Lumber & Sawmill Workers Local 2633 won union recognition and an increase in wages to 50 cents an hour in the Northwest lumber strike of 1935. The bitter battle in the spring and summer of 1935 led to confrontations between striking mill workers and National Guard troops in the streets of Tacoma. Union members, family and friends gathered in May 1936 to celebrate the first anniversary of the victory. Knights Templar parade. Knights Templar dressed in regalia march south from 9th Street on Pacific Avenue. They were part of a May 11, 1936 parade in downtown Tacoma marking the opening session of the 49th Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington. In June of 1936, members of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union collected food for their striking brothers in Omak, Wa. The first load of food was being loaded into a truck and shipped from the District Council's headquarters at 748 Market St. It would be followed by two more truck loads dispatched on June 27th. The local union had emerged from their own bitter and extended battle in 1935 victorious. The workers in Omak had been on strike since early May. The strike was dangerous with the plant heavily guarded and guards and strike breakers armed. The plant had the support of Omak area merchants and the strikers were suffering greatly. Over 51 fishermen took part in the Poggie Club - Junior Chamber Salmon Derby in June of 1936; 24 landed a salmon. The first place winner was Oscar F. Harting, front row 6th from the right, (between the man in sweater and tie and the man in a hat) who caught an 18 pound salmon. First prize was $150 in cash, 2nd was a boat with outboard and third prize was an outboard motor. All successful fishermen were awarded steel fishing knives. Merle Murphy and George Murphy are in the front row, 3rd and 4th from the left, respectively. Les Davis, founder of the Les Davis Fishing Tackle Co., is 2nd from right in the white shirt. Davis began manufacturing tackle in the 1920s in the garage of his home at No. 34th & Stevens. He died in 1983 at the age of 78. Oscar Harting died in Tacoma on February 7, 1992; he retired after 22 years of service with Metropolitan Parks as the Point Defiance Boathouse manager and concession operator. (T. Thousands of spectators lined the Lake Washington Ship Channel as the Afifi Temple of Tacoma float was towed by during the Shriners Marine Pageant in Seattle 7/10/1936. A huge barge carrying members of the Afifi Temple Band and a large replica of Mount Rainier is pictured just after it passes the draw of the Montlake Bridge in this night scene.The float, designed by Walt Sutter, featured thousands of gallons of water pouring down from an imitation Narada Falls. In October of 1936, members of the Scandinavian-American Democratic Club rallied for their party's candidates in the upcoming local and national elections. Portraits and signs for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Clarence Martin line the walls. Both men were seeking re-election, Roosevelt for the presidency and Martin for Washington State governor. The rally was held at Valhalla Hall on October 14, 1936, with the general public invited. Initiatives and amendments on the general election ballot were discussed. On February 20, 1937, members of the Le Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chavaux (aka 40 et 8) of Washington and Oregon gathered in Tacoma for their fifth annual "interstate wreck." The 40 et 8 was a fun recreational branch of the American Legion, whose members were selected because of their exceptional service to the Legion. They were known for their outlandish costumes and propensity to parade; preparing for just such a exhibition were, left to right, an unidentified minuteman, Arnold Leverenz (Tacoma organist) dressed as a clown, Frank Callender (former Police Chief) in a smock, an unidentified officer and an unidentified person from Port Angeles group #29 "La Belle de Armentiers." In March of 1937, Lillian Morey, left, and Laura Ellis were ably handling the publicity for the one of the most anticipated society events for the younger set in Bremerton, the Rainbow Girl-DeMolay ball held at the end of March. On February 26, 1937, nearly 300 guests crowded into the American Legion Hall, home of the West Bremerton Post No. 149, for their monthly social. The program included recognition for local teachers and junior high graduates. Selected for recognition on a basis of scholarship, honor, leadership, service and courage were four mid-year graduates from junior high. Pictured receiving their certificates of recognition are, left to right, Patricia Castle, Post Commander Pat Mulvany, Harold Worland, Joan Tatham and Wayne Kirkland. In March of 1937, three members of the Eluti Kiei Camp Fire Girls group were awarded the highest rank in Camp Fire, that of Torch Bearer, at the Grand Council Fire held in Seattle. The girls being honored were photographed in traditional native American garb. Pictured, left to right, are Margaret MacDonald, Kathryn Bates and Jo Ann Oass.
