Pacific Coast Hockey League was holding their annual meeting in Tacoma at the Winthrop Hotel. Ice Hockey representatives from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Fresno, Oakland, California; Vancouver, British Columbia; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle and Tacoma attended the meeting. The Fresno franchise made the surprise announcement of withdrawing from the League; and the Victoria, British Columbia franchise applied to enter the League. More than 600 members of the Washington State Junior Chamber of Commerce attended the state convention held in Tacoma at the Winthrop Hotel. The Junior Chamber of Commerce would be electing new officers for this year; and they designated Spokane as next year's site for the state convention. The convention consisted of several meetings and programs and would wrap up with a Saturday night banquet at the Top of the Ocean restaurant. Tacoma's Comus Club was hosting their first dance of the year at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. The "Switzers" would wear green hats with feathers and greet their guests for the "Alpine Wonderland" dance. The ballroom and buffet table would be decorated with the Swiss Alps, skiers, a lighted medieval castle and other winter Alpine decorations. The Club of Hearts held their 16th annual Christmas dance in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel, 773 Broadway, in December of 1948. The Tacoma Orthopedic Association's Tahoma Guild was having their third consecutive annual Wishing Candle fundraiser. The money raised would go towards the building of the future children's hospital; eight candles were placed in popular Tacoma restaurants. Laura Lee and Lanna Lee, the twin daughters of Ward and Betty Allen, celebrated their second birthday on November 27, 1948. This photograph makes it look like they skipped cake and had turkey instead. Cook Ivan Talbot, head chef at the Winthrop Hotel, holds up a 25-pound Thanksgiving turkey for their inspection.
