  • Four men wearing suits and serious expressions pose within the hull of a ship under construction. Peter Matthews established the Matthews Shipyards in 1897 to build lumber carrying schooners. Upon his death, the company was run by his son-in-law, George Hitchings, and renamed Hitchings and Joyce. circa 1910.

  • This ship was part of a fleet called the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service, run by the Canadian Pacific Railway. From 1901-1981, these steamships provided passenger service to coastal communities, canneries, logging camps, and summer excursions to Alaska. The Princess Adelaide was built in 1910 and withdrawn from service in 1938. She was sold to Typaldos Brothers in 1949 and renamed the Anjelika. circa 1910.

  • View down Second Street of the business district of the Dalles. This city is located in Wasco County, Oregon, on the Columbia River and is historically known as the end of he Oregon Trail. The photo was possibly taken during a holiday. Some of the buildings are festively adorned with American flags. "O.-W. R. & N." refers to the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company, a railroad system that ran through Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, and was eventually absorbed into the Union Pacific Railroad Company. circa 1910.

  • When gold was discovered in eastern Oregon in 1861, a rush of incoming miners created Baker City, a town formally incorporated in 1874. Baker City is now known more for its tourist industry. The photo shows men in an open pit employing placer mining techniques which involve the use of water to mine, move, and separate minerals from deposits of sand and gravel. circa 1910.

FLEMING-039 Front

  • The First Baptist Church of Portland was completed in 1894. Architect Warren Hayes designed it in a Romanesque Revival style that contrasted with the more Gothic styles of other Portland churches of the time. It has been referred to as the White Temple because of the light colored sandstone from Washington State. Incorporating a half block at Taylor Street, the church is still very active today. circa 1910.

  • The Portland Rose Society held their first floral parade in 1904, and in 1907, these parades were incorporated into the newly created Portland Rose Festival. Additionally, night parades- or "electric parades"-were added to the festivities featuring floats illuminated by torches and electric lights. Discontinued for some time due to rowdiness, the night parades have resumed as part of the Portland Rose Festival but are now called Starlight Parades. This photograph depicts an exotic Egyptian themed float showing "Cleopatra en Voyage". Colorful roses run along the borders of the postcard. circa 1914.

  • Moclips is a small community on the Pacific Coast north of Hoquiam, Washington once known for its cedar shingle and shake industry. Although the caption reads "Granville Point", the photo was probably taken at Point Grenville, an area northwest of Moclips named in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver after British Secretary of State William Grenville. circa 1908.
