The Tacoma Sculpturing Club celebrated their tenth anniversary in May 1949. A celebration exhibit at the Washington State Historical Society museum displayed members' works. Grace L. The Elks Band was playing and majorette Gloria Ellexson was performing while club members waited on July 7, 1949 at Union Station for the train taking them to the national convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The Tacoma Elks ritual team, which held the state championship, together with coach Russ Barlow, would also compete in Cleveland. It was reported during the convention that Gloria Ellexson, a student at the College of Puget Sound, had been named national champion drum majorette. Ordered by Harry Lynch, Elks Club. Forrest M. LaSuer, secretary of the Tacoma Moose Lodge, won a membership drive contest in June 1949. Harold Jordan, secretary of the Kelso-Longview Moose Lodge, lost the contest and was required to push LaSuer in a wheelbarrow, wearing a feed-sack dress with bonnet. LaSuer enjoyed the ride - he is wearing his own bonnet and night shirt, is holding a baby bottle and smoking a cigar. Jordan pushed the triumphant LaSuer past the Moose Lodge quarters at 737 Commerce St. (7/5/1949, p.2)

Eagles. The Eagles had an all-accordion band, the first organized since before World War II. They presented a recital May 25, 1949, at Eagles Temple. The band was part of the Eagles' youth guidance program and was under the direction of Louis Nomellini (standing center, first row). The four Tacoma chapters of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution held a tea honoring local high school girls who were contestants in the Good Citizenship Pilgrimage. These high school students were chosen by their teachers for their dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. They would compete with others over the state in an examination paper which was judged by a board appointed by the state DAR regent. On March 13, 1952, Ted Hill (far left), representing the Citizen's Armed Forces Committee, accepted an armful of magazines and paperback books from George W. Cairns, chairman of the Moose's Lodge Boy Scout Committee. The scout master for Moose troop 435 and over twenty of the troop's members, most in uniform, watched from behind the third stack of magazines donated by the troop to the U.S. forces stationed in Korea. The servicemen were short of reading material, particularly men's magazines, comic books and paperbacks. Each fire station in Tacoma was accepting donations. (TNT, 3/23/1952, p.A-4)

Mrs. Reuben Golliet of Olympia was installed as the new queen of the Daughters of the Nile at Masonic Temple in March 1952. The ceremony took place in Fellowship Hall of the Masonic Temple. A large contingent of Master Builders met at the Top of the Ocean restaurant on November 29, 1950. The group was composed of local contractors and others in the building industry who were proud of their craftsmanship. They had their association headquarters at 1103 1/2 Division Ave.

The Tacoma Master Builders combined the installation of their 1951 officers and their Christmas Party for 1950 at the New Yorker Cafe. Ten men and their wives are seated or standing behind the head table. Mel Pedersen, retiring president of the organization, is seated behind the podium. Rex N. The Ellen Satterlee Orthopedic Guild sold large styled 1952 appointment calendars to benefit the soon-to-be constructed Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The Guild, part of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association, would be staffing booths at Fisher's and Rhodes' department stores in November, 1951. Three people pose with a lion, "Simba", in a publicity shot for the National Infantile Paralysis. The Lions Club planned a benefit show, "Thanks a Million", which would be presented at the Temple Theater. Simba, the lion, was to be one of the star performers in the show, which had a circus theme. Simba would be returned to her home at the Point Defiance Zoo in the spring. (TNT, 1/16/1952, p.6)

The Elks Club staff Christmas party was held on Christmas Eve in 1951. The women wore gardenia corsages and many of the people held presents. A tiny Christmas tree has been decorated and placed on the carpet before the group.

In honor of Flag Day 1951, the Tacoma Elks held special services at their Lodge at 565 Broadway. Preparing for the rites were, L-R, Erling O. Johnson, secretary and speaker for the occasion; Harold L Duncan, exalted ruler; and Burritt B. Anderson, Loyal Knight and Flag Day chairman. The centerpiece for the ceremony was a replica based on Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II. The observance of Flag Day originated with the Elks organization in 1907. In 1949, President Woodrow Wilson, himself a member of the Elks, made June 14th a day of national observance for that symbol of our country. Photograph ordered by the Elks. A multi-purpose room has been provided in "The Northwesterner" by using a day bed against an outer wall. The opposite wall provided built-in closets and cabinets. A patterned rug has been placed on the hardwood floors. An easy chair stands across the room under another window.
