A College of Puget Sound coed, probably Beverly Berlie, tries to sell a "pledge ticket" to a shipyard welder on the Tacoma tideflats. For two days in April of 1941, 600 students from CPS spred out through Tacoma and its neighboring cities to raise money for their new student union building. The "Bricks-krieg" was under the leadership of senior class president Phil Walesby, who was named dictator-for-a-day-or-so. Work on the student union was completed in December of 1941. The dedication was held January 16, 1942.

Delighted Pacific Lutheran College co-eds applaud the selection of freshman Nadine Bruins of Arnegard, North Dakota, as the Lucia Bride on December 12, 1958. She has her eyes closed as the traditional red sash is wound around her waist. Tammara Oman (L) and Solveig Leraas (R) were selected as her attendants. The Festival of Santa Lucia is a very old Swedish custom, generally held the 13th of December, which features the eldest daughter of each household approaching her sleeping parents dressed in a long white gown with a red sash and wearing a crown of lingonberry leaves in which are set seven lighted candles. She supposedly represents the white-clad maiden, wearing a crown of burning candles, who brought food to starving Swedish villagers. Pacific Lutheran, like many other schools with large Scandinavian populations, celebrated this festival annually with the selection of a lovely Lucia Bride. Publicity for College of Puget Sound 1941 Freshman Stunt Night. Stunt Night was scheduled for September 19, 1941 in Jones Hall. The event was an annual tradition at CPS. The celebration would be highlighted by gay spring music, colorful folk art and dancing and the coronation of the May Queen. Over 2,000 people attended the celebration. The Independents at the College of Puget Sound were getting ready for their first big social of the year, a "Sadie Hawkins Day" dance on Saturday November 8th, 1941, at the Knights of Columbus Hall on 6th and Steele. The climax would be the selection and shotgun wedding of Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae. Candidates for the groom are, left, Jim Angus and Harris Martin; the tall gentleman is Larry Henderson, master of ceremonies and candidates for the not-so-blushing bride are Ruth Sonneman and Annabel Miller. Pacific Lutheran University students pay close attention to their professor in this April, 1960, photograph. Gordon O. Gilbertson was an associate professor of music and director of the P.L.U. band. These musicians probably make up the woodwind and brass sections of the school band.

Production crew at work. In 1960 Pacific Lutheran celebrated its 70th year of existence along with a change to university status. Now known as Pacific Lutheran University, the school maintained its well-known music and theatrical departments. Students and staff are shown backstage in this April, 1960, photograph preparing for an upcoming event. Props and scenery are being put into place. This may be the Curtain Call Club which furnished the assistant directors and back-stage crews for many campus plays. Membership in the club was open to all students interested in any phase of the theater, from directing to make-up and costume design. (1961 SAGA yearbook, p. 151)

On June 6, 1942, commencement exercises were held at Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. Eighty-nine degrees were being awarded, including an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Government to Governor Arthur B. Langlie. He was pictured shaking hands at the exercises with an unidentified man. Rev. Stanley G. Logan was also awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity. (T. Times 6/6/1942, pg. 1)

At the luncheon after the June 6, 1942 Commencement exercises at the College of Puget Sound, Dr. Edward H. Todd was presented with a number of gifts thanking him for his 29 years of service as president of the college. Dr. Todd and his wife Florence are pictured holding pieces of a silver tea service, a gift from the faculty. He was also presented with the book that he is holding, a bound volume of testimonial letters from 250 associates and friends. In the background is a framed enlargement of a colored photo of Jones Hall, the center of the college and where his office was located. Strombo, at 41, was a former North Dakota University player and had coached in North Dakota and Oregon.
