The drive between the hedges at the Annie Wright Seminary. This road led downhill from Tacoma Ave. between the seminary grounds and the tennis court property. The seminary grounds were the location of the abduction of 9 year old George Weyerhaeuser on May 24, 1935. He was kidnapped near the tennis courts and whisked away in a waiting car. Between the time of his abduction on May 24th and his release on June 1st, he was held in two pre-dug pits prepared for his capture and in a rental house closet at 1509 W. 11th Ave. in Spokane. (T. In June of 1935, some of Annie Wright Seminary's earliest alumnae returned to the campus to help celebrate the school's 50th anniversary. The girls school opened in September of 1884 at 611 Division Ave. and these ladies were some of the first students. As a part of the anniversary celebration, they took part in a seminary pageant, modeling outfits from that opening year. Pictured seated are, left to right, Mrs. W.H. These seven Stadium High School girls exhibit the latest fashions of the day upon their return to school in September of 1935. Long, ankle-length skirts were back in style. Safety patrol crossing guards assisted elementary school children crossing the street by holding "Stop" flags on September 9, 1935. In January of 1936, an unidentified Central School Safety Patrol guard decked out in a new, bright yellow poncho and rain hat holds back a large group of children with his stop sign pole. By 1936, the Tacoma school safety patrol had overseen the street crossings for seven straight years without a single accident. To honor the guards' vigilance, they were given new uniforms that matched their yellow stop signs. (TNT 1/31/1936, pg. 1)

No you're not seeing double; in February of 1936, Naval Avenue School in Bremerton boasted of 8 sets of twins, more twins than any other institution in the city of comparable size. Four sets of twins were enrolled in the first grade. The boys of Saint Patrick's beat Visitation, Holy Rosary, Sacred Heart, and Saint Leo's to win the Parochial Basketball League title in 1936. Only the last names of the players on St. Patrick's team were listed in the Tacoma Times when this photograph was published on March 13, 1936.
