The occupational therapist is showing him how to pound the metal into a specific shape using a wooden form. Examples of what can be made from sheet metal are shown on a shelf above the work table. One of the pieces has spelled out the name, "Cynthia". An open cupboard contains metal working tools. The young woman is using a ball peen hammer to finish a piece and the man is using a leather-faced forming mallet.

College of Puget Sound. Three male college students, members of the Intercollegiate Knight National Service Fraternity, are cleaning an attic. One of them is dismanteling what looks like a bed frame, and the other two are mopping the floor. Old furniture, roll-up blinds and other items are still piled up around them. The walls are finished in wooden planks. This group participated in the year-round activities of the college and undertook two major spring projects: remodeling the out-dated bulletin boards at Jones Hall and the procurement of a chapter room. Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

Pacific Lutheran College dedicated their new gymnasium in 1947. This gymnasium was built after their original gymnasium was destroyed in a fire. Students (all men) work in a science lab with microscopes, slides, rocks, test tubes and small bottles of different solutions. A motar and pestle sits on the table for students to use to grind materials with which they want to experiment further. Jars of labeled materials sit on shelves around the room and gas lines are also seen against the wall to provide flame for certain kinds of experiments.

In February of 1948, the alumni reunion planning committee sipped coffee as they discussed the upcoming annual Pacific Lutheran College reunion scheduled for February 7-8th at the Parkland campus. Pictured graduates were, L-R, Lorene Wilson, Marjorie Wentworth, Stella Jacobs, Alice Ford and Wilma Schmitz. Activities for the two-day get-together included a smorgasbord banquet, a basketball game between the PLC reserves and the Alumni All-Stars, and a mixer featuring home movies of the Alumni's college days. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. This aerial view of the Pacific Lutheran College campus and grounds was taken in January of 1948. Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. Pacific Lutheran College offered their students an "Education for Life" and "Build for Character". They had programs in Liberal Arts, Teacher Training, Music, Parish Work, Pre-Medical, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Theology and Pre-Law. Pacific Lutheran College had brought a lot of benefits to the Parkland community. Dr. Eastvold was PLC's President, in addition to the new gymnasium Pacific Lutheran College had also built a new $200,000 Science Hall in 1947. Pacific Lutheran College's new Memorial Gymnasium had recently been dedicated and the first basketball game had been played here. Pacific Lutheran's new gymnasium was used by the women's and men's basketball teams. The gymnasium was one of the most modern gyms of its type, and one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. Pacific Lutheran College's library was designed in 1936, building began in 1937 and the building was dedicated in 1939. This building was designed by Emanuel J. Bresemann, a local Tacoma architect. Pacific Lutheran was planning to remodel the library during 1948, view of PLC students outside of the library, possibly between their classes or on their way to study (Saga, 1948).

ca. 1947. Construction photograph of Pacific Lutheran College's Memorial Gymnasium, ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. The gymnasium was dedicated in December of 1947 and built from a design by Lea, Pearson & Richards, architects. A new gymnasium had been planned as early as 1944, and postponed by the war. A fire of unknown origin razed the old gym in 1946 and brought new urgency to the construction of the new gymnasium. The new building was a part of the move toward capital expansion, headed up by College president Dr. Seth Eastvold, president from 1943-1962.

The new Pacific Lutheran College Memorial Gymnasium was dedicated at the first basketball home game of the season. The new gym has a sound proof radio booth, electric scoreboard, portable bleachers, classrooms, laundry facilities and a trophy ornament area. The impressive new Science Hall at Pacific Lutheran College was in full operation, classes from the natural sciences department were being taught and departmental offices were relocated into the new building.
