In May of 1939, the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers met on the campus of the College of Puget Sound to have their photograph taken for an exhibit at the New York Worlds Fair. In this picture, three of the club members are seen with one of the clubs larger telescopes. The young fellow looking through the telescope is Jimmy Wiborg, who was 14-years-old and the youngest member of the club. Jimmy had just recently finished building his own telescope. It had taken him two years to build, including 8 months to grind and polish the six-inch mirror. In this photograph Jimmy is flanked by (left) W.H. Crump, past-president of the club, and Fred Myers, meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Bureau. (T. Times, 5/16/1938, p. 16).

Fourteen year old Jimmy Wiborg gazes through a telescope on the campus of the College of Puget Sound in May of 1939. He is the youngest member of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers. Other members pictured are, left to right, Fred Myers (meteorologist with the US Weather Bureau) and W.H. Crump (past president of the organization.) The group was posing for a series of pictures scheduled to be exhibited at the New York World's Fair. The group had constructed over 30 telescopes of varying sizes and power. The one pictured was built by Mr. Crump. The club was currently meeting on the campus of CPS, but had purchased property at 968 McKinley Road on McKinley Hill, with the intention of building a clubhouse and observatory. (T. Dinner at Tacoma Club for 73rd birthday of Sydney Albert "Sam" Perkins, local tycoon and former newspaper editor. The dinner was attended by over 100 of Mr. Perkins's friends and business associates. During his 50 years in Tacoma, he had served as the partner of W.P. Bonney in a wholesale and retail drug business, in Washington D.C. as the secretary of Mark Hanna and as owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News.

In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. In the front row, left to right, are Eva Nomellini, Carmella Pupo, Rose Pellegrini, Mobel Monaldi, Kate Lanza and Lena Reda. 2nd row, Rose Furaco, Mary Recona, Mary Carbone, Esther Reda, Elvira Salatino, Rose Colombini and Caroline Turco. New officers of the Maccabee Lodge. Group of men wearing suits with boutonnieres and women wearing long gowns with corsages posed in front of an elaborately decorated stage on January 24, 1940. The new tent and hive officers of the Knights and Ladies of Maccabees were installed that evening in public rites. Roy Devish and Ethel Koch are the respective leaders. Y.M.B.C. Narrows Bridge Committee. Club members may have looked deep into their closets to find the variety of hats worn in this June 25, 1940, photograph. Ten-gallon, sombreros, top hats and skipper's caps are worn jauntily by the Young Men's Business Club. Each year they held a Water Carnival at Point Defiance; in 1940, the date of the carnival was set for Sunday, June 30th, the day before the grand opening of the first Narrows Bridge and several days before the opening of the nation's newest airbase, McChord Flying Field. The Y.M.B.C. was a service organization who was heavily involved in community affairs; they would also sponsor the last ferry ride on the Kalakala, July 2nd, which would carry nearly 1400 people over the two routes to be discontinued by the opening of the Narrows Bridge. Densmore are on the committee in charge of Tacoma's Temple's Golden Jubilee ceremony and ball. The 23rd Annual convention of the Northwest Loyal Order of Moose was held in Tacoma in July of 1938. Over 2500 members of 32 lodges from all parts of the Northwest, covering Alaska to the California border and east to Montana, descended on the Winthrop Hotel, convention headquarters. Over 1000 participated in the parade held on July 22nd, from its formation at 7th & Pacific to its conclusion at the Winthrop. Here women in white uniforms are pictured marching down a Tacoma street. Pictured are six of the seven Tacoma senior Girl Scouts who last year took a "gypsy trip" from Camp Wildwood in Portland, Oregon, to Camp Merriweather in Tillamook. Left to right: Mary McDonald, Marian Hartwich, Peggy Shaw, Jane Loren, Jane Lund, Julia Schwalen. Not picture is Betty Lou Card. The previous summer's trip took them from the Portland Girl Scout camp to Eugene Oregon and on to the coed Tillamook Camp, where they were the guests of the Boy Scouts. A similar trip is planned for August this year from local Camp St. Albans. The trip, as well as other St Albans innovations, will be financed by the "Cookie Crunch," Jan. 23-Feb. 6th, when the girls take advance orders for Girl Scout cookies. New to St. Albans this year will be a Pioneer Unit for senior girls, sailing trips for the Mariner division and the first time admission of Brownies to camp.
