Publicity for College of Puget Sound 1941 Freshman Stunt Night. Stunt Night was scheduled for September 19, 1941 in Jones Hall. The event was an annual tradition at CPS. The Independents at the College of Puget Sound were getting ready for their first big social of the year, a "Sadie Hawkins Day" dance on Saturday November 8th, 1941, at the Knights of Columbus Hall on 6th and Steele. The climax would be the selection and shotgun wedding of Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae. Candidates for the groom are, left, Jim Angus and Harris Martin; the tall gentleman is Larry Henderson, master of ceremonies and candidates for the not-so-blushing bride are Ruth Sonneman and Annabel Miller. On June 6, 1942, commencement exercises were held at Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. Eighty-nine degrees were being awarded, including an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Government to Governor Arthur B. Langlie. He was pictured shaking hands at the exercises with an unidentified man. Rev. Stanley G. Logan was also awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity. (T. Times 6/6/1942, pg. 1)

On June 6, 1942, after the commencement exercises at the College of Puget Sound, a complimentary luncheon was held in the main dining room of the Student Union Building. Guests included the Board of Trustees, faculty, graduating class and special friends of the college. The luncheon was used to honor Dr. Edward H. At the luncheon after the June 6, 1942 Commencement exercises at the College of Puget Sound, Dr. Edward H. Todd was presented with a number of gifts thanking him for his 29 years of service as president of the college. Dr. Todd and his wife Florence are pictured holding pieces of a silver tea service, a gift from the faculty. He was also presented with the book that he is holding, a bound volume of testimonial letters from 250 associates and friends. In the background is a framed enlargement of a colored photo of Jones Hall, the center of the college and where his office was located. Pacific Lutheran College football team, players and coaches. Unidentified coach is believed to be Philip G. Strombo, who succeeded Cliff Olsen as the new director of athletics at PLC in the fall of 1942. Strombo, at 41, was a former North Dakota University player and had coached in North Dakota and Oregon.

Two co-eds in small booth with sign "Spur Stamp Sale." Six students gathered around booth. Spurs were a service-oriented campus organization composed then of sophomore women. Puget Sound's chapter was the fifth formed nationally in 1925.

C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

R. Franklin Thompson, President of College of Puget Sound, is wearing a baseball mitt and standing on the C.P.S. baseball field. Thompson had a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), he had been the President at C.P.S. for many years. President Thompson liked to get involved in many of the College activities (Tamanawas, 1947).
