969, at the Winthrop Hotel. Eight unidentified lodge members posed on October 6th on the rooftop of the Winthrop. Three of the men are wearing special ornate medallions. The Tacoma Knights of Pythias, Commencement Lodge #7, joined members of the Washington Temple and Tacoma Temple, Pythian Sisters at the convention. National Chancellor Commander Otto R. The Winthrop Hotel was the site of the October, 1969, state lodge and temple convention of the Knights of Pythias. Members of the Washington Temple and Tacoma Temple, Pythian Sisters also attended. Eleven Pythian Sisters are pictured above on October 6, 1969, in the hotel's Bayview Room. State Chief Goldie A. Boldman would preside over business sessions in the hotel. Students from Fife High School take over the dance floor of the Crystal Ballroom in the Winthrop Hotel to "Shake, rattle and roll" on April 18, 1970, for their annual Junior-Senior prom. Posed on the rooftop of the Winthrop Hotel with the towering Medical Arts Building prominently in the background are officers of the Department of Washington and Alaska, of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-65. They were holding their 57th annual convention at the Winthrop from June 7-10, 1970. Believed to be in attendance was Mrs. Fayette Bell of Los Angeles, the organization's national president. Also believed to be pictured above was Mrs. John McDougall of Seattle, department president who presided over the convention's meetings. Among activities held during the convention was a memory banquet where a scholarship would be awarded to a college student who was a descendant of a Civil War veteran. Dining at the Three Keys. A young couple enjoy the elaborate food preparation at their table while dining at the elegant Three Keys restaurant, Winthrop Hotel, on October 30, 1970. The tuxedoed head waiter carefully monitors the flaming dish. The Winthrop's main dining room had been re-named the Three Keys in 1963 to stand for the three keys to fine dining: excellent service, precisely prepared foods, and properly aged wines. ca. 1973. 1973 Richards stock footage. The former Winthrop Hotel gets a good scrubbing by Allied Mobile Powerwash in 1973 as powerful streams of water remove dirt and grime from its exterior. This view is of the Winthrop's back. A glimpse of the Pantages Theater is on the extreme left edge. The Winthrop ceased operations as a hotel in August of 1971 and was converted into senior/elderly housing in 1973.

The Winthrop, built in 1925, had closed its doors in early August of 1971. It was converted into senior/elderly apartments to be opened in August of 1973.

Bill Edwards plays the piano for Irish tenor Gabe Keith in this photograph from January 1944. Edwards and Keith were two of the performers in a series of shows put on by the employees of the Seattle-Tacoma Ship Building Corp. to support the Fourth War Loan drive. Although most of their performances were to entertain their fellow workers during lunch periods for the first and second shift, they were also invited to perform for the Young Men's Business Club at the Hotel Winthrop. 1940 Republican Presidential candidate Wendell Willkie with Mrs. Willkie in bunting-draped automobile in front of Winthrop Hotel after speaking at the Pierce County Republican Club's 1944 Lincoln Day dinner at the Masonic Temple. His speech was carried nationally by CBS. Mr. Willkie also took the time to speak informally to overflow groups in the Temple; only 1700 were able to fit in the Fellowship Hall and the rest of his supporters were dispersed elsewhere in the building. All were able to hear the main address, however, due to the public address system. (T. Times, 2-12-44, p. 1)

Kenworthy banquet for employees. Thomas W. Neilson, 35-year employee of Kenworthy Grain & Milling Co., was the honored guest at an informal banquet for company employees held in the Army-Navy Room of the Winthrop Hotel on May 23, 1936. Mr. Neilson, warehouse foreman, had plans to retire. Others in attendance included the branch managers throughout the state that represented the 43-year-old Tacoma business. On Saturday, June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners gathered in Tacoma for a Spring reunion sponsored by Tacoma's Afifi Temple. Afifi temple drum major Tom Richards, third from left, posed for a photograph in front of the Winthrop Hotel with "mascot" Marjorie Joy (also known as Marjie Joy) Miller, a Shirley Temple look-a-like, dressed in a drum majorette costume. Other band members identified, order unknown, were Guy Stone and Alex Rabstoff. Mr. Richards was a longtime drum major for the Tacoma Shrine Band and a mayor of Tenino. As an adult, Marjie moved to Hollywood and achieved fame as an actress and dancer under the name Marjie Millar. (T.Times 6/7/1937 p.16)

On June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners descended on Tacoma for a spring reunion hosted by Tacoma's Afifi Temple. One of the first things that they did was organize a parade. Seven Shriners, including four flag bearers, gather in front of the Winthrop Hotel to wait for the parade to begin. A Shriners marching band is behind them.

On June 5, 1944, the War Stamp Minute Maids made an unannounced appearance at the Young Mens' Business Club luncheon to sell war bonds and stamps. They made a pleasing sight with their "V" for Victory halo hats and red, white and blue stamp boxes. The pictured men stepped forward to buy a $100 War Bond each. Pictured, left to right, purchasing their bond are George Neumeyer, Gil Gunderson, Leonard Peck, Jim Lasher and Gese Nist. Heading up the sale for the Maids are, left to right, Jean Hallen, Shirley Abel, Merrille Longstreth, Marilyn McCormack and Patty Doe. The maids were raising funds for the 5th War Loan Campaign. (T. Camp Fire Girls bond booth for war finance. During the 5th War Loan campaign, women were very active and dedicated to promoting the sale of war bonds. The Camp Fire Girls set up a war bond booth at the Winthrop Hotel. Two unidentified Camp Fire Girls sell a war bond to an unidentified young lady (T. Times, 6/10/44, p. 3).

Boxer Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight champion of the world, blows out the candles on a cake for his 49th birthday during a visit to Tacoma in support of the 5th War Bond drive. He was surprised by the birthday cake during a dinner held in his honor at the Hotel Winthrop. Dempsey was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard at the time. He had retired from professional boxing in 1940 with a record of 64-6-9. 49 of his wins were by knockout. He would go on to become a successful restaurant owner in New York. ALBUM 9. William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey was born on June 24, 1895, and celebrated his 49th birthday while visiting Tacoma in support of the 5th War Bond drive. The guest of honor at a dinner held at the Hotel Winthrop, Jack Dempsey was surprised by the appearance of a cake since he had not mentioned it was his birthday. He blew out all 49 candles with one breath. On June 24 and 25, 1944, the former heavyweight champ made several appearances in Tacoma including a stop at the Todd Pacific Shipbuilding yard on the Tideflats and a visit to Point Defiance. He had last appeared in Tacoma about 1932 in an exhibition on behalf of the Tacoma Junior League Milk Fund. Dempsey was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard at the time of his 1944 visit. In March of 1945, Reverend George J. G. Grieve, as guest of honor at a program held at the Winthrop Hotel, spoke on the subject "The Britain of the Future". The program was sponsored by the International Services committee and the British Service Club. The entertainment for the day included a variety show presented by this enthusiastic group of young Tacomans. The third girl in from the right in the second row, with a sailors hat, is Dolores Horr. On her left (the second girl in that row) is Gale Gustafson. TPL-8572
