1967 Richards stock file. The venerable Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, stands empty in 1967. The membership of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174, had moved to a brand new temple at 1965 So. Union two years before. The building's famous Spanish steps are to the right of this August 2, 1967, photograph. A large monkey puzzle tree, next to the steps, reaches toward the building's roofline.

On March 8, 1967, various athletes from local high schools were honored once again at the annual "Athletes Nite" held at the Tacoma Elks Temple, 1965 So. Union Ave. Uniformed majorettes and cheerleaders from the schools were also on hand to provide entertainment and support. Banners were hung with the names of participating schools- including Lincoln, Mount Tahoma, Stadium, Bellarmine, Lakes, Laughbon (in Dupont), Wilson, Franklin Pierce, Clover Park, Curtis and Peninsula. In September, 1967, the Tacoma Elks Club sponsored their annual Salmon Derby, inviting members to participate for a chance to win valuable prizes. Three men are pictured preparing their boat for entry into the waters of Commencement Bay. They were part of the 1820 contestants who vied for over 150 prizes. 186 fish were caught that day, most at the mouth of the Puyallup River. (TNT 9-18-67, p. 16)

Elks Club members ready their boats in preparation for the 21st annual Salmon Derby sponsored by the Tacoma Elks Lodge on Sunday, September 17, 1967. 1820 contestants would take their chances to win valuable prizes including a boat, trailer and motor. Al Marano, fishing alone at Point Defiance, would come in first with a catch weighing in at 22 lb. 4 oz. He would drive away in a 1967 Jeep Universal, the grand prize. Zora Temple No. 5 members of the Daughters of the Nile organization posed with a wigged mannequin between them on October 7, 1967. Virginia Morgan and Darlyne Mazza were publicizing an upcoming Daughters of the Nile luncheon to be held at the Top of the Ocean on October 27, 1967. The wig was one of many wig fashions to be shown at Zora Temple's annual fall orthopedic luncheon. Proceeds from the luncheon were designated for materials which Nile sewing clubs used for articles to be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was set to celebrate its Centennial on February 12-17th, 1968. The Tacoma Elks was the largest of the order and would celebrate the centennial of the national organization with a full week's programs and activities. Gathered around the table on January 16, 1968, were eleven past and present officers and trustees of Tacoma Lodge No. 174 with publicity information. Included in the photograph were Swan Johnson, Jerry Geehan, Arthur Emery, Harry Lynch, Emmett Anderson, Leonard Rowan, Clyde Alexander, Alex Wilson, Harold Sitts and Robert Holder, who was chairman of the local celebration. Posed on the rooftop of the Winthrop Hotel with the towering Medical Arts Building prominently in the background are officers of the Department of Washington and Alaska, of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-65. They were holding their 57th annual convention at the Winthrop from June 7-10, 1970. Believed to be in attendance was Mrs. Fayette Bell of Los Angeles, the organization's national president. Also believed to be pictured above was Mrs. John McDougall of Seattle, department president who presided over the convention's meetings. Among activities held during the convention was a memory banquet where a scholarship would be awarded to a college student who was a descendant of a Civil War veteran. Memorial services - Elks Temple. Memorial services to honor "absent Brothers" were held at the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174 on Wednesday evening the 2nd of December, 1970. Large arrangements of flowers and small potted trees graced the stage steps. White gates were placed before a backdrop of trees and a large white building shown in the distance. Mrs. Robert Clinton was installed as Queen of Zora Temple, Daughters of the Nile in elaborate ceremonies at the Masonic Temple, 47 Saint Helens Ave., on March 25, 1972. Mrs. Clinton, in white jeweled gown, is pictured flanked by members of her royal court. Officials of the Afifi Shrine participated in groundbreaking ceremonies for their new temple at 815 So. Vassault Street on August 9, 1973. All the men were wearing the familiar fez which included the member's rank within the Shrine. The new headquarters would be located on a 24-acre tract north of Tacoma Community College. The mosque and surrounding parking lot occupied five acres. The $200,000 project was designed by Shelton architect Harold Dalke and built by Neeley Construction of Puyallup. Eleventh Annual Conclave of the Order of DeMolay, held in Tacoma in August of 1935. Over 800 members of the organization assembled for the convention. One of the highlights was the parade held on August 31st. A group of young men wearing white uniforms was photographed parading up 13th Street in Tacoma. From the appearance of the uniforms, this appears to be the Bremerton chapter of DeMolay. The Mecca restaurant and tavern and Knapp College are in buildings on left.

Eleventh Annual Conclave of the Order of DeMolay, held in August of 1935 in Tacoma. One of the highlights was the downtown parade held on the 31st. The route was down St. Helens Ave. to Pacific, to 13th and up Broadway. A parade of young men were photographed marching along Broadway, 1100 block, toward the Elk's Temple, Tacoma. Knights Templar parade. Knights Templar dressed in regalia march south from 9th Street on Pacific Avenue. They were part of a May 11, 1936 parade in downtown Tacoma marking the opening session of the 49th Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington.
